^^Brazil starts moving once you get Jungle science and Brazilwood camps, which essentially makes Jungles poo poo out everything but production. I like the idea of Pracinhas going to war, boosting tourism to the place you have DECLARED WAR ON Snipee posted:I really wanted to play as Byzantium, but once I actually went for it, it was hugely underwhelming. The thing about religion is that you need to buckle the gently caress DOWN if you want your religion to blossom. That means beelining shrines and Stonehenge and taking Piety (maybe not as your opener, but like, after three policies into Tradition).

I feel as though Legion soldiers take longer to build roads than Workers. Is that just confirmation bias? Rome is great, though. Start early, build up a bunch of legions and trebuchets, and just straight up roll on the first Civ you meet and take their cap.

I'm pretty into Portugal right now, but that might be because I just really like coastal cities. (I have about 9 Crab luxuries in my current game.) Building a good production city, spitting out Naus every other turn, and shipping them around the world for money and city state bonuses.

I can see what they're getting at. I tend to not really like most mounted units, except for scouting and snatching up cities quickly after they're down to no health. Winged Hussars are pretty good, though.

^^ It really is dependent on your city's surroundings / what city-states are your friends / if you're at war. However, I tend to focus like this: +++Food building available, ++Science building available, +what the city needs right now, be it happiness / lowered stealing likelihood /faith. The more food you have, the more population, and the more population you have, more science. Fit in Gold buildings if you have a lot of Gold tiles nearby, but don't break your neck on them unless you have Population to spare on Specializing there. If building a few troops is cheaper than building a Worker, then you should build the troops, threaten a city-state and enslave a Worker. I tend to be very slow on founding new cities. The main things I look for are ocean resources (three or more fish/crabs/whales will be enough for a booming coastal city), land luxuries and resources, proximity to Natural Wonders / mountains for observatories, and hills to turn into mines for production (which I tend to be weak at) and to slow down any invaders. A river is nice, but not mandatory. Grain of salt, of course; I'm not a PRO CIV V player.

I got bombed by prophets and lost my faith. Nobody will build cities on the sea and whenever someone builds one within range it gets razed in two turns because they're fighting each other. Playing on large, for 20 goddamn city states, and I have found four. In the world. If there are 16 other city states here then they're all crammed like sardines in the the swirling mass of fog of war that I assume hides some land mass, but not nearly enough to explain where the other city states are. There's a mod that restores that kind of functionality, along with Vassalage and Tech trading. Crashes like a motherfucker, though.

Has anyone played At The Gates yet? Just in alpha right now, but it seems potentially interesting. Also: I would sooner have flaccid religions that I can rename to 'a hella joint' than named religions that give me a malus to growth in favor of production.

There's a nice little mod that lets you build an observatory if the mountain is two tiles away from the city, which I think is pretty reasonable. (Of course, I think just having the mountain within your borders should count, but what do I know? )

Putin It In Mah rear end posted:Not to be all jingoistic but I think America won the Spanish-American war and was on the winning side, nominally, of the Great War. I don't know if you can say there was a winner in the Civil War but the Union ultimately prevailed. The best part of the Civil War is that no matter who had won, America would have won. But on the other hand, no matter who you back, you're also anti-American. So I guess we have to consider it a wash. Also, to the Egypt game up there, you need some military units right now. They are ready for war.

There's a Churchill mod in the Workshop that I'm trying out in a game. He's pretty cool - like a naval-focused America. All naval units get +2 to Movement, which I thought was pretty good, because until Navigation, I don't like fighting a naval war. But then, I realized that all embarked units get +2 to Movement. It's not really balanced too well - Churchill with the Great Lighthouse and Exploration opened can see just about forever and zip around a sixth of the map in a turn. Oh, and he has twice as long sea trade routes. A little broken, but the Rapture / Geth bloc in the west is threatening to pull away. And I think Andrew Ryan may have bribed Attila to go to war with me. Pope Pius in the East has been asking me to go to war with Holland for quite a while now. Gandhi's been my best trade partner for a while, but I have been considering bringing Western Imperialism to those godless natives.

Washout posted:What are the best mods for making managing happiness a bit less onerous? The best thing I've read about it so far is that happiness seems like 70% of the game, you pretty much have to spend the most time and effort of your civ managing happiness and worrying about what religion or culture you are taking is almost totally dependant on which one will give you the most happiness to the exclusion of everything else. Really Advanced Setup -> No Happiness setting. Alternatively, get one of the mods that adds more luxury resources, and the mods that gets rid of AI happiness bonuses to put an abundance of luxuries on the field, but more competition for them. Or, try Gandhi. His bonus works weird ways with going wide.
