I played these a bunch a couple of years back, then promptly forgot about them until today. And apparently I'm not the only one, the games web presence is pretty much limited to a forum that still has a little bit of activity, and the creator doesn't seem to be interested anymore.

Anybody know a thing or two about these? I'd like to get back into it but don't really remember anything more than "This game lets you eat Bacon Tubesteak. GOTY.".

Gearhead 1 is cool, once you have a high enough skill in building mechs you can pretty much put any part you want into anywhere on the chasis. For example, you could weld a pair of giant arms onto a fighter jet, iirc. There's a similar mechanic for building human-sized robot companions. 2 was supposed to add some space elements, but it didn't go very far with it. 1 is still better imo, 2 I think doesn't even have any questline or much to do at all.

This isn't a huge criticism of the game, since I like it a fair bit, it's just that I fully agree with it not really being a roguelike in the way most people who post here think of roguelikes.

You unlock some new stuff by getting different endings and fulfilling some challenging conditions, so there's some replayability.

I heard it described as the boardgame Arkham Horror with Junji Ito skin and it kinda fits very well.

It's a good game, even in current state. The esthetic alone is dope as hell and worth the money.

Did not like it at all, I got it on a big sale and still refunded. Ultimately it's just very repetitive and boring - you'll be clicking on endless waves of trash mobs until you get to the one fight that might actually be interesting. Like someone said, progression is glacial, but the characters movement itself also feels sluggish. Aesthetics and storytelling are very cool, but that's all it has going for it imo.

Something weird happened in Demoncrawl when I got the Ectoplasm item. I died, turned into a ghost and got the death timer. But as I kept running into monsters, I would die again, and again, with the Ectoplasm activating, and the countdown would keep increasing. Dunno if that's the intended effect? And when I completed the map, on the next one the countdown was gone, so I was just an immortal ghost, kept clicking random cells and revealing monsters, but I wouldn't die. Finished the second to last quest this way.

e: Also if a cell has an aura I don't recognize, is there any way I can see what that aura does other than activating it? It shows nothing on mouseover/right click/etc

Overall I feel like this game is very heavily luck-based - not in the sense of having to guess, but more in the ludicrous swings in the power curve from items, luck with drops, etc. I just almost won Quest 1 on normal except I made it through the first 5 stages with literally only 1 gold and then had no items to deal with later stages. I'm still having fun with it and still find myself going back to it regularly.

For omens, there's various item that can deal with them, if you keep an eye out you could potentially find something good in a shop. there's an item that lets you sell at shops, you could get rid of an omen this way as well. There's an NPC that will remove your omens for money, and there's also another one that can trade one of your items for another one - if you're lucky he will exchange an omen for something useful. Items and skills that spawn NPCs can also be useful here.

When you mouseover on anything, you should get a scrolling tool bar at the bottom of the screen that should list all effects it has.

Yeah, played a bit more and it really owns. One thing that is loving me up a little bit is that your ship can wrap around the screen, but most enemies and projectiles don't, so it's a bit disorienting. But overall it's really a great game, I'm amazed they managed to squeeze so much juice out of a simple asteroids concept.

I also got Nightmare Reaper today, never heard of it before but looks like it just released 1.0 after a few years in developement, and it's pretty good as well. I don't know if it qualifies as roguelike exactly - it's a retro style shooter, but the levels are procedurally generated, there's metaprogression, weapons have levels and different modifiers and powers. There's a shitton of different weapons. But also when you die you just restart that level, you don't have to start over an entire run, and you don't loose any gold. So overall kind of a weird mashup of genres, but I dig it so far. The starting levels are a bit meh to be honest, some cramped sewer cave or something, but seems that later on the environments get more interesting.

There's a millions unlocks which I'm always game for, most of them are just opening up different options, but there's some that are also just straight upgrades. There's a ton of different weapons and gear that have entirely diferent skills and bonuses. It's also pretty hard, but I feel like with each run I come a little bit closer to vicory.

