The Amazon Fire earbuds definitely work with both my Nexus 4 and Nexus 5, volume controls and all. I've been using them as my backup headphones for when my bluetooth headset is out of juice, and it's nice that I don't worry about earbud tips when I roughly stuff them in a pocket. The magnetic buds are a nice feature, which tends to keep the cord from getting tangled up, and also means that I can use just one of the earbuds without having the other one flopping around loose though it probably does look a bit weird to have the other earbud clamped onto my ear. The back of the left bud is convex and the right one is concave, and that makes it pretty easy to figure out which one is which without looking at them. But yeah, as mentioned upthread, you really have to make sure that the earbuds advertise themselves as android-compatible if they have a volume control. Apple's volume-button system is proprietary, so if a headset says its volume controls will work with the iPhone/iPod, they almost certainly won't work with Android.

So I upgraded to Marshmallow on my refurbished Nexus 5 last night. And then, since I figured I might as well see this Doze thing, I left my phone unplugged from 7PM until about 5AM, when I woke up. I did a bit of light browsing with it during that time, but mostly left it on my desk, where it remained connected to wiifi. Checked the Battery stats this morning. That's kind of insane. I certainly don't /expect/ it to fulfill that 21-hour promise, especially since I have to take it to work and everything, but I've rarely seen my Nexus 5 promise a third of that much battery life when full...much less when at 67%.

So, picked up a 6P two weeks ago, as an upgrade from my Nexus 5. Wireless charging on the Nexus 5 was an excellent feature. Many a night when I came home exhausted, I'd just slap the thing onto my Tylt Vu charger, secure in the knowledge that it would be fully charged when I woke in the morning, no dexterity required. I don't miss it on the 6P. Battery life, quick-charging, and Doze means that my typical regimen is, instead, to quickcharge the phone for about an hour at the late night if I think I might want to, and leave the phone unplugged on the bedside all night, secure in the knowledge that it'll be ready to take on the day the next morning, and can top it up to full if I feel like it in about 15 minutes. At this point, I'm pretty much used to the size. It won't sit in my shirt pockets without sticking out, which is a bit of an annoyance, but I'll deal with that.

So I wound up comparing my Nexus 5's ringtones to my 6P. I'd been using Rhea as the notification ringtone on the Nexus 5, and when I upgraded to the 6P, the settings made Rhea the notification sound on the 6P... which is a different, more percussive sound. Investigating further, I found that all the stock alarms, ringtones, and notification sounds, despite having the same names on the N5 and the N6P, are all different. Has a reason ever been stated for this? Comparing my N4 and the N5, the stock sounds seem pretty much the same. Is it an LG/Huawei thing? Brief investigations seem to show the same sounds as the N5 on the Motorola N6. Don't have an N5X to check there. I've wound up downloading a set of the stock N5 sounds and am in the midst of changing their ID3 Tag data so they have distinctive names in the appropriate chooser dialogs.

Got my Nexus Live Case. It's okay. It's a bit slippery. The NFC button is ridiculously hard to press, so after about a day, I just disabled it entirely. Also wound up submitting the image three times and talking to a customer service rep before the content filter let it through. Overall, though I like the way it turned out. Something I noticed over the past couple days, with respect to Screen Pinning: On both of my phones that I upgraded to Oreo (Pixel XL and Nexus 6P), both had the "Ask for unlock pattern before unpinning" option set from when I first set up Screen Pinning on them. Both blithely let me unpin screens without putting in my passcode, until I disabled and re-enabled screen pinning. Has anyone else noticed that happening with Screen Pinning on Oreo?

I don't pay with my phone and... Any other use? I'm curious since when I've tried NFC for data sharing between my N7 2013 and one of my phones, it never worked. I'm sure that I'm doing something wrong but I can't just get what it is. For awhile, I was kind of into using NFC with the App Trigger to do some automation. My earliest use of NFC was that I had an NFC tag in my car mount, and I'd use that to flip my phone into car mode when I stuck it in the mount. When I first started using two-factor authentication,, I had an NFC tag that I stuck to my desk at work and at home, that would launch Google Authenticator. When I went from my Nexus 5 to my Nexus 6P, I did use the NFC transfer to transfer the data over, but I don't recall it going a smoothly as it went with the USB OTG adapter that I used to go from the 6P to the Pixel XL. When I started using multiple bluetooth headsets and speakers, I put a bluetooth tag on my keychain that would cause my phone to disconnect from all bluetooth devices it was currently connected to, so it was free to hook up to the one in front of me. I also have two pairs of Bluetooth headphones and one speaker with a built-in NFC tag, which made the initial pairing simpler. But outside of that, I haven't actually used my phone's NFC capabilities in a year or so (Since being forced to upgrade my Debit card kicked me out of the grandfathered Banccorp-mediated Android Pay integration), and none of my phones currently have the Trigger app installed.

Also, if you're using a wired headset, you know immediately when you've left your phone in a dressing room accidentally, because you're not hearing your podcasts anymore. If you have more than one wired headset, you generally know which one is actually connected to your phone, and the answer is never "Two right now, because you forgot to turn the other one off and you just got back into its range" I absolutely prefer the freedom that my bluetooth headsets have given me, and my Pixel 3XL is better at dealing with multiple headsets than my previous phones (it only starts to get choppy audio if there are three headsets connected or more), but there are a lot of little annoyances that I've worked around, one way or another. I'd have preferred having a headphone jack, but it was in no way a dealbreaker for me, as I'd been primarily using bluetooth headsets for three years at that point.
