Hey Ma, who's that band I like? Oh yeah, Hall & Oates.
Our club is putting on a 40k GT next April- and you're invited! We don't have a proper webpage up yet, as we're still gauging interest and working with sponsors before we set a ticket price.

If you're FB inclined, the event is located here: The Flying Monkeys GT

I know it's a ways out - but with big cons like Adepticon and LVO filling in calendar slots so far out, we wanted to be sure we were visible.

It's less then 12 hours to drive too.

Being centrally located in Wichita, KS gives us a big pool from which to draw players. Also, relatively cheap airfare through our ridiculous little airport.

If you're within a 12 hour drive, it might be cheaper that route.

If there's enough interest in a Goon Meet for that weekend, we can make time Friday night concurrent with Beerhammer, or a Goon Only Beerhammer event. We can brainstorm something up.

I've put my Steel Legion tanks up on ebay for what is probably a completely unreasonable price- but Christmas is coming and the kid needs juice.

(I checked the first post and didn't see anything against auction posting, and figured some of you might want first crack at these since you'd been so kind to me when I painted them).

Anyways, it really hurts putting these up, but I've got no other choice. My Grey Knights and the Mystery Machine & General Lugft Knights are probably next. :smith:

I apologize as I haven't been keeping up with the thread (I'm currently in the middle of a long hiatus from the game, and enjoying it) - however our big GT is coming up in April, and wanted to share it in case any of you guys across the midwest would like to join us:

Hey Ma, who's that band I like? Oh yeah, Hall & Oates.
We're less than three weeks away from The Flying Monkeys GT in Wichita, KS. Slots are filling up, we have 49 slots filled, and I think they're only going to 60-something.

If you're interested in the event, get your tickets now, also the cheap hotel room block is almost full as well (they are not expanding it).

The prizes are ridiculous for a GT of this size, they got a TON of sponsorship. Hope to see you there. I'll definitely buy any goon their first beer for Friday Night's Beerhammer. I know some of you are already coming, PM me if you want to meet up. The Flying Monkeys are a really good club, and we're all really excited to welcome you guys to Wichita.

edit: this will be a Major ITC event, FWIW.

Ok, sorry to spam you guys again, last time for a while, I promise. But I just found out the value of our prize pool for the Flying Monkeys GT has reached in excess of $5000+ and we've surpassed 50 slots (making us an ITC Major) and only have 13 slots remaining.

So if you're free on April 15th-17th and want to make the trek to Wichita, KS - it's going to be a good time. There are also WarmaHordes, X-Wing, Malifaux, Blood Bowl, Beer Hammer and Imperial Knight Joust events.

With all the doomsaying in here, (again), the Flying Monkeys GT this weekend may be the last SANE event for a while. No moving terrain here!

If you're joining us this weekend please PM me so we can get together for a beer at some point or come say hi to me, I'll be the Flying Monkey with "Leonard" on the back of his shirt.

We have had some drops, so if you're looking to slide in at the last minute, there should be tickets still available for the event, as well as the day of. We also have X-Wing and other tournaments at the same event.

As an aside - at the last minute GW apparently became one of our official sponsors with some sort of fancy package, from one of our FLGS owners (also a sponsor) said "I confess to having inside knowledge on this and am pretty sure it's a one time kinda deal. Cool that the monkeys got it." - though it's entirely possible he's full of poo poo. :v:

My loss to the harlie guy was changed to a draw after he DQ'd himself. There were some cheating allegations (rerolling the pirate captain's 2+ invul). He didn't do it to me but he never got a chance too). I played 3 of my clubmates on the way up. My pulls after the harlies were battle company, battle company, crons, crons/triptide, cron superfriends. I super dig my list and even the swing piece (the prince) was money every single game. My club also took best team (WARHOGS 4 LYFE), 3 spots in the top 9, and some paint/sports along with best demons, crons, space marines, and deldar. I met Tuxedo Jack who is a very cool dude who got to play my roommate game one and my roommate was very flattered to have you say he was the best game of the weekend, because he is super fun to play. The drive back was brutal (12 hours, and we left after awards at like 8:30pm) but this was super worth it.

A+ would come conquer again.

It was great to meet you - you guys bailed pretty quickly after the event, I wanted to wish you a congratulations in person.

