Some girl I only have high school friends in common with sent me a friend request this morning and I vaguely recognized her name, but went to take a look at her profile to see if it would jog my memory.

Huh, she sure takes a lot of bathroom selfies, mostly in the same outfit and with a video camera and WHAT?

"Hey babe take off your shirt and get your knife I wanna take a selfie"

She has kids and this weird dude comments on all her stuff talking about how hot she is.

The doctor smiled, realizing that he was a loving psychopath.

A woman goes to her doctor and expresses concern about being able to financially support two small children. Ideally she would have some time between births to assess her situation, but her doctor is more concerned with pushing his agenda than her and her family's well-being. She feels pressured to keep the child and ends up moving back in with her parents under the strain of extra childcare costs, losing her job, and the doctor makes six figures every year, cheerfully continuing to examine her annually while she silently wonders how things could have been different had she not voiced her concerns to him. The second child suffers from a considerable amount of emotional anguish because of the way his mother treats him differently than his older sister, but he does not understand why. Somehow, he will turn out reasonably well-adjusted, but countless children like him will not.

The rebuttal

1. Your posts drip with male privilege and you seem perfectly comfortable speaking for women so I didn't thnk it unreasonable to take your opinions to their logical conclusion. If I don't get to say "You feel like women owe you something" then you don't get to say "Women don't want this because they enjoy using their sexuality to manipulate men", because then both of us are making assumptions about the intentions of people we don't know. Deal?

2. Go outside, seriously. Look at literally any form of marketing and see that society uses an unrealistic standard of beauty in commercialism and storytelling - buying whatever product will impress women, the hero in the story being handed a one-dimensional female love interest basically as his reward for defeating the villain, etc. From all sides, women are assaulted with the message that if they're not sexually available for the whims and entertainment of men, they're useless. If a woman chooses not to play along with the social norms established by patriarchal society, say, if she wears no makeup, loose fitting clothing, and a frown ("veiling her sexuality" as you say, which is garbage), she's still pressured by society, complete strangers saying things like "You'd be prettier if you smiled. Why don't you put on a little eyeliner? Why would you leave the house wearing that old thing?" - all pointing to the expectation that the onus is on women to appeal to a world full of men they have no intention of interacting with.

3. You keep assigning this sexual intention to women's choices when there's literally no *inherent* sexuality about anything involved. What you might perceive as a dress designed to draw your attention is actually just a piece of cloth with no sleeves because it's summer and it's hot out. Maybe a woman feels artistic and wants to use her face as a canvas, exploring the interaction of color and shadow around her eyes without any intention of ensnaring a man with her wiles. The point is that you have no idea what she's trying to accomplish so you assume the answer that's most beneficial to you: that it's directly for the benefit of men.

4. Literally everything you've been saying answers your own question here. The fact that we're even talking about this answers your own question. This is a uniquely female problem at hand - the reason the video was even made in the first place is because there's an inordinate level of uninvited attention and criticism placed on how women look in public. If you wore shorts and a tank top outside and had to deal with a dozen guys hassling you as you walked from one place to another, that would seem insane, right? So why do we handwave away the issue when a woman stands up for herself and says that this behavior isn't okay? Why are her short sleeves more inherently sexual than yours?

5. You misread what I said so I'll rephrase for your benefit. Almost universally in human culture, the male element is seen as "standard" while the female element is labeled as "other" - man is the default and woman is some substandard imitation instead of being equal as a human being, therefore she has to work twice as hard to receive the same respect that a man would receive without question.

6. You are so close to seeing reason that it's heartbreaking. You can see how the patriarchal society oppresses men, too! Men who want to stay at home and take care of their kids are seen as failed and un-masculine. The assumption is that they can't hack it in the real world and have to hide out at home doing what's stereotypically a woman's work (work which should inherently be easier because society thinks women are inferior, and if you've ever taken care of children you know it is in no way easy work). Plus it's perceived as extra-emasculating because it means the man has to rely on his partner for financial security. Maybe part of the reason that men don't seem to have the option to "be a father" the same way that women have the option to "be a mother" (and they both absolutely do have those options) is because women are treated so unfairly in the professional world. If there were more opportunities and equality for women in the workplace, men could ignore whatever social hangups people place on being a stay-at-home dad and feel more comfortable making that choice for themselves.

Holy poo poo the girl who posted the article deleted the thread but the loving idiot messaged me:

quote:

Because Lily has closed the thread I will message you my response. The main issue with this conversation is that I have attempted to use reasons and evidence to make my arguments while you have relied on opinion and emotional appeals. Arguments are correct or incorrect based on the evidence supporting them. You can’t simply disagree, that is like disagreeing that 2+2=4. It does or it does not, there is no opinion. Arguments must be generally applicable to all industrialized men and women for them to be valid in this context. As soon as you bring you or me into the arguments personally, the argument is invalid. When you talk about my attention or my meaning, you are both attacking me personally and not making an argument. “Your posts drip with male privilege” this has no argumentative meaning and is only a personal attack on me. We can’t have a civil argument if you are attacking me personally. “You seem perfectly comfortable speaking for women so I didn't think it unreasonable to take your opinions to their logical conclusion.” If you recognize what I am saying as an opinion then you recognize that there is no argument present and therefor no need to evaluate or respond. "Women don't want this because they enjoy using their sexuality to manipulate men" is an argument. It is based on the evidence that women spend extensive time and money on enhancing their sexual appeal. Fashion, makeup, exotic hair, painted nails these are entire multibillion dollar industries dedicated to, and profiting from women’s desire to enhance their appeal. If the argument is flawed please explain how so.

How many logical fallacies are in this, jesus christ

More suicide talk. This is especially difficult for me because 1) I really love my dad and I always grew up thinking he was really good at what he did and 2) because I've wrestled with depression and suicidal thoughts before.

But then he posted a thing about Robin Williams ending it with "I'm still speechless at his choosing to leave his children in the lurch."

I actually agree with the sentiment... I happen to prefer chubby guys to skinny guys. HOWEVER, the guy in this cartoon is clearly obese. You can see by the size of his forehead that his body is wayyyy out of proportion.

If his forehead was bigger, I'd hit it.

He's fat.

Judging by the fact that his arms still kind of look like arms, he's probably a powerlifter.

Note, this and being fat are far from mutually exclusive.
