the noise thing is super handy, melatonin and a soundscape worked for me but also because I started using a fitness band that tracked sleep so I could find when I really slept poorly and also wake at a more natural time. normally sounds aren't the interrupter for me, but I can see how that'd be handy to have metrics on

if its decoding by video card, was there an automatic driver update recently? if not, maybe a busted software codec is the cause?

in the mean time you could try something that stops autoplaying videos to keep it stable

in a more serious response: if they have ios devices, you could use something like air video to transcode and also download various quality versions, though the clients are only ios and apple tv. its a few bucks but pretty painless and the servers can run on macos and windows and multiple machines so you can customize sources and tweak settings

yeah, the cheap ones are potentially fun little linux laptops but they always have a major deficit like a bad cpu, or crap screen, or terrible case design

chromebooks are either you are buying a $300 shitbox that you get what you pay for or you pay out for like a $900 google pixelbook at which point get something that is more than a web browser

i got a woot refurb for $130 and its been a fun tinker box but yeah its not winning awards. the chromebook 3 is basically a normal samsung laptop but fatter and with google logos. for the price it was fine to dip a toe, but its certainly not more than a linux browser even refitted with a full distro

its one of those moments i wish i found an old macbook and swapped the os instead just because heck they both weigh about the same but it was nice way to get a cheap laptop with 12 hour battery life while my mba 2012 deprecates gracefully into a desktop

yeah I used that to make all the nest poo poo talk to Apple and it's painless now, the most elaborate step is making a dev account to fake the api keys for the app

theres even a package tutorial to turn a raspi camera into a homekit camera which is bonkers (microcenter had pi day zero w boards for $3.14 so now I have a spare), but maybe ill try the waze camera stuff instead for a fun secondary security system camera

I'll second trackballs. I switched years back and once you find the right one for you it's amazing. I'd personally avoid thumb ball mice, but that's because they seem to just shift the strain to my thumb. there is on reddit (sadly) a very active trackball community with recommendations

I'm personally a fan of, of course, a discontinued model by logitech and my trackball left click is going, so I'm now going to have to start replacing parts

the starter logitech trackman marble is perpetually available, ambidextrous, and cheap so that's a safe starter if you don't feel like doing research into types and options

so it looks like my old amd hd 6970 blew a temp sensor and is stuck at a turbine speed so i need a new card but… is this right? is the market really just nvidia cards with minor bumps from 2016?

i was eyeing a 1070/1070 ti but this stupid world is full of bitcoiners and they cost lots so i want to know its a reasonable thing to buy. the ti is a few bucks more at a lot of stores, so im thinking just go for it but the last time i cared about gpus was 2012 and it feels like i time warped to some bonkers future

yeah pretty much. supposedly 11-series are supposed to be out this summer some time

from my brief glances they sound expense for the first release (all high end cards) but cheaper than the high end cards theyd replace, if mining wasnt so popular. i have this feeling that new cards will cause a sweep of current stock due to price disparity, just pushing the market base further from msrp for affordable options

theyll probably announce a new line next week or something frustrating, but the wait and see approach is a perpetual waiting game for tech :sigh:
