Difficulty aside (I assume this game is far more forgiving), how does that comparison in terms of mechanics and input measure up?

Iiiit kind of isn't. It doesn't obfuscate basic gameplay concepts like Demon's Souls did, but the difficulty curve is PUNISHING.

After a brief introductory sequence which gives you a chance to experiment with some very basic mechanics (but doesn't explain them much) you're thrown in the world. You get some basic quests and what seems like the plot hook to progress the main story further.

So of course you start doing the side quests. That's what you do in an RPG, right? Well, then you loving DIE. HORRIBLY. OVER AND OVER! Because the quests are hard! Like really hard!

OK that didn't work, so you go exploring in the world. Kill some goblins, have a tough fight with some wolves. Then you take a wrong turn in the goblin-filled meadows and a loving griffin (or something equally big) turns up and loving MURDERS YOUR rear end. Guess you shouldn't have been where you were!

So I'd say this game really scratches the same kind of itch (at least for me) as Demon's Souls did. You get a wonderfully dark and dangerous world where you have to sink or swim, and you'll probably sink an awful lot before you learn to slowly doggy peddle around, but when you do, it's a wonderful feeling.

Last save. I really should learn to save more often so my frequent deaths don't result in a 30 minute redo.

Okay, maybe I'm just being a retard here, but how do you import characters you've made from the demo? I've made my character and pawn in the demo and saved the data, but when I start the main game I do the griffin fight with the premade character, and then it launches me right into the character creator and I can't see any options for importing from the demo. I really hate to think that I need to write everything down and remake them both from scratch. :(

For me it automatically loaded my created character and without commenting on it in any way it just automatically made it the current preset in the full game. And later when I got to make my pawn it loaded my pawn up too.

Are you sure you're using the same storage location for the demo and the full game? Both from the same region?

I've installed the 360 version and it runs fine.

If you are going to do any one escort I suggest taking the trainer from the encampment (I never remember his name) to the Shadow Fort. You get a greatsword that consistently beats out every two handed weapon I've picked up since. Slap that on a warrior and make things dead.

This is what I just did this morning. The slog to the Shadow Fort was pretty frustrating since finding the route there was guesswork, but I did gain a bunch of levels on the way over. Then on the way home instead of running back around the world I went through the quarry which was a blast.

Now I'm at level 18, vocation level at 7 or 8 and contemplating if I should swap from Strider to Ranger before going back to clean up the rest of the quarry. And the sword sold for a nice 105 000 gold, paying for a full set of upgrades for myself and my pawn (a mage).

Wow. Ogres.

I mean I kind of get how to fight them (climb the head, stab the head, jump off if he tries to pancake you) but once the fight gets into the enrage part I just don't know what the gently caress. I can't melee him and my arrows are doing gently caress all damage even if I headshot him. The last two I killed by kiting one into a pit and peppering the other with 90 poison arrows. Neither is a sustainable strategy, I think.

Help!

OK, I'll get on that.

I didn't actively seek out ogres. I ran into three on my way through the quarry and then one more under Gran Soren (spoilered in case someone hasn't gone to those locations yet) and they were kind of a rude awakening.

On that note, what's the deal with vocation skills? I mean I get that only some skills will cross over to other vocations, but I was pretty surprised when I went from strider to ranger and literally none of my bow skills worked anymore. Even though the skill lists I found seemed to list them as ranger skills as well.

Oh geeze, how the hell did I miss that? I mean I was going to use dagger skills as a specific example in my post and even swapped out my bow because my old one didn't work anymore, but for some reason just didn't make the connection.

OK so I guess before I swap vocations I'll need to grind some more points to unlock skills with so I don't have to start out from scratch (I assume the points are universal at least).

Diffrences between Dragon's Dogma and Demon's / Dark Souls

Agreed on the specifics, but I'd say the big similarity is in the design philosophy. They're both extremely spartan in modern day comforts and conveniences (which is more charming in DS, more frustrating in DD) and in the philosophy of not really telling the player anything, throwing him into the world and letting him sink or swim.

Honestly, and this is surprising me a great deal, I am having way more fun with Dragon's Dogma right now than I was with Dark Souls. Demon's Souls stands head and shoulders above both in my esteem though.

