Maybe leave the African ones because it might mess with the Scramble for Africa event in APD but if it doesn't conflict, just change every unciv to a civ and you'll be behind enough the Euopeans will still maintain the edge they had historically.

At first I thought that you meant "Swap every nation in terms of civilization", and laughed. So Great Britain, the USA, etc. are suddenly uncivilized, while the nations of Africa and Asia are suddenly civilized! 19th Century Imperialism in reverse!

Every time I've fired up HOI3 and looked at the troop deployments and theatre management webs, my eyes sort of glazed over and I started to feel very stupid. I like managing the politics and tech research stuff, but holy crap is that other stuff a mess. Where do you even start learning?

Hence why I asked for a Kersch-like educational LP back a couple pages.

You know, it would be really nice if Paradox ever got to the modern day, and made something more like a political / economic simulator with a lessened military aspect. So, something following where HOI4 will leave off, at the end of the Cold War. I imagine that managing a modern political state, especially if it was sort of character-based, would be pretty interesting.

Imagine trying to get your Senator elected president, with a periodic election map, making campaign promises, etc. Or how about instead of playing as a particular leader or the nation as a whole, you played as a party? So you'd have to do all sorts of CK2-like backroom dealings with political figures, lobbyists and PACs, corporations, and the like.

That gameplay mechanic was actually added in EUIII+, normally you just need your colonial range to extend to America and then get colonists from something (vanilla EUIII; yearly you get 1 if you're Catholic, a bunch of national ideas give you colonists, and bordering hordes gives you colonists. EUIII+; yearly you get 1 for doing the colonial decision and then that unlocks the NIs you can also take for more). I think it was to prevent things like Poland dominating North America while AI Portugal hasn't even grabbed Azores.

You'll need Naval Tech 16 I believe to do the decision without a single European province, there should still be plenty of California and some South America up for grabs by then.

I'd also been wondering about that. How do I get colonists? Do I just need Naval Tech 16 then? Or do I need to build something, adopt a certain naval idea, or click a certain decision?

I had a completely :catstare: moment this afternoon, playing as the Ming Empire. I had absorbed Dai Viet several decades ago in a peaceful annexation. Periodically, the provinces would be afflicted by some minor rebellions, but this time something like 25 regiments rose up eventually while my armies were occupied in dealing with Manchu rebels in the far northeast.

So I march an army down and it gets defeated. No problem I'll just raise a bunch of longspear infantry and cavalry archers to crush these rebels, an army so large that they'll surely be crushed.

Imagine my surprise when a stack of 92 regiments is defeated by a plucky band of mere 17,000 Vietnamese patriots.

I was frustrated by this constant persistence but, as a Vietnamese person, I couldn't help but feel a bit of pride. :unsmith:

The more I think about the upcoming East vs. West game, the more I am convinced that it would be very interesting to play a Paradox political simulator-type game that takes place from around 1970 up to the first decade of the 21st century, with a lesser focus on military matters than HOI3, and more of a focus on politics and economics. It might be like Victoria 2 with the focus on economics, and CK2 with its political intrigue and backroom dealing. I thought the whole election and political party thing with Victoria 2 was pretty neat, and had more potential, but they could've gone even deeper with it.

Plus, the forty years between 1970 and 2010 were decades of such massive change. I'd be really interested to play through economic globalization, preside over the 1973 Oil Crisis, the rise of the Internet, the industrialization of China, or the Great Recession. It would be awesome to deal with all sorts of things like extremist terrorist groups, multinational corporations, and Intergovernment organizations like the E.U. or the U.N.

Imagine trying to win the 2008 US election as the Republican Party! Or try playing as Thailand during the Asian Financial Crisis!

Or maybe I'll have to wait for the sequel that takes it up to the present day.

It'd be really interesting to play as China and go through the Cultural Revolution, the end of the Mao Period, the reforms of Deng Xiaoping and the free market reforms and double-digit growth of the 90s. It'd be fascinating to start as a developing country and aspire to superpower status.

Yeah, if those don't exist then the problem is practically solved anyway! (and America suddenly becomes harder to conquer.)

That seems like the best solution to me, as trade is both a measure of wealth (which allows investment in new ideas), and a function of your contact with the rest of the world, which can introduce those ideas. And instead of the simple neighbor bonus, you would instead get bonuses for actually getting involved with those neighbors, possibly discarding the need for tech groups and instead letting the actions of the country define where it belongs. As long as there are still plausible restrictions to where you can trade depending on various techs and ideas, that should allow a sensible development without straitjacketing the player.

I thought about this some more, and the more I think about it, the more it makes sense.

Let's say that in 1400, China has the relative advantage in terms of technological advancement in comparison to Europe, in most technologies. But the more trade you have, the more likely you may experience diffusion of ideas, etc., that may reduce stability. So China closes down its trade. By then, many of its technologies have already diffused to its nearest neighbors in India and the Middle East, so by the time China closes up, Europe starts to get trade idea diffusion from the Middle East and starts to rapidly technologically advance.

Meanwhile, because European countries are so close and interlinked, ideas diffuse rapidly along the many trade routes that they have with each other, so Europe quickly starts to catch up to the isolationist China.

I think this would be a great system to model the technological stagnation of isolationist powers, like the relatively slow advancement of Japan. Also, this way it gives the players a way to directly influence the progress of their society without straitjacketing them into arbitrary (and somewhat racist) groups based on proximity to "The West".

A Buttery Pastry posted:

You wouldn't need a slider really, not for the player at least. Just have higher volumes of trade cause more instability, while also increasing tech gain.

Right, the role of the player would be to create or close trade routes with countries that have access to the techs they want. So, for example, if you have X amount of trade volume with a certain neighboring country, it increases the tech growth in areas that they have that are higher than yours by +0.0X a month or what have you. I think that'd be a lot more interesting, because there's something more than just abstract boxes to check or whatever, something where you can interact with the map and other countries. So you could cut off trade to try to monopolize techs that you have an advantage in, but it'd have disadvantages in decreasing income and decreasing the chances of you getting other advances.

Thanks for the tips, DrProsek! I'm playing with the Pop Divided mod. And, actually, as it happens, I managed to win the Civil War somehow, mostly by practicing the tactics you described to me. I did the King Cotton decision two three days into the simulation, but Britain and Mexico didn't declare war on the USA until like 2 years after.

On independence, I used the "Second Declaration of Independence" decision to make all the states into Confederate cores, so no 5-year clockwork wars.

After about ten years of peace, I declared war on Mexico and made them my puppet, but just a year ago they suffered a major revolution and threw off my influence. :( How do I gain influence, anyway?

Also, now I'm not really sure what to do! It's like 1876, and things are going... well, I guess? I don't really know what long-term goals I should be setting myself, as it's not quite straightforward the way Crusader Kings 2 is. I've been gradually steering the CSA on the road towards abolition and socialism, though.

It's really funny to see! After independence in 1863, the upper house was pretty much controlled by the Whigs, but by 1876 under my guidance, it's this messed-up plurality where the Conservative party only has a 30% plurality over all the others, which includes Liberals, Socialists, Anarcho-Liberals, Reactionaries and even 8% Communists!

Does it have to be done by revolution? Or is there any way to gradually foment more support for the socialist party and oust the Whigs in an election?
