Eh? Yeah they did. Lorgar brought out the Blessed Lady and the Trisagon and smeared a bunch of Ultramarines all over the place in Betrayer.

Just finished Battle of the Fang. Thought it was pretty unremarkable overall. Now that I've read Wrath of Iron and this, I think I can put my finger on why Wraight's writing doesn't grab me. The prose and descriptions are okay, but none of the characters are all that interesting or evoke any sort of empathy. They all come across as cardboard cutouts for what their role in the story should be. Abnett and ADB need to push more stuff out.

Finished James Swallow's Hammer and Anvil a few days ago. Overall it wasn't too bad. It wasn't ADB-level goodness of course, it it wasn't bad for what it was. Nothing glared out in it as being obviously terrible. The only thing that broke up the pacing was the descriptions of the new necron units. This is the first novel I've read featuring the necrons ever since their new tabletop codex came out, so the author had to include a bunch of their new toys and personality. I wouldn't deliberately seek it out, but if you're looking for some basic bolter porn stuff, you could do much worse.

Fried Chicken posted:Cool. Its a take on the story of Arthur if that informs your opinion. From a few pages back. I've finished two of the three books in the Warlord Chronicles, and I'm loving it so far. I can definitely see how ADB would use this as a basis for his Warmaster series. A lot of the themes are very grimdark 40k-ish, particularly the fading knowledge and skill of the Romans and the dwelling on "If only X had done this, things might be different." Gonna dive right into the last book. If anyone is having withdrawals from the lack of recent 40k books, read the Warlord Chronicles.

Angry Lobster posted:I second that. Finishing the third book and they are pretty good, it has constant decay and religious zealotry similar to what you can find in the 41st millenium. I just finished the third book last night and enjoyed the series overall. The ending seemed somewhat incomplete and rushed, but as a longtime 40k/Dan Abnett reader, I'm used to that kind of thing. Definitely a fun ride, and parallels very well to 40k.

I've heard that was retconned in the latest Space Marine codex, but since I don't play the tabletop game anymore I can't confirm.

Hammer and Anvil was readable. It wasn't great, but it wasn't completely terrible. It did suffer a bit from the "hey look at the shiny new toys in the Necron codex" thing. Lots of overly wordy description of the new Necron units.

Listening to Throne of Lies. I really love the Transformers movie references that ADB keeps slipping in throughout the Night Lords series. This is bad comedy. The defenses were broken, the slaughter would begin. I think there are more, but I do not remember at the moment. At first I thought it was coincidence, but then I saw the caption he put on the image here: http://aarondembskibowden.wordpress.com/2011/08/29/aurelian-cover-art/

It doesn't compare well with peak ADB stuff like Nightlords trilogy and The Emperor's Gift. Nah, I'd say Cadian Blood is his weakest. It's still miles ahead of any other non-Abnett Imperial Guard stuff though. ADB has yet to really disappoint me.
