Fantastic new OP.

I think I may need to do a clean install so I can start over with modding via the plugin manager instead of just dropping files into folders manually. As long as I reinstall the same mods I'm running right now, my save should continue to work – right?

Also this is amusing to me:

quote:

Good Initial Home Sectors:
...
Omicron Lyrae

as there have been big rear end battles raging in that system in my game for the past copule of days. I dropped in there looking for trouble when I first got my M6 and was immediately obliterated by about ten Terran Yokohamas who were gate camping and had just finished gang banging an Argon Colossus & support craft.

And that's how I learned the value of advanced satellites and scout ships! :downs:

Another question... is there a way in vanilla AP (or with mods) to direct ships other than the one I'm piloting to an empty point in space? In your own ship you can just right click anywhere in the sector map and you'll autopilot to that location. However I can't seem to figure out if it's possible to do this with other ships I own.

There's the "move to position" command, but that seems to require a specific destination (eg. a station, ship, asteroid, etc).

X3 would be like 80 million times better and easier to use if I could just select one of my ships in the sector map and then right click on where I want it to go, instead of always having to issue commands via r > right arrow > right arrow > enter > c > etc.

Don't get your hopes up too high, it works but there isn't a cockpit so basically you're just turning the camera and it ends up not being that great. I haven't tried it in a while though so maybe it has improved.

There's a pretty good cockpit mod actually. I'd recommend grabbing HUD_info_2d, because while the cockpit looks cool, in some ships your energy levels / missile count / mini-map get a little too squished and they become hard to read.

I can never decide whether or not to use the cockpit view, though. While it's great for :qq: MY IMMERSION :qq: it does make dog fighting a little trickier as in some ships (most notably Argon ships) you lose a portion of visible space due to the ... "hood" of the ship (I guess you'd call it that).

e: This is what I'm talking about (god ImageShack is terrible). The hood of the ship is like ~20 pixels below your targeting reticule, so it's easy for an enemy to change directions slightly and for you to lose track of him. But this is a super minor complaint, really.

e2: Also, if you're not living in the 90s and actually have a 16:9 monitor, you see a tiny bit less of space.

So I am just about to start Albion Prelude after playing X3:TC for a while before my old computer died. I was just wondering if there is a benefit to doing story missions, or if I should just go off and do my own thing right away.

You get a M5 scout and then a M6 after maybe 3 exceedingly simple missions. After that there's a string of like 5 or 6 where you don't get much of anything except a few spacebux here and there.

Get the M6 and then go dick around. If you're in any of the war zones you'll want it... your starting M3 won't last long unless you avoid nearly every fight.

My M1 has 60 docking slots, I've usually got around 40 heavy fighters, 10 lighter ones, and it can also dock a transport ship and an M6 to the docking clamps on the underside. Not that I ever really need the M6 since anything besides a capital ship that gets close to my carrier gets shredded by PD and the capital ships get shredded by heavy fighters (and Wraith missiles :black101:), but it's nice to have just in case.

Grab a cockpit mod and launching out of your carrier along with a wing of 20 other ships is awesome. Grab bounce too though or half of your ships will slam into the carrier trying to land.

Should also be mentioned that you can get a super small carrier-type-deal (TM ship) super early in the game.

My current game is about... oh maybe 10 hours old, and I roll around with my Magnetar hauling my Nova + 3 other lovely fighters I capped with my Centaur providing security. There's nothing quite like seeing a big Xenon force on the edge of a sector, hopping into my fighter and scrambling my wings to intercept. IT IS SO MUCH FUN.

I'm trying to grab a Mercury just for tooling around with trader stuff while I save up for a Mistral, just something to get me more used to all this. The problem is the Shipyard in Argon Prime doesn't have any. :v: What gives? The wiki said that every Argon shipyard has some type of it. I'm running XRM, which I think is what made them disappear and I have no clue if they've just been moved or what.

e:Think I found the problem. Sounds like he made some civilian shipyards and military shipyards.

After playing with Improved Races (in the OP) for the first time over the weekend, I now consider it an absolutely necessary mod for exactly this reason. Buying and outfitting ships in X3 is a huge pain in the rear end and is not fun in any way shape or form. Being able to commission ships with loadouts for an additional fee is amazing.

Also, man I wish this game were less buggy. About half the time when it's working correctly it is incredibly fun, but the other half of the time I feel like I end up losing a lot of hard work because of stupid AI. I now understand why out of sector combat is generally preferable to in sector combat, but :smith: that's no fun.

Alright, I'm apparently terrible with EST. Can someone give me some guidance? Pretend I know nothing, because that is basically the truth.

A few specific questions:

1) What starting sectors around Argon Sector M148 are any good? All my traders are sitting around with terminal "EST on standby..." messages. I know they do that for a bit when you tell them to start trading, but they've been sitting there for like 15 minutes now.
2) The OP for EST mentions that I should be using the "Economics Trader: Ware Add/Remove" command to select a specific good to trade. I can't seem to find this...?

So far my four TS traders have made about 22k over the course of an hour, which doesn't seem right to me. Please help, I am so tired of the stock market.

A couple things Empire's Edge south of Paranid Prime is the best starting sector for automatic traders by far. The best way to equip an EST ship is with a mk3 trading software from a Teladi dock, that way you don't need to mess with adding or removing wares. The EST on standby could be a few things: they saw an enemy, have a full cargo hold, or most likely can't find a good trade.