Is the single weapon vendor in Gran Soren really the only place I can get weapon upgrades (short of finding them out in the wilderness) before the postgame and those Everfall vendors open up? I was hoping that the Duke's man, when he talked about giving me all aid and resources, would've started selling weapons but nope. So I guess I'll keep rocking the longbow I found from a goblin chest a couple of days ago.

From the small scale to the ridiculously crappy cheer the soldiers give at the end. I have one mage and one sorcerer. The mage is there to cast buffs and heal people, the sorcerer is there to drop meteors and walls of fire on the other people.

A question: I finally got around to doing the grimoire quest and read (possibly in this thread?) that the female bandits aren't supposed to be aggressive. Yet they are and died in large numbers on the way up. Was I supposed to visit the other quest area in the southern mountains first?

Also, I'm close to getting my last vocation level as a ranger. Is it wiser to keep bowin' it up as a Magick Archer or to do assassin / fighter / warrior for physical stats first?

So apparently Soulflayer Canyon is a cool place for cool dudes to hang out and get cool gear. But at what level? I'm level 30ish right now and apparently the biggest threat over there is an ogre which isn't really a threat at all. Have I been lied to or did I grossly blow over the level range where cool dudes can get cool gear?

So basically run, don't walk to Soulflayer Canyon right now? If I understand correctly, the entrance is near / in the rogue camp I am headed for anyway to recover the tome? The idea of sweet longbows is especially appealing.

My sorcerer (sorceress) pawn is awesome.

We were trekking in the woods, returning from the Soulflayer Canyon east entrance fort. I did not realize I need to be disguised as a woman to do things there.

Anyway, we run into some wolves (I'm level 31). "THEY HATE FIRE!", she yells and the next thing I know, two very loving bewildered wolves are getting meteors rained down on them.

Holy overkill!

I'm having some trouble killing the bandits I'm running into. Do I need to grind on wolves and goblins before moving on or should I get a different kind of pawn? I've got my girl (mage) and another guy (also mage) that enchant me and heal me.

Get a third pawn, a warrior, to meat shield for you. As high a level as you can afford with your RC. Those fights in the forest early on in the game are a motherfucking bitch and nearly put me off the game for good. Most bandits go down pretty easy, but those shield bearing super bandits take like zero damage from strider shots, a couple if you're fire enchanted.

The good news is that if you manage to power through (hug the canyon wall as you push south) the rest of the quest is a piece of piss. But I'd run to Gran Soren and back a couple of times to kill the bandits and poo poo for exp. Also from the way you phrased it you haven't done the quest to go into Gran Soren yet so do that, then think about coming back for forest girl. She's not going anywhere.

Question: People on the Internet are talking about farming Soulflayer Canyon but I must be missing something because I've never been able to reset areas. Is Soulflayer Canyon special or should I have done some kind of "don't save, instead load last checkpoint if you don't get great stuff from this chest" trick?

I managed to knock the cyclops in Soulflayer Canyon off the bridge yesterday. Trouble is, one of my pawns was hanging on to his loincloth at the time and went over with him. I tried racing down to the bottom to revive him but couldn't get there in time.

I wouldn't have minded so much but he was the super high level warrior I'd spent a bunch of RC on just 15 minutes earlier

Yeah he seemed really weak. I put a ... what's that Ranger's sniper shot called? Comet shot? Into his eye and knocked pretty much an entire life bar off him. Then he charged, the warrior jumped on his back and he went over the edge of the bridge.

Bye bye 2900 RC.

By the way, what dictates how much RC my pawns return with? Is it some kind of function of how much they paid to hire him or does a pawn accumulate RC while playing in someone else's game?

I'll try the third pawn and figure out what Gran Soren is after work today ;)

It's the main city in the game. The place where you find trainers, vendors and all that good stuff. Trying to get there ought to be a priority just so you can buy a decent set of weapons and train new skills. After that you'll immediately be much more capable. But the start is rough. Someone described the game's difficulty curve really aptly as a difficulty cliff. It feels almost unfair at the start, but then you suddenly find yourself cruising along smoothly.

If you haven't been to Gran Soren yet, you can get there by talking to the commander of the encampment (the place where you fought the hydra), accepting the quest to deliver the hydra head and then doing it.

The missing forest woman quest is still completable after that, as is the well dungeon in the starting village and all that fun stuff.

Heh, thinking about that starting dungeon makes me all nostalgic. I remember the first time I clambered down there and absolutely got my rear end handed to me by some god drat saurians. Now I mow them down by the dozen. Oh memories!
