It is from the Ork codex, it's not an actual short story or book.

But that would basically be the most amazing BL book ever.

"The Last Church" is probably the best insight into the Emperor that the Horus Heresy series has revealed so far. Basically, the Emperor was really good as a Big Idea guy but was terrible in dealing with individual people or even expressing his ideas, really.

That makes perfect sense, if you think about it. A gestalt being who popped into existence fully formed 40,000 years ago would probably think and act very strangely from the perspective of an ordinary human. It's interesting that he generally acts through a number of intermediaries and the people he had to interact with the most (the Primarchs) turned out really weird and he ended up appointing an intermediary to deal with them, too.

I think The Last Church was just awfully loving written, to be honest. I've seen kids in middle school come up with more reasonable arguments against religion. I don't think the author was making the Emperors' arguments/interactions seem weak on purpose, I think he just didn't have any idea how to write that kind of story.

Anyway, now I am at the part where the Chaplain just finished beating up some orks, which felt kind of flat and disconjointed to me, and he just pulled a prayer scroll from the wall that had survived the Ork vandalism. He then crumples it up, and gets pissed over the fact that the Orks have done so much damage to his home.

Maybe it is because all I have been reading as of late is Abnett and ADB, but I am having issues caring about this book. Please tell me that we get some character development and dialog soon. As of right now, I don't give two shits about Chaplain Boreas, or whatever his name is.

The Descent of Angels is a historically bad BL novel, easily the worst of the HH series by a wide margin from all others except the other Dark Angels novels. There are a few others that should absolutely be skipped, but congratulations, you've hit rock bottom and bounced. It's all better from here. Someone will probably chime in with a curated list, go with that. Those of us who read the whole thing in release order as it came out don't wish that experience on anyone. Even you.

I feel dumb because I was reading through them as they first released and intentionally skipped that book because of what I had heard at the time. I don't know what got me to try to read it this time.

I'm guessing so since I remember in Helsreach when Grimaldus parks a thunderhawk in front of Storm Herald and threatens to blow the Titan to bits knowing that it won't be able to raise its shields in time. Would a void shield be capable of being projected at variable distances in that case?

Perhaps, but it isn't an instantaneous on/off button. Transferring power to appropriate systems takes time, and that's assuming the reactor is already up to operating capacity instead of having been brought partially down for repairs and upkeep etc

So Titans engaging beyond visual range would have more time to react to incoming shots and Titans getting into knife fighting range where melee comes out becomes extremely hazardous since the power drain of a shield would make it difficult to maintain for the amount of close range firepower being brought to bear on multiple sections of the machine.

I believe so, yeah. I'm not super familiar with the rules for Titanicus but I believe you do have to worry about shield facing for your big boys. Plus, long range firepower is more rare at that scale so it's easier to predict rather than being in the middle of a city and having a bunch of units in hiding all alpha striking your defenses away in unison
