I'll admit it, an idiot with unearned authority who died a totally preventable death because he ignored medical advice to impress an even bigger idiot with even more unearned authority is exactly the kind of person M*A*S*H mocked to the very end, so the the thumbnail is entirely appropriate.

Yeah, that's the thing that scares me about this one versus the previous panics: actual laws are getting passed, giving them an opportunity to actively weaponize that vagueness. Does anyone know of a good roundup for all the anti-CRT laws? I tried the ACLU's page (lol), and the most recent thing they had was from mid-May.

I went on a bit of a V2 research kick after reading Gravity's Rainbow, and one of my favorite things about the operating manual (available in English, thanks Operation Paperclip!) is that it has to repeatedly warn the reader not to drink rocket fuel, with even a poem to make it memorable.

Zeroisanumber posted:Part of the problem with the ME-262 was that the fuel was ridiculously volatile and corrosive. A lot of people were burned by the corrosive fuel, but at least one pilot died when the fuel tank ruptured and flooded the cockpit with corrosive fuel and dissolved him like an antacid tablet. The V-2/A4 was fueled with ethyl alcohol, so it makes a little more sense that they were afraid grunts would partake. The poem was something to the effect of "a soldier drank rocket fuel and went blind, and was so distraught he had some more to kill himself." Fun stuff!

We think of cable as a 90's thing, but it started pretty quick because of mountainous places like Colorado where there wasn't real proper terrestrial coverage. I would imagine that a lot of it was the removal of terrestrial ownership restrictions, allowing big companies to exploit loopholes in new and exciting ways. But most of my knowledge of pre-Clinton telecommunications law comes from the excellent documentary UHF (W.A. Yankovic, 1989) and... some episodes of Mathnet or something, I dunno

I'd imagine that YouTube made his kind of documentary redundant at a theatrical level, as well. Why settle for something produced a year earlier when you could get something with (about) the same production values made earlier that same week? A lot of what he did was based around the idea of talking about issues that weren't otherwise being discussed via a large platform. EDIT - Streaming documentaries are probably a more apt comparison, albeit with a longer turnaround than YouTube. After The War fucked around with this message at 21:28 on Oct 9, 2022 |

Or convince them that Google pays attention to what people open or not, and sending the same message over and over and over to people who aren't opening them is actually very bad and not some brilliant strategy.

It also ties in with the shift from Are Troops being the military (ultimately a federal institution, with all that entails) to local police (fundamentally above the law and free to ignore all other governmental power). You started to see this with Trump talking about Bush's wars in 2016, but it really kicked into high gear in 2020, giving us the Fash Blue Line flag and all that. The Military is compromised by the woke, you see, with its diversity trainings and "tolerance." Right now, that's all because of Biden, but under Trump, it was in spite of him. Either way, they've been largely written off. Cops (and, ideally, local Sheriffs) are much better at eliminating internal enemies in a satisfactorily gruesome way.
