Q: Should I get a New3DSXL?
A: YES!

Welcome to the New (New) Nintendo 3DS (N3DS) thread for all manner and revision of 3 and 2 DSs. READ THIS FIRST

:siren::siren::siren::siren::siren:YES, YOU NEED TO DO A SYSTEM TRANSFER TO USE YOUR NINTENDO NETWORK ID ON A DIFFERENT 3DS (OR DSI) THAN YOU CURRENTLY HAVE, SO DONT loving ASK. Here is a youtube about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y88G3tp_f88:siren::siren::siren::siren::siren:

:siren:ALSO, if the backlight or brightness on your screen is going up and down, bright and dim like crazy, go to the home menu settings (top left on home menu, not the actual settings app) and turn off automatic screen brightness. That is the 3DS trying to compensate for what it sees as varying levels of light in the room.:siren:

Nintendo Network ID (NNID) stuff related to the system transfer
Your NNID is tied to the hardware and simply logging in with your NNID on the new system will not allow you access to your downloadable content. If you wipe your old 3DS (or it dies or something) you will have to call nintendo support to have them manually migrate your account. You will need to do a system transfer to go DSi->3ds, or 3ds->3dsXL or anything to New 3DS. You can only do one system transfer every 7 days.

What is the Nintendo 3DS?
The Nintendo 3DS is the successor to the wildly popular DS line of handheld gaming consoles. The 3DS continues the clamshell, two screen formfactor of the DS, but adds Autostereoscopy to give the user a glasses-less 3D viewing experience. The 3DS's main (and only) competitor is the Playstation Vita.

There are officially 5 revisions of the 3DS model: Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, Nintendo 2DS (no 3D screens or clamshell), New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL. This thread will primarily deal with the 3DS models, as the 2DS models are compatible with all 3DS games and are shameful consoles that should never be spoken of.

New Nintendo 3DS Stuff
You heard right, there is a New Nintendo 3DS, and in the fine Nintendo naming tradition of "lets pick lovely confusing names for new hardware" (looking at you, Wii U), it is literally named the New Nintendo 3DS.

Everywhere except for USA gets their choice of a non-XL New 3DS and an XL New 3DS, the US gets only the XL New 3DS because we are all fat people who have perfectly sized 3DS XL baskets on the front of our rascal scooters, or because Walmart sucks and bitches to Nintendo about multiple SKU's, believe whatever you want.

The N3DSXL's do not have swappable faceplates, I know this angers everyone who looks at their 3DS more than they play it, I am sorry.

The New Nintendo 3DS has a plethora of upgrades over the Old Nintendo 3DS:
  • Face tracking 3D: The N3DS uses the front camera and an infrared light to track your face while you use it, even in the dark! It watches your eyes and mouth, like all electronics from Japan, and uses the information it gleans to adjust the screens 3D effect to your current position. No more holding your 3DS in the sweetspot for the 3D effect and never moving. You can now move (mostly) to your hearts content, and the screen will track along with you, never breaking the 3D effect. Even if it loses track of your face, it will quickly find it and snap back. This is confirmed by multiple reviewers, goons, and my own experience, to work awesomely, and is a serious quality of life improvement over the normal 3DS. I and many others now keep the 3D on full-time because of how rock solid the lock-on is.

  • New Controls: The N3DS now includes two more shoulder buttons labeled ZR and ZL, mimicking the circle pad pro. It also includes a second circle pad on the right side in the form of a nub joystick (think older thinkpad laptops). Reports say that the feel is (obviously) not as tactile as the left circle pad, but it works well. The new shoulder buttons are, well, new shoulder buttons.

  • Formfactor changes: The N3DS changes a bit in the form of a cartridge slot on the front of the machine rather than the back, the headphone jack is still in the front, but is now centered on the machine. The stylus also now pops out of the front. The volume slider is now mounted on the screen opposite the 3D slider. Also better speakers(!), I know, right? You wouldnt think they could get any worse, so they almost HAD to get better.

