So, I'm looking more for a solution than a specific pair of headphones at the moment, but I haven't been able to find much info to help. I work in a setting (developer) where I generally want to both listen to music, and also not be locked into my own world if someone wants to get my attention. My poor man's solution has been to just stick in one head phone and leave my other ear open so I can overhear if my coworkers are discussing an issue I can help with or if someone wants to ask me something. This obviously is terrible and having to miss out on portions of the song or even the entire instrumental / vocal part is limiting as I'll just avoid that music. I've been using some cheap in ear buds recently so even having both in on low volume makes it pretty hard to hear around me.

Anyone find a good way to get the best of both worlds while they work?

You'll want something open, meaning that they let sound in & out. Now, do you want over the ear, or on the ear?

I'm looking for my first "real" set of headphones for PC gaming. I don't really have anything other than a Logitech H150, so I'm willing to go big here.

Budget - $100 - 150 USD. I'm no audiophile, but I'm more than willing to up the budget if it seems worth it.
Source - My PC, with both USB and headphone jacks available.
Isolation Requirements - None really, I plan on using these in my room almost exclusively.
Preferred Type of Headphone - Circumaural. Open is a must, because I plan on wearing these for hours at a time. Comfort and quality are a must, while isolation is not.
Preferred Tonal Balance - I'd mostly be gaming with these, with a bit of music and VOIP. I'd like a good balance, I guess? Maybe with slightly more bass?
Past Headphones - No idea on the brands, but most of the previous stuff I've tried has been really uncomfortable, because my ears are super weird / sensitive, and after a while it hurts to have earbuds or headphones in or on them, while closed stuff has made my ears feel sweaty.
Preferred Music - I'd be using these mostly for gaming, VOIP, and podcasts, but the music I listen to the most is definitely classic rock or blues.

Thank you very much!
Take a look at these.

Similar to the Vsonic VSD1S, a somewhat V shaped frequency curve, the piston has good bass, but doesn't go quite as deep or have as much on the low end, and I don't think it's quite as prone to sibilence on the other end. I'd have to give back to back listening to see which is more detailed. The piston has less than average isolation.

They're fun sounding and sound better than what they should for their price range.

Hmm. I've been trying some (admittedly cheapo) triple flange tips on my Pistons, and I really don't find them comfortable at all.

Also I find it hard to imagine that just isolation will help in this case - the noise is really pervasive - and I know that my colleagues who have noise cancelling really seem to think it makes a difference. But maybe it's all snake oil and it's just gonna be a side effect of flying in a tiny plane. I guess even if I didn't hear the sound of the engines at all, I'd still be feeling the vibration and that's pretty uncomfortable as well.

In all fairness, there's a world of difference in the isolation between the Pistons and most any Etymotic, a company who also makes professional earplugs. A good seal in your ears with a set of ER-4's will make the sound of your body louder to you than airliner noise. Right now I have a set of Etymotic EREK-5's in and am snapping my fingers in front of my face. I hear it as much through the inside as the outside.

Budget - $100-150
Source - iPhone & Laptop
Isolation Requirements - Maybe a little bit, mostly will be using these at work which is quiet, but also walking around campus.
Preferred Type of Headphone - IEM
Preferred Tonal Balance - Idunno - Balanced I guess
Past Headphones - I use a pair of Sennheiser HD555s at home and love them to death. Right now I use these stupid Earpods that came with my iPhone at work, but I hate them because they fall out if someone breaths within 20 feet of me.
Preferred Music - I listen to a bunch of different stuff, preferably something that sounds good with whatever I listen to in them.

Try something with a Etymotic like shape, basically a straight tube with an angle at the cord, it seems like there's less fiddle factor with IEM's shaped like that. Angle the tip up then forward a bit while inserting and they should be good. Try different tips until you find something that works.

AFA what IEM's, the Etymotic HF5, Vsonic VC1000 are both in that price range, have a balanced sound and have that form factor. The HiFi Man RE-400 kinda sorta has that shape, except fatter.

Okay so I'm planning on returning the XPT100s. While they tended to overall sound a lot better than my previous cans (Steelseries Siberia), the bass on them is woefully lacking. I know it's unfair to compare the two in that regard since "gaming" headphones always have jacked up bass, but I guess I've just become so accustomed to that baseline that the XPTs just sound underwhelming to me. In addition to this, the XPT100s pinch my ears like a motherfucker after an hour of use. So I guess to avoid getting burned again, I'll formally ask for some advice on what to buy next this time around.

Budget - $200
Source - Desktop, no amp.
Isolation Requirements - Ideally, I'd prefer isolated. Will still accept open cans if they don't leak too much. Way more concerned about sound leaking out than leaking in.
Preferred Type of Headphone - Over ear, on ear, don't really care.
Preferred Tonal Balance - Neutral, maybe a little bit more bass than usual. Not necessarily anything super bass heavy in particular.
Past Headphones - XPT100, everything besides the bass was a huge step up from the Siberia V2s I owned before.
Siberia V2, grew up off a history of lovely gaming headsets so I'm just too used to having strong bass.
Preferred Music - Varied

I've discussed this with a friend and he suggested a few headphones, linked below. I'd like to know which set would suit me the best, or if you guys in the thread have any better suggestions.
Sennheiser HD 598
Audio Technica ATH AD900X - though apparently these leak like a motherfucker so I'm pre-emptively marking them off.
Audio Technica ATH A900X - the closed can version of the above. Apparently bass-ier than the open version, which might be a plus.

Beyerdynamic DT-770-80
The AT's won't have the bass you want. The 598 will have more, but IMO, the 770-80 is pretty close to what you're looking for.

Source - Desktop computer at work running Spotify. No fancy sound card.
Isolation Requirements - Isolation is very important.
Preferred Type of Headphone - Full size
Preferred Tonal Balance - I'm not sure. I love hearing minute details in music but I also like bass. Probably a balanced sound with good bass.
Past Headphones - ATH-M50
Preferred Music - Tons of everything, listed in order of listening frequency: Rock (psychedelic new and old, acoustic, modern); Metal (doom, prog, death); Electronic (trance, psybient);
