Shaka is already plotting against Zulu on turn 42. :stare:

I always seem to struggle with the early game the most, I always feel behind in getting out Settlers and such. My usual order is monument-shrine-scout and then see about the Great Library for that early research boost, research Pottery/Writing/Husbandry/Trapping/Calendar, with Drama and Poetry as my free tech. I usually just get workers and settlers from Liberty, but I was trying out a Piety rush as the Celts and the Austrians have already grabbed a city spot I was looking at.

I think I might have to stop reflexively grabbing the Great Library, I'm probably just ingrained from Civ III where it was ridiculously good.

I'm with you. The early game makes me feel like I'm getting destroyed by the AI. They're all at 2 or 3 cities and I still haven't produced a settler yet.

I usually go scout-monument-shrine-settler and by the time I get the settler going, I usually have the option to go for the Great Library. If I do that, then I'm even further behind in settlers.

In my current game, I have just completed the Great Library, playing as Poland and my first settler is on the way, but France is pushing into me with crappily placed cities. So I know that if I have to make an aggressive push I won't even have any puppets that are worth keeping.

I honestly think I just need to turn off the scoreboard on the right side of the screen and it would help my game a lot because I wouldn't use that worthless early game metric to gauge my progress.

The one thing that really annoys me is the inability to set up colonies on resources, especially since you're encouraged to only have a few cities.

Am I the only one that refuses to trade Great Works if I like them? It may give me a +1 theme bonus, but I'll be damned if I have to give up Le Mis.

Well, if they didn't build lots of AA, their units would just get bombed to dust. I doubt the AI even really knows how to use them and just covers their units from air attack by happenstance.

Evidently, since they just sent about 5 bombers in a row at 1 unit that would instantly regenerate covered by an AA gun that instantly shot all their bombers down.

So Venice question: what kind of victory should I be going for? Diplomacy's out since I'll need to puppet city-states, and Conquest is probably out too, but are Culture and Science victories feasible with such a small empire?

Two questions. First, what's the best civ for raw growth rate? I'm gonna get into a multiplayer game and wanted to get a civ that allows me to get big fast to keep ahead in science. Secondly, does Civ 4 need all the expansions? I got it for free in the BNW sale mess-up and was thinking of trying it out.

They got slaughtered, but they bogged down the enemy long enough for my army to come to the rescue. I love the landschnect mechanic.

I really wish it scaled- Swiss mercs-Landschnects-Foreign Legion-Soldiers of Fortune or something like that. Still, in the MP game I'm playing that'll really save my rear end against an agressive but backward Japanese player.

I'm kinda beginning to get the hang of it now, and I'm really starting to like this game, but I have a few further questions.

Firstly, I have a question about Neb's Great Scientist bonus. People here say that I should always be using GSes to build Academies well into the Information Age. However, the numbers don't really work out all that well; I get 10 beakers per turn from an academy, or I can burn the GS for at least 1500 beakers in a single shot (and it goes up extremely fast, I think some of my later ones burn for upwards of 2000 beakers). So I need a whole 150 turns for the academy to break even, and I need to constantly work a crappy tile in order to even harvest those beakers in the first place. I've got five academies already, what am I missing here? The Academies started out making 8 BPT and then switched to 10 BPT at some point. Now I have one foot in the Atomic era and one in the Modern, and researching Refrigeration suddenly switched them to 12 BPT. What the hell is going on?

Another question: I tried to bottle up a shitton of Faith in the early game, though I kinda gave up on my religious ambitions somewhere around the Renaissance era, and ironically most of my Faith is coming from an alien religion generating a shitton of Desert Folklore in a rubbish city I'd annexed as a sort of forward military base half way around the world. My plan is to initiate the Space Race and then immediately burn my 5000 stored Faith on Great Engineers to rush spaceship construction before anybody can react. Is this a worthwhile strategy, in terms of early-game opportunity cost? Am I doing it right at all (i.e. is 5000 Faith way too small a payoff)? If so, is there any way to suppress Great Prophet generation so I can actually store this poo poo up before the later stages of the game?

Yet another question: Is that forward military base worth it? Right now the game has basically devolved to myself and two other superpowers (China and America) who like to take turns backstabbing me. The forward military base acts as a nice lightning rod for these flash conflicts; they roll in, get a decent chunk of their massive armies killed defeating all of the city's defenders, walk off without even bothering to lay seige to the city, then they sue for peace and offer me some minor reparations. Meantime I keep teching like a madman back home (and they keep stealing my tech despite the fact that I have a Constabulary and a Police Station as well as a Special Agent running counter-intelligence, guh). The fact that I have virtually zero production on my home island is proving to be extremely painful and I can't just keep throwing 1,000 gold at a time on military units to compensate for it. A war on my home turf would be very damaging.

I might actually drag this game to a science victory, then try again with my knowledge from this playthrough and make sure I have better production, then build up a stronger military at home and slap the poo poo out of anybody who tries to come at me. This appeasement poo poo is annoying. I keep rolling absolutely terrible starting resources and locations, though, I don't want to have to deal with schmoozing/rigging/bribing City States constantly in order to have any resources whatsoever, yet I'm forced to.

Just a heads-up, GE can't rush spaceship parts without a third-tier Order idea. Science is usually my bottleneck in a spaceship victory.
