The latest HTDGM is a must listen. There's almost no talk about Surf Ninja's origin as advertised, but the movie's writer has a million stories about getting involved with the mob during his directorial debut. It's like he was hanging out with Christopher and Paulie Walnuts during the Russian episode of The Sopranos.

"Muff the Button Man" is a great gangster name.

Actually thinking about the latest HTDGM again, this is the second time (after Jack O'Halloran) they've had a guest who claimed to have inside mafia knowledge of the JFK assassination.

If they're doing it with a different co-host each episode, it could have potential, though really just the fact it doesn't have Faraci in it any more means it will automatically be an improvement. If they ever do it with a guest host I really liked, I'd give it a shot.

TBS, which is also owned by Turner like TruTV, is more of a competitor to Comedy Central. Except for Those Who Can't, TruTV is almost entirely low-budget unscripted shows hosted by comedians while TBS has this crazy good block of single-cam comedies + Conan and Sam Bee.

It's kind of impressive how many good shows TBS suddenly started putting out in the last year or two.

Blacklist Table Reads had a surprise announcement that they're ending the podcast, because it's too expensive. It's a shame, I really enjoyed it. Not all the productions were amazing, but all were at least decent to hear performed, and some were really good. Plus they had great interviews with writers and directors around Oscar season.

The original series was really fun, aside from the few episodes with oddly disinterested or combative guests.

Yeah, the two episodes with the two women who absolutely hated James Bond and reviewed GoldenEye and... Casino Royale, I think, were unlistenable. But other than that, I enjoyed all of the original one.

I haven't listened to the new one yet, but I assume the format is completely different - they're not just re-reviewing each movie with a new guest, right?

I lost it at the part with Lapkus crying while trying to find good things to say about Arliss and The Ranch.

I haven't listened to a ton of With Special Guest, but I did like the Sex and the City episode, and the one with the women astronauts.

I listened to a few episodes of the new Canon. They were fine, I think the rotating guests is a good feature, though I still would only ever listen to it when someone of interest is on. I still think Amy has a surprisingly limited range of both film knowledge and critical thinking for a film critic, but she works much better when not paired with that domineering manchild Faraci.

I thought the part in The Last Jedi where Luke sexually assaulted a bunch of women and became a Buddhist in response to being called out on it was a weird direction for the franchise, so I'm thankful that The Canon brought back the most qualified critic in the industry to speak on it.

Amy Nicholson seems to still be really close friends with Faraci despite everything, which is just sad, especially given how she seems generally pretty attentive to gender relations and power imbalances in her reviews. And I can understand her staying friends with him, but more than once since she brought the show back she's made comments along the lines of "Devin is doing a lot of great work to improve himself and I am so proud of him" and it just sets my teeth on edge.

There were a few interesting bits in it, like Amy talking about going to the bizarre WalMart Feminist Film Festival or how some critics have word processors without screens that they type their notes on blindly during screenings, or the few minutes they talk about how to discuss issues with representation in reviews. Chairman Capone
Dec 17, 2008

Yeah, the Austin Powers episode was a slog to get through. About half the episode was actually about Austin Powers to begin with - and I recognize it's normal for James Bonding to wander, but it felt especially bad this episode, maybe because I just did not care for the guest talking about his musical tastes in the 90s or whatever - and even when they did talk about the movie it felt like the most surface-level stuff possible. I had way more fun with the episode on Dr. No with the woman who knew nothing about Bond at all.

I'm on the fence about listening to it, but I do think that Topics is one of the best podcasts I've ever listened to, and one that actually rewards listening to the whole thing in order so you can hear the evolution of the insane backstory Black and Showalter develop for the show and the increasingly petty bureaucratic rules.
