I'd love to see him in a Republican primary, just to watch the not fringe candidates have to try and outwork him for the paranoid, conservative, end of days bloc. "That is an absolute lie. I have never implied that my administration would rule out the use of nuclear weapons against ISIL."

The woman who owns the house I'm renting is this super hippy Colorado type chick, and she had dudes come to install solar panels on the house this week. She was all excited it would be the first house in the area to have them, and thought it was really neat that it would save her 30 cents a month or w/e on energy with a simple thousand some dollar installation. I come home, and now evidently we have no power. Hopefully when these assholes wake me up at 8 in the morning again bashing the loving roof to pieces, they'll fix it.

Cheekio posted:If it wasn't for the slave trade, would there be pretty much any African Americans? Not anywhere near the amount there are now, but certainly some. It'd be more similar to Asian Americans, where the richer African families sent their kids to western schools and some stay. Of course a lot of Asian Americans are descendants of laborers from the 19th century, so their numbers are inflated by that. You'd also still have immigrants/refugees from Eritrea and the like coming in over the last half century or so.

The Interview probably isn't thread-worthy, but I thought this was interesting. There was a big showing in Seoul where a bunch of North Korean defectors and human rights activists got together and watched it. Seems the reviews were very positive all in all. Anyone seen it yet? http://blogs.wsj.com/korearealtime/2015/01/02/the-interview-gets-a-tepid-thumbs-up-at-seoul-screening/

Zeitgueist posted:Yeah it was kinda dumb in any real political sense but vaguely funny. I get making a big mockery of the regime, but you'd think a movie that was intended to get into North Korea and have an influence there wouldn't be as much based in dick jokes, and would be well-researched and pointed. It doesn't sound like the kind of movie that makes you think and leads into a positive perspective, that North Koreans could really get behind.

SedanChair posted:It's just another Seth Rogan movie, any high-flown idea is bullshit. It was greenlit because Sony knows people will laff at funny Asian accents. Did you read the article I posted? Defectors love it, and it's going to be balloon dropped on North Korea by defectors, alongside being smuggled in through Chinese routes. People were personally thanking Sony for making it.

SedanChair posted:You're tripping I was arguing with the second part of your post. You'd think if it was stupid and racist more Koreans would be calling it stupid and racist and not largely applauding it. Absurd Alhazred posted:Just because defectors might use it doesn't mean that Seth Rogan et al. had any higher purpose they were taking seriously when making it. East Germans found Pink Floyd's playing The Wall by the Berlin Wall inspiring, that doesn't mean that was the goal in writing it. That's likely, but at the same time, it was pretty clear that any high budget Western film like this was going to make it into the Koreas, regardless. Just look at "You Don't Mess With the Zohan." I guess they should have done a better job taking that into context as they were making the film, as it shouldn't have come as any surprise that it was going to be widespread in the region.

SedanChair posted:You're arguing with my assertion that Sony greenlit the picture because cheap laughs get money? What the gently caress do you think they made it for, a reason other than money? Sure they made it for money, but your implication was that they made it by being racist and stereotypical towards North Koreans. It's clearly not the case. quote:Where is this motherfucking applause? It sure as gently caress wasn't in the article you just posted. Did you try reading it without an agenda? I find that helps. quote:Many were watching the Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy for at least the second time, and the laugh lines generally hit the mark with the audience. But most people in the room were watching it with an eye to how it might be received in North Korea. Absurd Alhazred posted:I don't quite understand the comparison with "You Don't Mess with the Zohan". And I really don't understand why you were expecting optimized propaganda towards North Koreans from people writing low-brow humor who expect to mostly make their money off of an American audience. Because it was pretty popular among Palestinians and Israeli's. And I wasn't expecting "optimized propaganda." Just accuracy and a good overall message. Sounds like the latter was achieved, but not the former. R. Israeli's got a kick out of him using hummus for everything. quote:Why? The target audience was mostly Americans. Why bother with accuracy when dick jokes are easier and likelier to be received well by the target demographic for a Franco-Rogan joint? "Expecting" was a bad way to phrase it, but it would've been nice if they did.