  • Built-in amiibo support: You can now stick your anime dolls on the N3DS and it will unlock anime options in games that support it (PS VITA owners take note). The bigger news here is that the N3DS supports Near Field Communication (NFC) now, which will probably also get used for non-amiibo stuff in the future.

  • Better CPU: The N3DS has added CPU and GPU cores, to increase the computing power available to games that support it. Existing games will not run any faster or better due to only being programmed for one core. The CPU is still clocked at the same speed, MHZ-wise. So far only the Retro City Rampage dev has gone back and updated the game to take advantage of the extra cores in the CPU and GPU to upgrade the visuals and ensure 60FPS everywhere. Nintendo has announced Xenoblade chronicles for the N3DS that will support features unique to only the N3DS, and will not run on the old 3DS's. The extra cores come in handy in the form of:

  • NON lovely WEB-BROWSING: This is bigger than you might think at first. For starters, the new browser is HTML 5 compliant. This means a couple things. Modern web technologies actually work on the browser. You can use Plex! You can view youtube videos (IN 3D!!) through the browser. It actually recognizes 3D web video, and gives you options to do side-by-side (SBS) 3D, top/bottom, and red/blue 3D. Whole universes of 3D porn possibilities have been opened with this new browser.

For a couple good examples, view these in your 3DS browser:

Tutorial on getting 3D video working: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnB4Tp2GGpA

VIRTUAL BOY ON 3DS FINALLY WE CAN VIEW VIRTUAL BOY LETS PLAYS LIKE GOD INTENDED: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0WrHCVKVRs

    Minions!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GBzLvTwfw4

Hell, there are even full documentaries in 3D on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyPLTtj-cxg

So yeah, the browser is a big deal this time around. Plus its actually fast this time around!!!

  • PC File sharing: You can now access your N3DS's SD card over wifi on your PC. http://www.nintendo.com.au/new-nintendo-3ds/support/microsd-management/

  • Faster/Better Everything: The upgrade means faster wifi speeds, faster eshop speeds, faster in and out of game transitions (miiverse, etc), faster game loading, faster downloads.

Also the cameras are better all around, better color, better in low light, better white balance. Still not high resolution, but they do the job for taking 3d images and video.

So yeah, its better.

Other things
  • The N3DS now takes a microSD card, not the full-size one of the previous 3DS's
  • The N3DS stores the microSD under the back battery plate, which is held in by screws, tiny Philips #0 screws, or JIS#1, which you need a special small screwdriver to unscrew. You also need to practice unscrewing these screws well ahead of time, as well as finding a screw removing dojo with a philips sensei who can teach you how to do this. The OG 3DS takes Philips #00 screws and is basically expert mode. Buy yourself a tool set and become a real manchild: https://www.ifixit.com/Store/Tools/54-Bit-Driver-Kit/IF145-022-1
  • The N3DS does not come with a charger (!) this is either some e-waste thing, or possibly Nintendo Is loving Us Again™, choose your own adventure on that one. Chargers from the DSi onward will charge the N3DS.
  • DO A loving SYSTEM TRANSFER

OK, so you're sold on the 3DS, what about the games? Maybe you heard it had a lovely launch title lineup (it did), maybe you heard its all anime games (thats the Vita), either way, the 3DS has a solid library of awesome games, and anyone can find something they like.

eShop
The eShop is Nintendos online marketplace where you can download demos, virtual console games and full games. It has its problems (no shopping cart, no background downloads), but its Better Than Nothing™, which is really all you can hope for when it comes to Nintendo and the internet. The eShop ensures that you get to encounter the "Handheld Gamers Dillema: Carts or Digital". Look within your own heart for the answer to that one.

Virtual Console
Virtual Console games are games from older Nintendo systems either ported or emulated to run on modern hardware. This started with the Wii and continues to all modern Nintendo consoles. Nintendo really takes their time with these, and ensures that they are 100% accurately reproducing the experience of the original console. They are all very good ports.