Pretty cool, woud recommend. Also one thing I realised way too late is that you can have a second weapon set that you can switch during combat completely free, so your melee guy can have a ranged backup weapon and vice versa.

Yeah, I also ended up getting it during the sales and honestly I'm completely in love. It's such a neat concept and gameplay loop. Managed to win in each of the 3 maps in a total of 5 attempts, now tackling acopalypse 1 in Lakeburg.

Before buying i was afraid of the grindyness, but that hasn't been a problem at all: I've never had the impression that I needed to grind for some unlock in order to continue. My only fear now is that the game could be getting easier (due to unlocks) faster than I can make it more difficult (due to unlocking acopalypse levels) - but I still have plenty of "oh, poo poo, I'm going to lose" moments and the game is by no means too easy.

Figuring out weapon combinations is indeed extremely important. Some weapons are good in almost all situations and really encourage you to take the specialised perk (like the pistol), some are the complete opposite and need a partner weapon (like the spear and the sword).

Got any tips? I'm on run 10 on the first map (Gildenberg), I can survive up until the last night but then I get quickly overrun, since on the night before I usually lose a good chunk of my buildings and defences. My dudes are never in danger, but I just can't seem to keep up with my damage output.

I also probably realized too late that consumables refill every night, so might be a good idea to outfit everyone with mana potions and some aoe scrolls.

Tips:
- Don't be afraid to use mana intensive spells and scrolls. If you took defence damage but still had mana at the end of the night then it's likely you didn't play optimally. Don't be afraid to spam triple strike, flamethrower, lightning strike. Mana is meant to be spent. An attack like triple strike doesn't need to hit 7 enemies to be worth it, if you kill 3 it can already be useful.

My problem is that I'm running out of mana, I'm abusing that lightining strike like crazy with +propagation bonuses, by the end of night usually all my guys are tapped out. So when I get later in the run I have trouble refilling even when using the freebie upgrade from the mana shrine

quote:

- Bowyer/Blacksmith/Magic shop are not very good. It's better to just upgrade your shop to get better items.

This one seems interesting, I started to notice this as well. It would be good if the item levels followed the shop level, but when you have to upgrade it separately on each building it's not really worth it as you say. I got roped into building those to get the tied upgrades, but I think it's a waste of gold that could go into town defences.

I was also thinking that mabye building walls on later nights is a waste of resources. When the waves get really large, they only stop the zombies for 1 turn anyway, so I might try to replace them with barricades that are 2x cheaper. Ballista also seems trash, a single extra shot a turn for 100 stone is pathetic.

I'm also seeing in the new dev notes that they're reworking production buildings to share upgrade levels and the shop to increase automatically which was probably my only gripe with the mechanics. Game good.

Speaking as someone who was unimpressed with the initial release, it's good. Metaprogression is imo fun now, there's two metaprogression "paths" - one tied to just killing large numbers of zombos, and the other to various achievements like deal x damage at once, reach x max health or mana or level etc.

There's a lot different weapons and so far they all seem pretty viable in the right build or gear combo.

Any general tips for the Last Spell?

My priorities usually go something like this:
- Get workers, smash ruins for gold for more housing & scavenger's huts.
- Get 1 mana pool & upgrade benediction to it to keep your mana hungriest guys topped up.
- Get 3 scavengers going early to maximize materials, add a gold mine or two if you can. Also buy some mana pots if any are around.
- Build the biggest walls you can & ballistas behind them
- get inn & max out the number of heroes

But it isn't working at all; I can get to the 4-3th last day in Lakeburg and get swarmed so goddamn hard it seems absurd to beat even with metaprogression (let alone without it). There's so many mobs that I can pump out almost solely skills that hit 6 enemies every turn, and even then I have 100+ running in after my walls are long gone.

