If you play as someone else during that expansion fine but if it's supposed to be the bhaal spawn that is really dumb. It will be a few hours of content at most and they will charge 20 dollars because of course they will. There isn't a whole lot of story to tell in between those games or levels to do it with.

I don't know, there's quite a bit of space. The BG2 intro states that it's been months between the end of BG1 and Irenicus attacking you and kidnapping your party, so there's plenty of space for them to add a new, fairly sizeable expansion that takes you adventuring elsewhere in the Sword Coast.

Actually, porting the BG2 combat mechanics to Planescape would be a great way to enhance it, but probably won't happen because it's a lot of work. The combat in Planescape is garbage and could definitely do with being fixed.

Planescape is also the obvious candidate for a Story difficulty that sets all your stats to 18 or 25 to make the terrible combat more tolerable.

Yep, this is how I'd love to do alternative runs through the game. Good idea.

I can't imagine that Planescape wasn't the thing they had in mind when they added story mode to IWD, really. It's a ridiculously obvious change for a PS:T EE because everyone mentions how bad PS:T's combat is.

Lemon-Lime

Just use a save editor and set all your stats to 25 if you're going to min-max stats for dialogue purposes anyway. This will also make the combat way more tolerable.

If you're playing Arcanum you're also going to want Otto's All-In-One to rebalance tech/magic, otherwise magic is brokenly powerful and tech is utter garbage late-game.

Lemon-Lime

If you're playing PS:T for the dialogue, just cheat yourself to all-18s or all-25s.

The "canon" party of Charname, Imoen, Khalid, Jaheira, Minsc and Dynaheir is actually pretty good, and that's just picking up all the non-evil NPCs you can get with zero effort before Nashkel mines.

Also, the game designers expected you to explore literally everywhere. There are things hidden all over the place you wouldn't expect, like the ring of wizardry outside FAA and the ankheg plate buried on a farm. Another example would be the Tome of Leadership and Influence (gives a permanent +1 charisma) hidden on the gnoll stronghold map you JUST cleared.

These are pretty different since the Ring of Wizardry and Ankheg plate are items you could get early on by pixel-hunting (BG1's engine didn't have tab to highlight), whereas the Tome is just in an easily-accessible cave.

Somebody should kickstart an Engine Remake that keeps all of the original assets and rules and just makes things high-res/polishes it up.

Not really sure what you'd make high resolution - all of the Infinity Engine games have run at any resolution you want for practically a decade now. The sprite quality is decent (if anything, they're the weakest part of the games), the 3D effects for the spells haven't aged that badly, and the backgrounds are pretty good.

Honestly, I'd rather they just ditch the Infinity Engine entirely and go to a more modern engine while retaining the existing assets.

My Christmas holiday game is going to be Pillars of Eternity. As a long time Infinity Engine fan, what are some tips you guys might have for the combat or exploration or general 'this is different from Baldur's Gate functionality' advice?

There isn't much to say that's different for PoE, except pay close attention to the stats because they're totally different from D&D's in effect despite sharing the three physical/three mental thing (for example, Con is a bad stat for tanks in PoE). Every class is good, but you do get a Wizard, Fighter, Priest and Chanter NPC within the first three or four hours, so you may want to keep that in mind when making your char (there's no Rogue or Barbarian NPC in the main game, although there's one of each in the expansion which is meant to be played about half to two thirds of the way through the game), but you can get by just fine with multiples of the same class. I made a tank Fighter and just built the NPC Fighter as a dual-wielder, for example.

Have fun, it's probably the best game of 2015.

Lemon-Lime

Most of the stats are useful to everyone, but some stats are still more useful than others to specific classes, and you still want to aim for 18 in your primary stat/16 in your secondary, after cultural bonuses.

Did the EE fix the thing where enemies wouldn't attack summoned creatures if they didn't attack them? That was the old trick for killing Drizz't or the BG2 dragons, just surrounding them with summoned creatures so they couldn't move and repeatedly mashing the "cancel order" button so the summons wouldn't attack.