Full NA list is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Virtual_Console_games_for_Nintendo_3DS_%28North_America%29
PAL list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Virtual_Console_games_for_Nintendo_3DS_%28PAL_region%29

SEGA 3D Classics
SEGA, specifically M2, have converted classic SEGA arcade and console games to the 3DS, with stunning effect. All of the converted games take great advantage of the 3D screen, and are a sight to behold and play. Sega seems to be on a "if they sell" release schedule, so BUY THESE loving GAMES!

The list of Sega 3D classics so far is:

3D Space Harrier
3D Super Hang-On
3D Altered Beast
3D Sonic the Hedgehog
3D Ecco the Dolphin
3D Galaxy Force II
3D Shinobi III
3D Streets of Rage
3D After Burner II
3D Fantasy Zone
3D Out Run
3D Fantasy Zone II
3D Thunder Blade

Sega also posts exhaustive blog interviews with the devs on how they converted these games to run in 3d. Clearly a ton of love and care is going into these games. BUY THESE loving GAMES!! if you'd like to see more released.

Blog: http://blogs.sega.com/category/sega-3d-classics/

OK, on to actual games. As always, metacritic can give you an idea of whats hot for the 3DS, as can the V's Recommended List, but I hope to get some decent goon reviews up for our favorites.

Super Mario 3D Land
A 3D platformer that winds up being a bit of a cross between Super Mario World for the SNES and Mario 64, so how could you go wrong, really? The game takes the level design of Super Mario World, and moves it into a 3D environment, a'la Mario 64. Universally praised and loved here at SA and by most any other site, SM3DL is a challenging platform game that both shows off and benefits from the 3D screen. The game sports two different 3D modes, one that makes the graphics pop out, and one that gives them more depth.

Huge amounts of content, secrets, a ton of levels and gameplay (more than you think at first, trust me), this is a must have if you have ever enjoyed playing a Mario game.

Not to be confused with New Super Mario Bros. 2, which is a 2D platformer with some 3D effects. Still a good game, especially if you are a fan of the NSMB series, but not the same game as 3D Land.

Mario Golf: World Tour
Ah Mario Golf... The ultimate super-chill golf game to get insanely crazy over and obsessed with. This one is near and dear to my heart, as I spent hundreds of hours with the N64 version. Mario Golf as you know and love it. An easily accessible golf game that is also VERY nuanced and challenging. Probably the best golf game out there on any platform.

Mario Golf has a staggering amount of content, hundreds of hours of single player gameplay, an online multiplayer mode, DLC that nets you a bunch of complete 18 hole courses and challenges (some from the N64 version ). Nintendo also runs regular online tournaments that you can enter to compete against others from around the world for prizes.

If you are at all a fan of golf, golf video games of any kind, sports video games, or Mario Golf, GET THIS.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
LOZ:OOT needs no introduction. Its a legendary game, considered by many to be one of if not THE best game ever made. This is a port of the N64 version, with updated graphics, textures and of course, 3D. Considered by many (most?) to be THE DEFINITIVE version of OOT, the beautiful graphical upgrades, carefully designed 3D and quality of life improvements (better aiming, etc) make this the best version of an already amazing, classic game.

I dont need to say much about the game, its the same core game as it was on the N64, with the addition of the Master Quest from the GameCube, you know what you're getting into here. If you like OOT, play this, you'll be blown away by how gorgeous it is, and it will truly live up to your rose colored memories of it (we all have them), if you've never played OOT, play this version, its the best one yet, and will give you the maximum amount of enjoyment and graphical fidelity without some of the annoyances of previous versions.

Mario Kart 7
MARIO KART! Anyone reading this probably knows if they like Mario Kart or not, it has been on every Nintendo Console since the SNES (minus the Virtual Boy *sad trombone*). Mario Kart on the 3DS sees the full on 3D visuals treatment, online play that actually works, a long single player campaign, a bunch of unlockable karts and kart parts (over 1000 combinations of karts can be made to keep online play varied) and that core, fun Mario Kart gameplay we all know and love.

