Newsom probably could have added a bit of goodwill from the electorate too if he followed his own COVID-19 guidelines. Imagine how much better it would have been if California had a governor following the same social distancing and isolation rules as everyone. Could even do a new personal youtube video every day to speak to regular Joe Californians and record his slow descent into madness until the loneliness overtakes him completely. Instead though we got the French Laundry thing.

Eric Cantonese posted:My Youtube feed is infested with "Why I'm leaving California!" videos due to going down the financial Youtube rabbit hole. What's the coverage like in California over people moving out? As a percentage of the population, the number of people leaving California for other states like Texas is negligible (though this isn't really here or there, see below) . As for voting preferences, it probably depends on why they're moving (job making them relocate vs. moving because they don't feel like paying income taxes). The bigger question is how much this will end up impacting the economy because population growth is slowing, but I think the reason for it is pretty simple-- housing is expensive. Sure, eggs are a bit more expensive in California, and gas prices suck, but the absolutely gargantuan housing prices are the biggest problem. I don't know how it's really being covered in California though, but I can tell you that I hear about it plenty in Texas because Greg Abbott can't shut the gently caress up about it. The reasons that these companies say they are moving though (horrible socialist California policies or whatever) are a complete joke though. Companies in developed social democracies do fine. It's just a race to the bottom and the country will ultimately be worse off for it, IMO.

What folks in other states don't seem to grasp when they talk about about 100,000 Californians (or whatever number) moving out of the state is that the population of California is 40 million. Not 11 million (Georgia), 8 million (Washington), 6 million (Colorado), 7.5 million (Arizona), 22 million (Florida), or even 29 million (Texas). Forty million.

CopperHound posted:Okay, I looked up the top two primary act. It doesn't apply to governor. Yeah, we didn't get the jungle primary until after Schwarzenegger was governor. Our current jungle primary system was the result of a compromise to get a single Republican state legislator on board with some budget bill, otherwise the Dems couldn't pass anything. The Republican dude (Abel Maldonado) was super passionate about jungle primary systems apparently that that was his big requirement for the deal. EDIT: To clarify, his requirement was that the state legislature submit it as a ballot proposition to be voted on. Bizarro Watt fucked around with this message at 15:27 on Jan 27, 2021 |

Just because he's one of the less crazy Republicans now doesn't mean he is or ever was good policy-wise. He also wanted to sell off certain state parks/lands for temporary fixes to the budget, iirc.

https://www.sacbee.com/news/california/article248775710.html California would ban bear hunting under new legislation, even as wild population rebounds I guess this is what San Francisco Democrats like Wiener do instead of working on housing.

Hunting is actually good and there is no real scientific justification for hunting bears. It's dumb. But a good distraction.

Rah! posted:not sure why bizarro watt has a problem with this: I've been unnecessarily flippant so far, but essentially I don't think there's adequate enough reason for instituting this ban other than "I don't like sport hunting"-- and the article you linked mentions that the hunting quota never comes close to being met anyway, unless there's a lot of poaching going on. So it's not a conservation issue. That said, I'm not one of those that is decrying the loss of "hunter's rights" I see from conservative people I know. Hunters don't have rights, they have privileges, and this is one I don't see adequate enough justification for removing. As others have stated, Arnold was pretty ho-hum overall, and the best that could be said about him was that there was a certain degree of sincerity to his approach of being a Republican governor, rather than purely cynical opportunism. His fiscal policies were crap though, and at one point I think he talked publicly about selling off some state parks permanently as a fix to the budget woes of the time. He also tried to slash all state worker salaries to the federal minimum wage because a budget hadn't been passed as a way to pressure the legislature. John Chiang, the state controller at the time and in charge of the payments, told him to eat poo poo. The best thing Arnold did was veto some random bill with a message that discreetly spelled out "gently caress YOU" to the state legislature. Or at least, you think it's cool until you find out he just did it as some petty move against a legislator that wouldn't let him into an event.
