In response to being passed over for the Senate seat, London Breed's strategy apparently is to whine: https://www.sfgate.com/politics/art...medium=referral

Webpage is ad heavy, so:

quote:

San Francisco Mayor London Breed does not approve of California Secretary of State Alex Padilla's appointment to the United States Senate seat currently held by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.

During a virtual press conference Tuesday a couple hours after Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the appointment, Breed called it an "unfortunate situation," hoping to see a Black woman appointed to replace Harris.

"The sad reality is [Harris] was the only African American woman in the Senate at this time, and when you think about the history of this country and the challenges that exist for African Americans especially ... this is a real blow to the African American community, to African American women, to women in general," Breed said. "I think it’s really challenging to put it in words."

Breed was apparently taken aback by the pick despite Padilla being the reported front-runner for quite some time.

"It was definitely a surprise and it's an unfortunate situation as we are trying to move this country forward in making sure that Black lives truly matter and that African Americans have a seat at the table, especially African American women," she said.

Breed's remarks are similar to those made by former S.F. Mayor Willie Brown, who had called for Newsom to appoint one of Reps. Barbara Lee or Karen Bass. Brown previously declared, "There's no way that Gavin Newsom should allow anyone other than a Black woman to fill the seat of Harris," and, "Racial minorities should know they should not try to fill each other's vacancies."

After Tuesday's announcement, both Lee and Bass were gracious and congratulated Padilla, who will become the state's first Latino senator.

"I congratulate Secretary of State @AlexPadilla4CA on his historic appointment to fill VP-elect @KamalaHarris’s seat in the United States Senate," Lee tweeted. "[Padilla] has a track record as a skilled legislator and a steadfast advocate for justice, and I believe he will be a powerful voice in the Senate for those who continue to be denied our country's promise of equality. I look forward to working with him on behalf of all Californians to address the economic and public health crises we are facing, and to create a brighter future for our state and for communities across the country."

"I want to congratulate Alex Padilla -- someone I've known dating back to when he served our city as the youngest-ever President of the Los Angeles City Council," wrote Bass. "... Today, our state gains yet another champion following a distinguished line of individuals who have shattered glass ceilings and hurdled obstacles in their way. After then-Senator Harris’s historic election in 2016 as the first woman of color to represent California, we now have another historic barrier shattered as Alex will be the first Latino to serve California in the United States Senate."

Newsom probably could have added a bit of goodwill from the electorate too if he followed his own COVID-19 guidelines.

Imagine how much better it would have been if California had a governor following the same social distancing and isolation rules as everyone. Could even do a new personal youtube video every day to speak to regular Joe Californians and record his slow descent into madness until the loneliness overtakes him completely.

Instead though we got the French Laundry thing.

My Youtube feed is infested with "Why I'm leaving California!" videos due to going down the financial Youtube rabbit hole. What's the coverage like in California over people moving out?

And are the people leaving more likely to be voting Red or Blue? Something tells me it's the former.

As a percentage of the population, the number of people leaving California for other states like Texas is negligible (though this isn't really here or there, see below) . As for voting preferences, it probably depends on why they're moving (job making them relocate vs. moving because they don't feel like paying income taxes).

The bigger question is how much this will end up impacting the economy because population growth is slowing, but I think the reason for it is pretty simple-- housing is expensive. Sure, eggs are a bit more expensive in California, and gas prices suck, but the absolutely gargantuan housing prices are the biggest problem. I don't know how it's really being covered in California though, but I can tell you that I hear about it plenty in Texas because Greg Abbott can't shut the gently caress up about it.

The reasons that these companies say they are moving though (horrible socialist California policies or whatever) are a complete joke though. Companies in developed social democracies do fine. It's just a race to the bottom and the country will ultimately be worse off for it, IMO.

What folks in other states don't seem to grasp when they talk about about 100,000 Californians (or whatever number) moving out of the state is that the population of California is 40 million. Not 11 million (Georgia), 8 million (Washington), 6 million (Colorado), 7.5 million (Arizona), 22 million (Florida), or even 29 million (Texas). Forty million.

I like that Laryy Flynt was listed as a Publisher.

Yeah, we didn't get the jungle primary until after Schwarzenegger was governor. Our current jungle primary system was the result of a compromise to get a single Republican state legislator on board with some budget bill, otherwise the Dems couldn't pass anything.

The Republican dude (Abel Maldonado) was super passionate about jungle primary systems apparently that that was his big requirement for the deal.

EDIT: To clarify, his requirement was that the state legislature submit it as a ballot proposition to be voted on.

Just because he's one of the less crazy Republicans now doesn't mean he is or ever was good policy-wise.

He also wanted to sell off certain state parks/lands for temporary fixes to the budget, iirc.

not sure why bizarro watt has a problem with this:

https://www.sacbee.com/news/california/article248775710.html

I've been unnecessarily flippant so far, but essentially I don't think there's adequate enough reason for instituting this ban other than "I don't like sport hunting"-- and the article you linked mentions that the hunting quota never comes close to being met anyway, unless there's a lot of poaching going on. So it's not a conservation issue.

That said, I'm not one of those that is decrying the loss of "hunter's rights" I see from conservative people I know. Hunters don't have rights, they have privileges, and this is one I don't see adequate enough justification for removing.

As others have stated, Arnold was pretty ho-hum overall, and the best that could be said about him was that there was a certain degree of sincerity to his approach of being a Republican governor, rather than purely cynical opportunism.

His fiscal policies were crap though, and at one point I think he talked publicly about selling off some state parks permanently as a fix to the budget woes of the time. He also tried to slash all state worker salaries to the federal minimum wage because a budget hadn't been passed as a way to pressure the legislature. John Chiang, the state controller at the time and in charge of the payments, told him to eat poo poo.

The best thing Arnold did was veto some random bill with a message that discreetly spelled out "gently caress YOU" to the state legislature. Or at least, you think it's cool until you find out he just did it as some petty move against a legislator that wouldn't let him into an event.
