Also apparently SF is breaking from the coordinated Bay Area health program and relaxing some indoor mask requirements starting next Friday:

lmao PG&E just sent me an email saying why my gas bill is triple what it was last year.

quote:

Natural gas prices have gone up significantly, not just within PG&E’s service area or California, but nationwide and globally. From November 2021 to January 2022, the costs have been 90% higher than last winter. The price our customers pay for natural gas is the same price we pay. This means we pass through the cost of these energy purchases directly to our customers and do not earn a profit.

Weird how they don't mention how they're also paying off lawsuits for murdering people as a reason.

My choice of xeriscaping my front yard in Roseville (Sac) 5 years ago with fruitless (mostly) olive trees, lavender, sage, rosemary, manzanita, agave, grasses, etc has paid off. It is way more maintenance than you'd think though but once established doesn't need much water in the summer.

Avoid Caribbean agave, it grows very fast and at year 7 throws up the stalk and throws off a million pups. Stick with the slow growing Blue agave. Grasses like the blue fescue look great half of the year but really really hate the scorching summer and turn brown and shrivel up. Don't bother with them unless they are in the shade.

I wish the arizona style small brown pebbles were available instead of the choices we get here in in mostly black/white/grey - and the decomposed granite stuff that does come in desert brown is great for around 3 years but then needs lots of maintenance to keep weeds controlled.

The key to keeping weeds controlled is a couple apps of Prodiamine pre-emergent herbicide per year. poo poo's like magic. My neighborhood is a kyllinga, crabgrass, and poa annua farm and I've done a pretty drat good job keeping that poo poo out of my lawn.

I do keep one of the Home Depot Roundup crabgrass killer post-emergent jugs on hand to kill the small amount that inevitably sprouts around the edges of my lawn by the sidewalk and driveway though.

My back yard has a 45 to 50-foot blue oak that shits acorns, leaves, and pollen poo poo 10 months of the year. It's gorgeous and keeps the back yard shaded during the summer, but is a pain in the rear end to clean up. My two green waste cans are constantly completely full between that and the 3 dumb loving cherry blossom trees in my front yard that smell like jizz a couple months a year.

What?! It's been 95-108 for like 2 months now in Roseville. I thought it might be finally cooling off until I saw the forecast for this weekend. 110 on Saturday, oof. I don't know if I've seen any rain besides a random 5-minute sprinkling once or twice.

It's definitely been a great summer for pool beers though.

And an hour later, scrapped that, and just moved her field practice 90 mins later to 8pm when it will only be 100'.

On Saturday night, the wind blew over a 30-foot tree in my front yard, crushed our a few panels of our 2-month old fence, and landed in my neighbor's pool. Spent all Sunday morning chainsawing it up and cleaning up the neighbor's pool. The root system was tangled with a couple trees next to it, so I have to spend $900 to have them taken down so they don't crush someone or a car next gust of wind. Good times.

We were in Tahoe last week for like our first family vacation in years and got snowed in for an extra day after the 2' of snow on Twin Bridges Wednesday night. We had to scramble to find a pet-friendly hotel since we had our lab. Got moved into our hotel and the power promptly went out for a few hours :v: We were able to make it out via 50 without issue around Friday at noon. No chain control, but lots of cars over the summit, as expected. We drive by that big fuckoff boulder that was in the westbound lane when we were going into Tahoe on Monday. Holy poo poo that thing was massive. It's a minor miracle that it didn't kill anyone and destroy the road.

Oh yeah, I took our older kids skiing at Heavenly on Tuesday. 1.5h wait for rentals. The whole Nevada side was closed due to a power outage, and the Gondola was closed. So we had to wait 2.5h in line for a shuttle over to the California Lodge. We were on the mountain 2 hours before they kicked us out and had to wait another 2h for the shuttle back to Heavenly village. Only 10 of like 47 lifts open and only 1/3 of the trails were open. Lift lines were massive and it felt like they didn't limit the amount of people on the mountain. My watch app said we were actively skiing for a whopping 55 minutes. $850 down the toilet. Heavenly is a cool place to ski, but that was by far the worst skiing experience I've ever had.
