On ideology chat: Once they're at the worst level of unhappiness, is there anything else you can do to speed it along? I thought of cutting luxuries, but that seems a lot of effort for not much gain.

Shaka is already plotting against Zulu on turn 42. I always seem to struggle with the early game the most, I always feel behind in getting out Settlers and such. My usual order is monument-shrine-scout and then see about the Great Library for that early research boost, research Pottery/Writing/Husbandry/Trapping/Calendar, with Drama and Poetry as my free tech. I usually just get workers and settlers from Liberty, but I was trying out a Piety rush as the Celts and the Austrians have already grabbed a city spot I was looking at.

I think I might have to stop reflexively grabbing the Great Library, I'm probably just ingrained from Civ III where it was ridiculously good.

Am I the only one that refuses to trade Great Works if I like them? It may give me a +1 theme bonus, but I'll be damned if I have to give up Le Mis. e: holy gently caress stop coveting my lands I'm doing the one city challenge here. Pvt.Scott posted:Well, if they didn't build lots of AA, their units would just get bombed to dust. I doubt the AI even really knows how to use them and just covers their units from air attack by happenstance. Evidently, since they just sent about 5 bombers in a row at 1 unit that would instantly regenerate covered by an AA gun that instantly shot all their bombers down.

So Venice question: what kind of victory should I be going for? Diplomacy's out since I'll need to puppet city-states, and Conquest is probably out too, but are Culture and Science victories feasible with such a small empire? e: also do you reccommend just using the beta patch?

However, I've never seen an AI actually launch a nuclear attack, probably because I always obliterate or appease anyone that completes the Manhattan Project. How many people here have been nuked? Is there a message that pops up to tell you it happened? In a post-game war with America, they did hit my army carpet with a few nukes, so it does happen.

How's Rome for a domination victory? I tried the Zulu but ended up not putting out enough troops, happiness, or money; thought the bonus to stuff in the capital would make it easier to build up conquered cities.

So I'm playing a multiplayer game with my family and I'm going to get nuked in the near future. How can I defend against it? I won't have nonproliferation in time, can I shoot down the incoming nukes? I don't have uranium myself (there appears to be 4 in the entire game )

Yeah, he's got cities in range of mine, we're right on the border. I've only got one city and it's protected by a line of units on forts, if he drops a few nukes on my border I'm totally dead.

Two questions. First, what's the best civ for raw growth rate? I'm gonna get into a multiplayer game and wanted to get a civ that allows me to get big fast to keep ahead in science. Secondly, does Civ 4 need all the expansions? I got it for free in the BNW sale mess-up and was thinking of trying it out. e: wow, all the expansions together are more than the base game + all the expansions. Yeah, I have literally never had an issue with happiness outside warmongering except for slowing when I get my first few cities up, which isn't helped by Gandhi at all. e: so, I'm trying out early warmongering as China, and I just conquered a non-costal city on the other side of the continent (it's a capital, so I can't raze it.) KKKlean Energy posted:Yeah. That saved my rear end in a run of the Africa scenario - one of my cities was poised to be over-run by hordes of enemies before my reinforcements could arrive, but I had an assload of cash, so I bought like 10 landschnects in a single turn. They got slaughtered, but they bogged down the enemy long enough for my army to come to the rescue. I love the landschnect mechanic. I really wish it scaled- Swiss mercs-Landschnects-Foreign Legion-Soldiers of Fortune or something like that. Still, in the MP game I'm playing that'll really save my rear end against an agressive but backward Japanese player.

I've only played a little SMAC so this might just be me, but while the AI wasn't that great I did like the way it behaved- I could generally tell why it liked/disliked me, they didn't do the Civ 3 thing of marching settlers all the way through your territory to that one hex of tundra outside of your culture, it didn't backstab you needlessly or declare war for no goddamn reason.