Fire Emblem: Awakening

A major goon favorite here, FE:A is a SRPG where you move characters across a grid map like a game of chess and follows the story of Chrom, a prince of Ylisse who recruited recently Robin, a mysterious tactician with no memories and also a fully customizable character to represent the player, into his army called the Shepherds to defend themselves against friction from a neighboring country and another group of zombie soldiers known as the Risen. This one is a treat for both new and old Fire Emblem fans, new ones can easily jump into this title as it is the most newcomer friendly of the series, even featuring a "casual mode" to turn off the series trademark permadeath where units are lost for good if they die on the battlefield.

The gameplay is addictive, the game itself is highly replayable thanks to the support system and the ability to create multiple different pairings across your army, the CGi cutscenes are gorgeous, the OST is great, and it's all fast and slick thanks to the fast menus and the ability to speed up battle rather simply.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf

The newest addition to the Animal Crossing series, New Leaf is still the same old chill game with a few great additions. First off, you become Mayor of your town, with the adorable Isabelle as your assistant with the ability to issue town ordinances to make stores open earlier or stay open later or even being able to keep your flowers from wilting. There's also a nice QR system for distributing patterns, a secondhand shop, the return of the island similar to that of the GC one, and much more customization options added.

Still cute, relaxing, and a nice game to play in small increments every day. We recommend to buy a digital copy of this game.

Rune Factory 4

Pretty much the best Harvest Moon game on the DS/3DS. It's an action RPG and farming/crafting/life sim hybrid with tons of stuff to do. You play as either a prince or a princess who runs their own farm, crafting your own gear, building relationships, making boss monsters your pets, exploring dungeons and entering festivals.

The amount of content packed into the game is simply awesome, and perhaps beaten by only a few games in that department as you can easily spend over a hundred hours beating all of the story arc and maxing out everything there is to do.

The only reason I'd say to skip this is if the anime style turns you off.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3D (n3DS only)

Not technically out as of this writing, but since it is a port of an already existing game I feel like its fair enough to make this recommendation. This is one of my all time favorite games and comes highly rated by other goons, it's an RPG that takes place on the top of two titan corpses, the Bionis and Mechonis, who have frozen in time after a long and hard battle. But life sprang up from their corpses and now their inhabitants are locked in an endless war with each other. Features stunning environments and a gigantic world to explore with hours upon hours of content and story. This is the first exclusive for the n3DS as old 3DS hardware simply would not be able to handle something that pushed the Wii to its limits.

The port features 3D effects, an enemy collection, model viewer, music box, and compatibility with the Shulk Amiibo. However if you already own Xenoblade for the Wii feel free to skip it. But for the rest it's a good alternative to those who don't want to shell out for a Wii copy which is rare now and fetches over $70 online and must have for any RPG fan.

If your interest is piqued, there is a thread on SA to discuss this game and the upcoming spiritual sequel for the WiiU Xenoblade Chronicles X.

PilotWings Resort
Did you love the PilotWings games on SNES and N64, did you wish the mini-PilotWings inside Wii sports resort was a real game? Then look no further than PilotWings resort, which has you flying around Wuhu Island in a plane, jetpack and glider. Excellent use of 3D, many challenges and collectables. Perhaps a bit shallow, but considering its a first-party game and you can pick it up for $4.99 at Gamestop, its well worth that amount of money. If you like pilotwings, or want a relaxing flying game, this is it.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Nintendo decided to make a sequel to A Link to the Past and ended up making (opinions may vary) the best Zelda game since A LInk to the Past, some would argue even better than ALttP and the best Zelda game ever. But whatever the case, if you like Zelda at all, this is one game you can't miss, especially not if you have fond memories of ALttP. It's pretty much a distilled verion of the Zelda formula, being probably the least linear game in the series since the first Legend of Zelda. Did I mention that the 3D is fantastic? Because the 3D is fantastic.

