I had a similar arc a few years later. Before my family got a PC my sister and I played a ton of PS1 Diablo and Mechwarrior 2 (totally fine) and Starcraft 64 (woof.)

We used to do splitscreen no rush Starcraft matches where we'd spend 20 minutes building carriers and battlecruisers and run them into each other. Battlenet without battlenet.

Incidentally, when is Chris going to do another song? It's been like... five years.

In the original thread Idle Thumbs had a two sentence description and one of them was like "Chris also sings." :v:

Reminds me of this. It's definitely a problem. I think Rockstar was smart to set GTA in fictional-but-obviously-X cities.

The unevenness might be related to time-issues. IIRC Alpha Protocol had development and publisher problems (obsidian.txt.)

I really like AP, but I still have problems with some of the characters and dialogue. I feel like the aggressive and suave-type characters and actions get the dickishness of James Bond/Jack Bauer, but not the humor or fun. With the exception of Stephen Heck, who is a treasure.

Edit: And the boss fights are really out-of-place. There's a lot of rough spots, but I still played it three times.

That's great. There have been some kind of bummer Idle Thumbs episodes in the last year where they don't have much to talk about. More guests please.

I actually wish they would bring back Chris Kohler, if he's interested. Hearing him on Retronauts reminded me that I really like him, but I tried listening to a couple episodes of the Wired games podcast, and there's just too much of him on there. Even when there's three people on the podcast, he seriously does like 90 percent of the talking.

I'm probably too late, but on the latest episode of Bonfireside, you said Manscorpion Tark was the first nonhuman NPC you could summon in the souls series. I'm honestly surprised nobody remembered summoning Sif for the Manus fight, even given that you had mentioned her earlier in the episode when comparing DS2 bosses to DS1 bosses.

Sif thinks he's people, at least. :woof:

The Sonic porn discussion on Thumbs two weeks ago completely annihilated me. That was some good business.

I'm using BeyondPod on android and have been rather unhappy with it.

Once every few months it will "forget" which episodes of a feed I've already listened to and mark the entire back history as unlistened. I'll only notice this when I queue up the a Bombcast / Idle Thumbs / whatever and discover it has actually downloaded episode 1.

Also, if the app goes too long without hitting play, it will spend approximately ten seconds to begin playing. I presume this is due to some sort of conflict with the way Android handles memory management, but it's so infuriating when I hit play on my car's stereo and don't have any visual feedback on why it will sometimes work and sometimes not.

I use Beyondpod too. I haven't had those problems, but sometimes it hangs in a weird way when I'm trying to update a feed. I have everything set to manual, though, so I might not notice if the feed management was acting wonky.

This isn't a specific criticism of any one podcast, but I feel like a lot of the games podcasts I listen to are in the same social media circles and play the same games, and even though I listen to a lot of gaming podcasts while at work, I still mostly get exposed to new games from the Steam thread here. Like, if a game like transistor comes out, I'm going to hear impressions of it on every podcast I listen to, but Divinity OC is the first Divinity game anyone has played, even though Divinity 2 and Divine Divinity are pretty respected RPGs and not that obscure.

My hope is at some point the internet economy will mature to the point where I can just pay monthly fees for the dozen or so sites I visit regularly. I feel guilty about using adblock for general browsing, but I can't deal with the crazy ad pop-ups and Javascript tricks a lot of these blog-type sites use.

I wanted to get hosting through Idle Thumbs once, but the referral code had changed in the couple weeks since they ran the ad, and I couldn't find the new one. I think the way Giant Bomb handles their podcast ads is the ideal, but updating two different feeds with two different versions of the podcast is a lot to ask from people with day jobs.

I wouldn't be able to tell WOFF and Abject Suffering were Skype shows if I didn't know if from you guys talking about it before. It's snappy and there's very little running over each other.

Retsutalk is a little rougher, for example, but it doesn't bother me that much. The recording quality of The Crate and Crowbar does bother me a little. There's a noticeable hiss, the audio clips occasionally, and sometimes it's hard for me to tell what someone's saying.

Half Life 2 also has a really atmospheric world and a lot of restraint about showing it to the player. There aren't a ton of journal entries, audio diaries and NPCs lying around to demystify everything for you, and you only see some of the cooler things in passing or for brief moments, like the humanoid slaves in the tower at the end.

