I'd imagine most skepticism actually comes from the fact that it's an Ubisoft open world game. That doesn't mean it's going to be terrible or anything, but it will be pretty surprising if it isn't a very slight reskinning of the concepts that are already in AC and Far Cry, complete with tailing missions, outposts, and a story that thinks too highly of itself.

Also, the intriguing premiere video slowly gave way to less interesting stuff like spider mechs and shooting dudes with guns. If it had been entirely about a relatively grounded version of Chicago with super deep interaction via hacking that would have been great. Realistically, you're not going to be walking around amazed at all the dirt you're pulling up on random people and using that information in inventive ways, but seeing all that stuff as randomized data that you plug into a handful of prescribed mechanics.

It could still be pretty fun though, in the same way that climbing and stabbing people is fun in AC, or hunting endangered animals to make a wallet is fun in Far Cry.

I found the last thread to be kinda funny to read through, considering how little gameplay we've seen. Especially after reading the prerelease threads for GTA5 and SR4.

Also, please replace the OP with all neoseeker posts from the last thread.

Honestly, I want all games to be awesome. I've just played enough titles from this studio tag team to know that ridiculous things might show up and be played straight. I'll be happy if it turns out to be truly different and interesting, but they have a formula and it's been working for them sales-wise.

You know no one was saying that. Sleeping Dogs was far from high art but it was pitch perfect. A nice balance of humor and drama that wasn't overwrought, giving you stuff to care about as you progressed through the game. The last few Saints Row stories had flaws but they also worked by virtue of being as absurd as the gameplay.

When people criticize Ubisoft's open world games (aside from Blood Dragon) it's because they're essentially Dan Brown or low end Michael Crichton in video game form. It's schlock that takes itself seriously and expects your mind to be blown.

The framing device in AC4 was playful and conceptually cool, but even that was squandered when it came time to have the player do something within it and progress the story. If Watch Dogs can do something equally ridiculous but pull it off that would be great.

While I found Sleeping dogs to be really fun, the story felt incredibly disjointed near the mid-end. I've got a feeling they were forced to cut out a lot of stuff.
I would also say it never really focused on being "funny". A lot of the open world activities also felt like an afterthought, and it felt kinda pointless trying to hunt them down after a while.
And don't get me started on SR4, it was one of my biggest disappointments that year.

What I'm trying to say is to each their own. Also, is it the same team that worked on the AC games that are working on this game?

Hard to say, though, since it's not out yet.

So what turned people against this game anyway? I remember a lot of people being really optimistic and excited about it, but the general mood seems to have deflated if not outright turned now.

Probably has to do with the lack of gameplay shown so far. Almost all of it has been shown by Ubisoft themselves, so people are skeptical and making assumptions.
Also some uPlay hate for good measure.

One small neat detail I've noticed while watching streams is that if you scan the people you see working, they usually have that activity as their occupation. Like, you scan someone painting a wall or washing a window, and they have "Occupation: Painter" and "Occupation: Window Cleaner".

I don't understand the point of the invading thing. Somebody pops into your game and "hacks your data"...so what? What's the penalty? The reward? Do they get your money? Is it possible to just pop into someone's game and gun them down instead of trying to hack them?

It sounds cool, I just don't see the point and haven't heard anyone talk about it.
I think there's some sort of scoreboard. You can earn or lose points based on if you manage to get away with a successful hack, and you also get some sort of MP exp for unique skills. I also think the amount of points gained or lost is based on the difference in online rank between the characters.

I'd guess that the multiplayer is done through Uplay, and they might have some sort of detection for using trainers(I wouldn't guarantee it, though.). I don't think the cracked versions are using Uplay.

Also, trainers are actually really easy to make for most games, I'm not surprised there's one out for this game already.

There was a LOT of civilians and although all it did was get on the cop's bad side it was nice to see there isn't limitations on that kind of stuff. He probably killed a good 60 people before he couldn't keep up with killing the callers.

Also in that stream the car he was on was on fire and he jumped out as used traffic light and about 4 cars drove into a massive explosion causing at least 6-8 cars explode and causing a massive pile up.

In short this looks like the most amazing rear end in a top hat simulator ever made. I can't wait to get a poo poo ton of grenades (please tell me you can get a poo poo ton of grenades) and just rain them down on car pile ups.

I can confirm that you can unlock the game now on Steam by using a VPN to connect to Australia. Plenty of people, myself included, have unlocked games on Steam with a VPN without getting banned or hacked or all our games removed. I used FlyVPN free trial to do it. Before connecting shut down Steam and anything you don't want going over the VPN and make sure you pre-load before connecting to the VPN. Go http://www.flyvpn.com/freetrial for the free trial login and installer. Once you run FlyVPN login with the first set of credentials, the second one does not have Australia as an option for the free trial.

Once you're connected start up Steam, go to your library, and hit play on Watch_Dogs. Once it starts decrypting your game you can disconnect from the VPN and continue complaining about video games in this thread. The VPN will install itself as a network connection, so go to Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections (I'm on Win 8 but it should be similar for 7) and delete the FlyVPN connection once you're done.

I'd just like to echo that this works like a charm. Thanks a bunch!

Played a couple of hours, reflections:

-Not done much story yet, but I can imagine it getting incredibly cheesy later on based on the early missions.
-Driving seems fine, however, some cars have vastly superior road grip to others.
-The Alone digital trip gets surprisingly difficult during the later stages.(Unlocked the cheesy Alone outfit, woo)
-You can choose between stealthing and rushing in guns blazing for most of the CtOS towers, which is neat. You can basically complete some of them without ever having to set foot inside the compund, just by chain-hacking various cameras/objects from the outside.
-Invading is tense as hell. I've done three successful invasions, one where the host ran past me twice while I was chilling next to a tree. There's already many enough people online that finding a target doesnt' take more than a minute or so.
-The Cash run minigame is some sort of lightweight parkour. I've only done the introductionary one, which was pretty easy, but there are scoreboards and medals for it.
-NPCs are actually quite reactive to what you do. I had a guy swear me out because I reversed into his car.

Really fun so far, and I've barely scracthed the surface.