Kid Icarus Uprising
21 years later a new Kid Icarus game was released and it was amazing. A third person action game split into air segments where you shoot enemies and land stages where you run around punching enemies, a complaint people might have about it is the controls, as you move with the circle pad and aim with the stylus. No, having a circle pad pro or New does not let you use dual stick aiming, the right stick does exactly the same thing the left one does. It's for left-handed people. The game came with a stand for the 3DS to rest on while playing, but no idea how available that is anymore.

But if you can accept the controls, you can get to experience a fantastic action game with a lot of stuff to do, many weapons to craft, a ton of challenges to clear (same challenge panel system as in Smash Bros - Uprising is also one of Sakurai's brainchildren) and the best dialogue on the 3DS. The conversations between Pit, Palutena and various other good and bad guys are unforgettable.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call
If you like rhythm games, you might have played the Ouendan games and Elite Beat Agents for the DS. While there's no Ouendan 3D, there's this. And it has enough content to keep you occupied forever. Over 200 songs on the cart itself to start with, and another 80+ to be had through DLC (as of February 2015, and they keep releasing more). Three types of stages that while all are played through tapping or holding or swiping on the touchscreen (doesn't matter where) at the correct time still actually makes it feel like slightly different kind of gameplay. Cute chibi FF characters to level up and assign skills and kill monsters and get loot. A Quest mode exists, but if you don't want to bother with the RPG elements, you can mostly ignore that completely and just play songs.

OTHER 3DS STUFF

PLEX WORKS!!! You can now view feature length 3D movies via plex, plus all the normal 2d content and music you could always use.

DoctorWhat posted:

And I can confirm that Plex works on 3DS AND that any side-by-side or top/bottom formatted 3D video file, in either orientation, is compatible with the 3DS Web Browser's Video Player!

Here is how to tag videos so Plex knows they're 3D (not sure if this is absolutely necessary, but here it is)

forums.plex.tv posted:

From the FAQ:

Q: Does your app support 3D content?
A: Yes, the app supportes Half SBS and Half TAB content. The app switches automatically in 3D mode when it detects 3D content but this works only if you name your files correctly. You must include in the filename H-SBS or Half-SBS for Side-By-Side content and H-TAB or Half-TAB for Top-And-Bottom content. This is not case sensitive. An example as filename would be: Kung.Fu.Panda.2.2011.half-sbs.1080p.mkv.

FINDING UTUBE 3D CONTENT

greatn posted:

Also what's the best way to find 3d YouTube (or other video) content?

Jim Silly-Balls posted:

Search for "SBS 3D" instead of just 3D. SBS (side-by-side) weeds out a lot of the 2d videos that are depicting something in 3d. You can also try "TAB 3D", for top-and-bottom 3D, which the 3ds also supports.

"Anaglyph 3d" references the red and blue glasses style 3d, which the 3ds can also deal with.

E: youtube should also let you filter any search for 3d video, but I don't know if that works on the mobile site?

Hope this helps.

BUT DR. SILLY-BALLS, I WANT TO TALK ABOUT :filez:

OK, there is one big player in the flashcart market right now for the 3DS, Gateway. They keep playing cat and mouse with Nintendo. Nintendo patches out their ability to load ROMS, and Gateway patches in another way to do it. As of recently NINTENDO HAS BEEN BANNING CONSOLES that they see using Gateway cards. This is an NNID and a console ban, so use at your own risk!!

Rumor has it that Supercard, makers of the DSTWO flashcart will be making a 3DS version. It hasnt materialized as of this post.

There is also the tried and true DSTWO card, which was best-in-breed for the DS. Still works on the 3DS, still owns, but just plays regular DS homebrew/roms.

Head over here for real flashcartchat: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2991093

Plus using plex allows you to watch it without eating your SD card with a big movie file.