I nabbed four hobby awards for painting, modeling and scratch building - and I also got the "Most Interesting List" for weird army comp that I was shooting for, so I'm happy.

That game against your roommate was an excellent game - and I had a ton of fun meeting the guys from your club. You all came to play and it was awesome. Now that my 40k hiatus is over and I'm playing again, I plan on heading to Midwest Conquest in May if possible, and we're definitely going to Iron Halo in October. Let me know the next time you're heading south, we can definitely get some games in.

Do you think any of your guys would be interested in a club v club Apoc game? Maybe in a few months?

Uroboros posted:

Nice, cash prize seems odd as opposed to swag.

How many attendees?

I know the FM opted for cash over swag because we had a PILE of swag to give away, and we figured the top awards might as well be cash so people could pick their own prizes. Plus he got one of the very rare ACTUAL Games Workshop sponsorship (we got four of those patches, afaik the rarest swag available).

We had 58 players, and I think we ended with about 6-8 drops by Sunday. We had well over 150 attendees with the other games and spectators though.

Uroboros posted:

150 is rather impressive for your locale. Considering there was only about 180 in the GT at Adepticon which is in Chicago and the biggest US 40k event from what I understand.

Maybe I'm overestimating. We had 58 40k players, 10 staff, the local sponsors and their friends/customers, 15 for bloodbowl, 20ish for X-Wing, a handful just for the painting awards, 15ish for Warmahordes and the specialist games (a spectacular failure) overall, and then we had probably 10-15 passerby and wives and girlfriends.

So by "attendees" maybe we had closer to 100, but we had a lot of people through that room over the three days.

http://www.frontlinegaming.org/2016/04/19/whither-the-future-of-40k-a-suggestion-for-an-alternate-format/

Abusepuppy proposes an "Oldhammer Format" for competitive play, since apparently the new Angels of Death supplement and 30th anniversary marine are his tipping point.

Frontline Gaming posted:

Introducing the Oldhammer 40K Format

Armies in Oldhammer 40K may only contain a single detachment, which may not be a formation. (“Unique” detachments, such as a Great Waaagh or Nemesis Strike Force are still allowed.)
Armies may not contain any superheavy vehicles or gargantuan creatures.
No unit’s invulnerable save can be improved beyond a 3+.
The presumed point value is 1750, although obviously any number is possible.
Oldhammer 40K uses all of the ITC’s rules alterations, FAQs, etc (though some of them will not be relevant to it.)

edit: The article is a good read, and arguably a very important viewpoint to understand.

Let's look at this for example. Can an Ork army, even with a new and powerful codex, ever be expected to compete in a tournament setting where the 'Imperial faction' has and can do anything it wants with no real weaknesses to speak of simply because of the vast combinations it's capable of? The guy that won the Adepticon GT - he had what, 5 flavors of SM? Can Orks, Tyranids, Necrons, etc... ever be realistically expected to be able to combat that?

At the Flying Monkey GT this last weekend, there were only two Imperium armies in the top ten (9 and 10). Orks came in at #6.

Wait, are you anecdotally disputing me on this one? Look at the results across the board - Adepticon, LVO, and NOVA, and whatever else you want to look at.

Dominated by SM of any flavor, then Eldar, then a couple of Daemon, Necron, Tyranids and Tau. Necrons are a powerful army, but they aren't very flexible in comparison to Imperial or Eldar armies. Tyranids have one build and one build only that's seen over and over (flying Hive Tyrant with that FW shrouded guy and some spores for non-troop troops).

I'm saying not a lot of people brought Space Marines to this GT, and the meta was really weird. I'm saying that taking SM is not an auto-win.

Boon posted:

Oh no, I agree with you there.

What I'm trying to say is that the vast majority of support goes to the 'Imperial Faction'. It makes sense from a business perspective, but I think it's also what's killing the game. There really isn't any incentive to buy into a xenos army that isn;t Eldar or Tau because you're never going to get that level of support.

We're agreed.

I'm just pointing out that if Renegades and Skitari and Necrons and Daemons can all come in the top ten (all above Space Marines) then there's more parity than people are willing to admit. Those armies made heavy use of allies in some cases, and might be outliers in the overall meta, but it still happened - among some incredibly talented players - fwiw.
