Based on Witcher 2, the kingdoms being invaded are ruled by extremely stupid and selfish inbred psychopaths and when I found out the sorceresses were scheming to take over it was hard to hold it against them. Later when Letho revealed he was on a mission to destabilise the kingdoms to pave the way for the Empire invading well, maybe that would be a net positive for the area? So I can imagine them really having to play up the evil of the Imperial soldiers just to make it clear that they're not preferable to the likes of Henselt.

In Witcher 2 I remember some mention that Witchers are basically treated as freaks who nobody likes, which makes me wonder if the consequence-free sex thing is meant to actually be a sad note, since it's the closest thing to a human connection they can probably get.

I play Shepard celibate. What am I meant to gently caress, the genetically engineered clone or the psycho or the tentacle monster or the racist or the plague victim or the grieving husband or the guy who died in an atomic explosion in 2007? I went into Metal Gear Solid 5 already knowing the big twist at the end, so it was really cool to catch a few Bowie references early on and then realise the opening song was a COVER VERSION of a Bowie song

Brigador has a feature I didn't know I needed before now: a game speed control. I can slow it down to as low as 50% of its normal speed, and while this was intended to make controller play easier, it's meant that I can play the game as if it were a pure tactical game, taking the time to line up my shots and figure out where the nearest tanks are coming from and so on and so forth. In other words, it slows it down enough that I can process everything happening on screen very easily, and so I get to have more fun with it.

Mind you, it doesn't make the game a walk in the park - it still took me multiple tries to get through one of the later missions, but boy did I feel accomplished for both figuring it out and executing it. So many destroyed tanks! :toot:

One little thing I like in that game is that there's a vehicle called the Rope Kid, a shout out to Obsidian Entertainment's design director who posts online with that screen name. The vehicle is an antigravity bike, because rope kid likes bikes.

Anyway, I'm playing MGS5 and while I like to play non-lethal in the very few stealth games I've tried(I'm terrible at them), MGS5 is the first one I've played where knocked out people eventually wake up or can get woken up by other NPCs. This means you either have to extract them to your mother base or kill them to ensure you'll remain stealthy, and I frequently find myself deciding with a heavy heart that that Russian soldier needs his brains blown out, or that even though this guy told me where the Intel I need is i have to murder him. It's doing a great job of making me feel like a man who's becoming a monster.

There's understandable concerns that video game writers don't have the chops to really do justice to real world issues. That said, we won't see any improvement in that area without people trying it.

When everything ignores you, more or less, that is a stance, that whatever is going on doesn't really matter, no?

The other games in the series sound a lot simpler than Modern Warfare 3, the only one I've played, which was about a rogue faction of the Russian military inciting the third world war and in which you played as two British men and a Russian.

Fair enough. All I've really played on PS4 is Fallout 4, Doom, No Man's Sky and Metal Gear Solid 5, and seen some streams of Bloodborne. I assumed that since they're big tentpole games their loading times would be representative of games on the console in general, but I guess they're outliers.

Edit: Oh and Arkham City, but the PC version of that was legendarily bad so it stands to reason the console version would be kind of crappy too

Also a really fun Dragon's Dogma one is that there's a quest to fight a gryphon, climb a tower and do a bunch of stuff. The quest starts off with you fighting the gryphon and it runs away when its health gets low. If you're strong enough, usually on an NG+, you can actually kill the gryphon at this point and the quest just ends.

I saw one guy say the first time he fight the Griffin he grabbed onto it as it flew away and had enough stamina items to keep clinging on as it flew all the way back to its lair. Which is another badass way to do it.

I was initially skeptical of the way you can change classes any time, but I really like it- there's a lot of walking around, and you'll be fighting the same enemies a lot of times, so changing your class means changing the specifics of how you fight, which helps keep things fresh.

I started playing Bloodborne, and I've been running around the opening city level, then progressed into the Cathedral Ward, then went back into the city and things are a little bit different. Before the streets were lined with coffins, piles of suitcases, and abandoned baby strollers. Now, in addition to that, there's something that looks like boxes of fresh bones covered up with bloody cloth. I'm not sure if this is a change caused by progressing in the game to show that things are getting worse in the city as time goes by, or caused by the amount of insight I've got now, but it's really cool and makes me think back to Eternal Darkness- except, while that game made you see things that weren't "really" there, if this is caused by insight it means I'm seeing things that have been there the whole time, which is really cool and creepy.

(I've read some posts and watched some youtubes about Bloodborne so I know roughly what the plot is and what's in store, but it's still cool to see it in action)

This reminds me, the Star Wars Episode 3 video game tie-in had a level where you're Anakin fighting Obi-Wan at the end, and you can win and kill him. And then there's a cutscene where Anakin kills the Emperor as well and takes over the Empire.

Way more satisfying to take people on in hand-to-hand combat for bar disputes/drunkenness/name calling. Lotta games let you pull out your guns and vaporize people with the pull of the trigger if you voluntarily choose the combat option. But its fun to knock some dude on his rear end fair and square and end the conflict without painting taverns red.

In my experience this was something limited to certain scripted fights. At the end of the prologue when a bunch of guys jump you in the tavern, I specifically tried to fist fight them and wasn't able to- Geralt just pulled his sword out and wasted them. I looked on the wiki and didn't see any other outcome for that quest than "you kill them all and the landlady throws you out"
