poo poo pissing me off today: Bad SATA cables.

Some SATA cables that work fine on 3gbps motherboards will cause corruption and all sorts of funny behaviour when you try them on a mobo with 6gbps support. Turns out it's been bent and twisted a bit too much, and may be old enough to not support 6gbps in the first place :argh:

A thing to note here though;

It could seem that intel sata controllers deal with bad cables better than amd does. This system had a gigabyte 980 amd motherboard before, same components otherwise, and it acted strangely. BSODs and a bunch of other crashes that was very hard to pin down. Swapped in an intel motherboard with a q8400 cpu on it and all was well. I replaced the AMD motherboard with a newer one with a 990 chipset and lo and behold, straight up I/O errors. Yay.

Just got the call from the HR VP that they decided to discard me and "move forward." It frustrates me that these people I worked so hard for consider my quitting to be progress. I'm not surprised by the choice but I'm weary of having bad management rubbed in my face over and over, for years at a time.

I feel like I've had one shot to run a place and stay as long as I wanted (back when I was an I.T. Director) and I threw that away in the chaos after having cancer.

Now I feel like this was my last shot to make a decent salary and I should've hung onto it until they got rid of me because I'm not going to see it again. It's the only job in the last ten years where I made enough to save and stop worrying about spending a little now and then. Being disrespected, ignored, etc. I should've toughened up and absorbed it in the name of maintaining my employment.

I don't know where to go from here. At my age with my history it feels like everything that might be good is behind me and there's nowhere to go but down. I can't believe I threw that job away and made it easy for them.

Now we have a government who model themselves after Reagan/Thatcher/Rand and the oil sector is crashing and cutting costs everywhere, so everybody is screwed and I'm just saving up whatever I can of my relatively decent salary for a helpdesk monkey.

I don't see the problem with a setup like that as long as you use drives rated for server/raid use. But don't even consider using anything less than RAID6 for storage. Two parity drives decrease the risk of data loss by orders of magnitude compared to having one parity drive.

None of this negates the need of having proper backups though.

For my home poo poo I run 10x4TB WD Red drives in RAID6, with backups on an older 16x1.5TB RAID6 array (mostly kept offline/unplugged) and on glacier.