Argon m148 is a pretty terrible starting location, you'll have trouble trading in sector and its surrounded by mostly empty sectors. Try moving to Black Hole sun, or Nathan's Voyage nearby. Fair warning there will be Xenon that show up, just a fact of life in that area of space.

If the traders have made money at all it means you have the basics set up correctly, its almost certainly a combination of low ranked pilots and lack of trading opportunities.

Thanks for the info! I have all my traders equipped with trading software mk3 by default (Improved Races, I love you), so that answers that question. In terms of sectors... is there some area on the map that's way, way better than the area within 10 jumps or so of Argon m148? Honestly I'm only there because that's where the Argon Patriot start sticks you, and I've been having so much fun blowing Terrans up that I haven't really explored.

I'm happy to stick some dudes in Black Hole Sun and Nathan's Voyage, but I assume I'll need to explore more sectors to get more dudes trading otherwise I'll flood my immediate area. I'm also happy to escort my little trading convoy to sectors that don't suck. Where should I head?

Thanks both! Satellites... See, just when I think I start understanding the game I miss a key item like this. Of course my traders can't find any good trades... they can't see poo poo. I'm already using a couple of satellites to monitor stock markets, so it only makes sense to monitor potential trade zones. Duh.

I think I'll plop a few satellites in the sectors surrounding Black Hole Sun and Nathan's Voyage and leave my current traders there, because trying to protect them all as they cross the Terran / Argon war front and a bunch of unexplored sectors seems like a slow, boring and idiotic endeavor.

When I set up my initial batch of traders out west do I need to manually direct them to home bases in different sectors so they don't overlap too much while they level? Or are they going to be smart enough to jump a sector or two in order to get a deal? I'm not sure how much hand holding I need to do.

You get a M6 after like two missions anyways (at least for Argon Patriot).

And yes, Katanas are terrible and have some hilarious blind spots. I was taking them down solo with my Elite early in the game. The only thing better than fighting one Katana is fighting two because then they just blast each other to pieces trying to hit you.

Silly Terrans. Silly Katanas.

Alright. Screw saving in stations and screw one time use salvage insurance. I am tired of losing a bunch of progress because the game bugs out and kills me / half my fleet.

Is there some sort of cheat or mod that will allow me to save anytime, anywhere without having to carry around a billion salvage insurance thingies?

Also if my fleet doesn't plow directly into every single object in space, blowing themselves up.

So, am I crazy or does Rebirth have zero support for flight sticks? At this point I'd be happy with it as a "gently caress around in space" game until modders can work their magic, but considering there aren't enough axes on a 360 controller for all the flight controls, I can't even do that.

I've googled around a bit but haven't had any luck finding absolute confirmation one way or the other, just a lot of posts with people complaining.

kedo

You know, I would like the highways if instead of that stupid minigame you just had to steer a little bit to stay in the tube. Bonus points if there's the occasional debris or other ship you have to avoid. It's not like they don't already have flying physics and controls in the game.

Then again judging by everything else, I'm sure this was added at the very last minute or something as a "lets get this crap out the door" maneuver.

If only you could earn some good credits without having to micromanage the hell out of dozens upon dozens of ships and complexes...

Soooo... not to turn you off other mods, but spend literally 10 minutes playing the stock market/SETA game and you'll have enough money to fund a small army. Basically just buy stock in an item that has a lot of turnover (eg. Construction Equipment which will have tens of thousands of units vs. Debris which will have only a couple hundred) when the index is 100+, then sell it when the index is low... maybe 40 or below.

I simply cannot wrap my brain around the game's terrible UI well enough to manage a huge empire, so I use that tactic to fund a small fleet which I then use to terrorize whatever system I'm in. Bonus points if you park satellites outside a stock market station (forget what they're called) so you can continue to explore and gently caress with the rest of the galaxy while you play the markets.

Has anyone successfully gotten an X52 Pro working with the game? Last I checked you couldn't bind like half of the buttons (including the trigger ) and a couple of the axes were unrecognized, so it was more or less unusable.

I've been using one since release, but to do it I had to delete all references to joystick binds in the config XML and start from scratch. When I bound a few axes they would show up as weird poo poo in game but were described correctly in the config. I have a regex in my post history that you can use to find and replace all joystick entries with blank space.

The game is definitely in a bad state and I'm not happy with my purchase, but modders are working hard to fix the game and the egosoft patches have improved my performance. Basically I think that this game was released in alpha, between egosoft and modders it will be a "beta" in 6 months to a year, and after that it will be fun to play for most people.

Christ... I'll give that a shot, thanks much. Any way I could convince you to pastebin your xml config (or at least the relevant parts)? I haven't even looked in any of those files yet so it'd be super helpful to at least have a general template to follow.

Then again I'm not sure why I'd want to spend time figuring this out when the game is in such terrible shape. Masochism, I suppose.

Everything but this. IMO it's one of the best fighters in the game and it's not for sale anywhere (w/o mods or hacking it in) – you only get the one you start with. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Also flying it is approximately eight million times more fun than flying a Centaur, which handles about as well as a school bus.

I did pretty much exactly what you did, however I just flew around in my Nova and used my Centaur as a wingman. In fights he'd act as a tank while I'd circle around using him as a shield and picking off the smaller fighters he couldn't hit. Good times.

So what's the gooncensus with the patch? Is the game finally worth investing at least a little bit of time in? I've left it installed but untouched since launch and am itching to get back into a space game of some sort.

Do the new game starts still have a storyline attached?