I tend to prioritize ranged heroes from inns (melee ones feel like they require a lot of armor to be effective, while ranged just needs a bow). Last time I had 1 armored melee (spear), 1 caster (spamming the chain lightning-spell) and 4 bow guys.

Are ballistas & catapults (usually I go with just ballistas) a trap? Feels like their damage drops off by a lot, and you could get something like a second row of walls instead. I usually prioritize scavengers over gold mines so I can top up walls & ballistas, and gold mines sound like they take time before they've even paid their own construction cost back; I should prolly try the other way around.

I have not gotten any farther than you, but it does kinda seem like ballistas are a trap unless you can churn a shitton of them. Killing one mob per turn (or sometimes not even killing it) does not seem worth it. Over the entire night that's like what, 6-7 enemies dead? Which is equivalent to a single big attack. You can get a lot more value out of a single +1 ap accessory. So yeah, it seems like slowing enemies down is much more important. They will always stop at the nearest barricade, so even with the lovely cheap ones you can buy yourself an extra turn or two before the zombos overrun your city.

Traps might also be more worthwhile, if you place them within your walls you have a chance of again buying yourself some time once the mobs start breaching.

I'd say like 75% of metaprogression is sideways stuff, unlocking different weapon and armor types. Or unlocking stronger weapon versions, but those still need to be bought during a run. There's a few that unlocks new buildings which might be considered 'upgrades'. The straight powerup stuff is things like your dudes starting with a helmet, or starting with +1 gear, having one more perk option, or starting with slightly more mana (about one spell cast more) or having 5% more chance at a rare item. The most powerful upgrade would probably be your dudes starting with 1 additional action point.

The fact that I'm surrounded and my dudes can't support each other really sucks! The level ups also seem kinda iffy, where it's like, do 3% more propagation damage, which applies to like, one of my skills, or do 5% more minimum damage, or something. A lot of it is very underwhelming.

Runs also take a long rear end time too, so getting to that last night just seems like a drag, only to find out that I probably need more metaprogression or something? Am I playing this wrong somehow? I'm spamming my abilities pretty often when it's opportune to do so, but even then I just can't seem to kill things fast enough on that last night.

The metaprogression bonuses are kinda minor, with the exception of the one that gives you +1 action point. Also, if you haven't realized it yet, you can have two diferent loadouts equipped and switching between them is completely free, so you want to have weapons that complement each other. Stack perks and equipment that gives you bonus propagation bounces. Weapons and shields in your secondary slot still give you their bonuses.

I checked out Erannoth Chronicles - on the surface it looks like my kind of poo poo, 3500 cards, hundreds of character combos, mechanics out the rear end, etc. Unfortunately, it doesn't feel very good to play. There's just zero feedback to anything - the battle screen is just static images, card you play resolve instantly with very little indication of what happened, same for enemy actions. Barely any indication of who was hit and what effects applied. There are effect icons next to the characters, but mousing over that only gives you the keywords and their value, with zero explanation of what it means. To get to the information you need, you usually need to go two screens deep into the glossary. Also, what kind of deranged decision it was to have Alt-click display the full card info?

Another problem is that the cards are not distinct enough and it all kinda blends together into one big slurry. Oh, this one gives +1 Flowersniffing and -2 Ennui Resistance, but that other one has +2 Toenail Clipping but causes +1 Itchiness and I have no loving idea which one I need right now.

I love the variety and scope and theorycraft potential, but it's not fun at all, I just don't have the mental energy anymore to deal with a lovely UI :negative:

Yeah, I was on board for cronchy oldschool grog mechanics. And it's not even that the core gameplay is anything complicated - if you played any deckbuilder ever, you'll figure this one out even without the tutorial.
And it's also not like the dev doesn't know how to implement tooltips or a glossary or wiki, because those things are in the game. The problem is that the information is conveyed badly or is unnecesarily hiden away and it's a pain in the rear end to have a full picture of the game state at any given time