Fair enough then, I did wonder why people regarded it so highly, and in fairness I only watched the first 3 or 4 episodes, just one of those that skipped me by.

I didn't make it more than two or three episodes in the first time I watched it either. The pacing of the pilot is kind of especially weird, and the fifteen minutes or so of people crying at the start is kind of baffling as an introduction to the cast. I can't explain it, but the second time I saw it the chintzey intro and weird synth soundtrack clicked for me and I was pretty much completely drawn in until I finished it.

I really liked the Heist missions from GTA V. It kind of reminds me of the nemesis system from Shadow of Mordor, in that it's the coolest thing about the game, and you can tell they knew it too, but they weren't quite confident enough to follow through with it and the other 90 percent of the game leans on genre tropes you've played a million times before. If they put more of those in, beefed up the crew management system and cut out a few hours of the point-to-point drive/kill/follow missions that haven't changed at all since GTA 3, it would have been really cool.

Did you get a chance to check out Watch Dogs? While the multiplayer stuff was mostly massively-unbalanced it added a really amazing level of stress to the game when you knew (or just suspected) that someone had invaded you game Dark Souls style and could be about to get a bunch of points for you not being able to find them - despite it having almost no negative repurcussions for being a losing invadee..

I still think the next GTA game would be better with slightly-random bad anthropomorphic animal puns interspersed with amazing guest star cameos, though.

Not yet. For some reason I was expecting it to have a lot more cyberpunk flavor, and I was a little sick of traditional open world games after playing GTA V and Saints Row IV (which I was expecting to be a regular open world game and turned out to be a crazy cyberpunk game, but also mostly GTA-like.)

I would like to see the GTA team try something crazy too, but the impression I got from Jacked (the book about them by the Masters of Doom guy) is the Houser Brothers are laser focused on turning gangster movies into video games, and that's about it. There's a pretty funny anecdote in there about Sam Houser pressing hard for explicit sex in GTA San Andreas, and being flabbergasted when he's told it would turn into a big problem for them. Here's the e-mail he sent to their director of operations:

Sam Houser posted:

[J]ennifer, how are we going to handle the approval of certain bits of content in sa [San Andreas], we are keen to include new functionality and interaction in line with the ‘vibe' of the game. to this end, in addition to the violence and bad language, we want to include sexual content, which I understand is questionable to certain people, but pretty natural (more than violence), when you think about it and consider the fact that the game is intended for adults. Here are some examples of content that will be displayed graphically:

blowjobs
full sex (multiple positions)
dildo sex (including being able to kills [sic] someone with a dildo)
whipping (being whipped)
masturbation (one of the characters is compulsive; this MUST be kept)

all of these items are displayed both through cutsecnes [sic] and in-game. I know this is a tricky area but I want to find a way for this work; the concept of a glorified shop (walmart) telling us what we can/can't put in our game is just unacceptable on so many levels. All of this material is perfectly reasonable for an adult (of course it is!), so we need to push to continue to have our medium accepted and respected as a mainstream entertainment platform, we have always been about pushing the boundaries; we cannot stop here. . . . how do we proceed with this? we really don't want to cut these areas. please advise.

Judging by the strip club stuff in GTA V, I imagine not a lot's changed over there.

The capra demon is pretty unique for souls bosses. There are a lot of bosses in Demon's and Dark 1 that sprint at you in the beginning, but not many where you walk through the fog door right into a life and death moment.

I was so glad to find the Bubsy 3D episode for Bonfireside Chat. I spent a lot of time as a kid playing games covered on that show, but Bubsy 3D stands out in my memory as by far the shittiest.

It's crazy that it was released contemporaneously with Mario 64. I don't think it's a great game, but when my sister and I loaded it up on Christmas morning, we probably played it for two or three hours before even entering the castle, just exploring the outside area and marveling at the 3D movement. I had the same experience a few years later with Everquest. The first time I connected and created a character I spent an entire evening just walking around one of the starting towns watching other players doing their business and thinking "this makes all other video games obsolete."

My memory of Hybrid Heaven is it had a deep, RPG wrestling combat system where you could level up moves and body parts and a ridiculous, dark, crazy story, but when I tried to play it again a couple years ago I couldn't even make it through the first real time section with the prologue character before giving up.