Also what's the best way to find 3d YouTube (or other video) content?

Search for "SBS 3D" instead of just 3D. SBS (side-by-side) weeds out a lot of the 2d videos that are depicting something in 3d. You can also try "TAB 3D", for top-and-bottom 3D, which the 3ds also supports.

"Anaglyph 3d" references the red and blue glasses style 3d, which the 3ds can also deal with.

E: youtube should also let you filter any search for 3d video, but I don't know if that works on the mobile site?

Hope this helps.

Anyone know if an Ace Combat demo is supposed to show up? Should I just base my purchasing decision on YouTube videos or what?

I just bought the new 3ds. This is my first portable system since my PSP days. I'm debating that I should have gotten a Vita instead but I think I know all of one person with it. Anything I should know and what games are good to grab for someone looking for a deep gaming experience?

What you should know is that you made the right choice re: 3ds vs Vita

Do the DS flash carts that happened to work on the 3DS (basically the DSTWO and the R4i 3DS RTS) still work on the New 3DS? I am right in the middle of Metal Gear Solid for GBC.

I can't speak for the r4i, but the dstwo works.

My questions is: is nintendo banning DS flash carts as well as gateway cards, or is it just gateway cards?

It's pretty harmless - the only F2P element is an energy cap that replenishes every 30 minutes. I say give it a shot - you're getting Club Nintendo stars for downloading it anyway.

Do you really get stars/coins for it? I thought anything released after x date wouldn't get them? If that's the case I'll download it just for the coins.

I set my output to 480p and still got the same error so I gave up.

It's an encoding thing for me. Some videos won't play at 480, some will, I have to figure out what it wants for encoding first.

However, I thought the beauty of plex was that it transcoded on the fly so you don't have to worry about encoding? I guess not.

Even though they system has 2x ram, the game doesn't know that and will use the normal 3ds ram amount. It would need to be patched for the extra cores and ram.

If you wear glasses, that's it. Certain designs of glasses can cause it to lose track of your eyes.

If you don't wear glasses, please verify that you have eyes and a mouth, if you do, there may be something wrong with your 3ds.

Lighting doesn't matter, as its viewing you in infrared light, which is how it can track you in the dark.

Is there a way to make the super stable 3d crap not freak the gently caress out constantly? It looks like my glasses gently caress up the head tracking or something. I've tried fiddling with the calibration settings but it doesn't seem to fix the problem.

The image constantly splits and flickers and there's ghosting and all sorts of poo poo. I'd play without my glasses except I need them to see things. I like seeing things.

I like seeing things too, so I put my glasses on my head or next to me while I play and then put them back on when I need to see something.

It's not like super stable 3d won't work unless you throw your glasses into the ocean, they just need to be off your eyes.

Or get 90's super skinny wireframe glasses it can probably see through those.

I have to say in readily enjoying New Super Mario Bros 2 and think that game is somewhat unfairly maligned. I really love the super relaxed timer, which gives you a ton of time to fully explore whatever level you're in and just collect every coin, even if it seems the only thing you get for collecting coins is a message saying "You collected coins!"

I really like nsmb1 and nsmb wii, so I fully expect to like nsmb2. I'm just waiting for a sale or price drop, since I already have a lot of other 3ds games to get through.

If you want it, now would be the time since it's one of the final Club Nintendo rewards and there are people in SA-Mart willing to buy it for you with points at deep discounts.
Personally I think it's a tad boring to play single-player, but it's a lot more fun to play with a friend (not download-play though, both players need a copy of the game). You don't even really have to worry about killing each other with dick moves, because you don't lose a life unless you're both dead / bubbled at the same time.

Wait, there is a thread for people to buy things with points in sa mart? Please direct me to that thread!!!!

The wii and the ds both had goofy per-game system implementations like that. Each ds game had its own complete networking stack on the cart, there was no system-wide networking to take advantage of.

That must have been how nintendo did it last gen.
