As a fan of Vikings (at least the first few seasons), I tried to watch Norsemen. It's a genre parody like Airplane, Scary Movie, or Another Gay Movie, except it's only mining one IP for inspiration, and there isn't enough there go around. So instead they take one conceptual joke, and just drag it into the ground until it's dead and tired. If the initial joke had actually be funny, that would be one thing. But it's not funny.

Britain's Best Home Cook is on Hulu, with head judge Mary Berry, in a format pretty much identical to the Great British Bake Off, except for general home cooking instead of specifically just baking.

It's okay. It's perfectly watchable to put on in the background. But it somehow doesn't have the same charm as Bake Off. Charm that Bake Off still has even without Mary Berry.

Conclusion, while Mary Berry is a treasure, she is not the key to the success of either of these shows.

The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell is so entertaining. She's obviously not an actress, which is especially noticable in the second episode where she sounds like she has a bad cold. I keep wanting to watch it with my kid, but then a character will drop a line where I think I really don't want to have her asking me or her mom what that meant. Going to be a fun Halloween marathon when she's a little older though!

Yeah, I was thinking that too, but then I realized that it will probably just go over their heads.

It's really fun show, and I recommend it.

Am I the only person who has sound issues with Amazon prime? I use a ps4 with 5.1 sound speakers and a 5.1 receiver. I plug my ps4 in with the hdmi cable and I have two problems:
(netflix/hulu/games are absolutely fine)
1: amazon prime voices are often too soft and the other sound is too loud. I use subs when available and my hearing is fine.
2: I have to turn the receiver up to 45 volume, while netflix/hulu are fine at about 30.

I've hosed with the ps4 sound settings: raw(pcm I think?)/dts/dolby or whatever. they're all supported by the receiver and none of them work properly for amazon.

A friend told me to use the pc for amazon prime. I should try that, it's also plugged into the receiver.

I've been having this issue with my PS4 a lot lately. And it's not just Prime specific. Netflix is fine, and I can play it at 10 volume. Playstation Vue and Amazon Prime lately I have to turn the volume all the way up to 50 to hear it.

So Amazon Prime is now advertising their original shows before anything you watch on there. At least it's not straight up commercials yet, like Hulu which plays the exact same commercial every commercial break.

I'm completely surprised by this, but everybody should watch Dogs on Netflix. I totally thought it was going to be some inane TLC type series with just lots of videos of dogs being cute, or maybe at most something about the evolution of dogs from wolves.

But no. Each episode is like a mini documentary. The first episode dealt with a young girl with serious epilepsy, and her family, as they were about to welcome a service dog into their home. The second episode deals with a Syrian refugee in Berlin who had to leave his husky Zeus back in Syria with a friend, and his efforts to bring Zeus to Berlin.

It's very good.

Edit: I just finished episode 2, and I definitely teared up a little bit. Episode 3 is about a dog who works on a small fishing boat in the Italian Alps. The cinematography in this episode is gorgeous.

Edit: You guys. Episode 4 is about dog hair stylists from Tokyo entering an American dog grooming competition.

How far did you get into The Magicians? Because season 1 ranges from mediocre to average at best. I only kept on going because I was a fan of the books.

Season 2 is when the show really starts to become good, and season 3 cemented it as one of the best shows currently on TV.

I've been having a hard time finding a really good show to watch properly after finishing Happy!, which is like in my top shows ever now and is a tough act to follow. I'm slowly watching The Expanse, which I'm supposed to like as a big fan of hardish sci-fi and cyberpunkish stuff in particular but for some reason it just doesn't grab me, it all moves so slow and is punctuated by super serious conversations and sometimes just feels to me like sort of generic modern TV drama stuff instead of actual innovative sci-fi, but I've been told it gets better in the second season and I'm almost done with the first.

Yeah, they dragged book one out across a season and a half, which doesn't really make sense. They begin to speed things up in season 2, and by season 3, the action is moving at breakneck speed.

New season of Room 104 is ok. It's kind of inconsistent but as far as anthology shows go it's not that bad. other than that I dunno. HBO hasn't really been knocking it out of the park lately. It's basically a small handful of middling shows and movies and final GOT season teasers. Yet it's the most expensive streaming service for some inexplicable reason.

maybe the new true detective will be good.

They did this 10 years ago or so. They decided that they wanted to get out of the big TV production game, so they canceled their more expensive shows like Deadwood, Rome and Carnivale, and put out a bunch of much cheaper shows. We did get some good things out of it like Flight of the Conchords, Summer Heights High and Eastdown and Bound. But we also got Tell Me You Love Me, and John from Cincinnati. And none of these did all that well, regardless of quality. The only true hit they got out of this era was True Blood.

Once Game of Thrones ends in a few months and everybody cancels their HBO subscriptions, they're going to realize, "Oh, gently caress...", they're going to realize that they need more than one big hit at a time.

also the extremely short shot at the end where both of their eyes change color to indicate neither of them are "them", which was confusing since if Natalie Portman's character could tell she had been refracted just by looking at a drop of her blood under a microscope, surely the super secret mega scientists figured out she was a refraction or whatever, but it is heavily implied they did not during the questioning and last scene

I guess twist isn't the right word, but it was lazy and predictable

I don't agree that is what happened. I just watched it last night, and read some things about it today, and my impression was that She came out as herself, but she's still changed. But she's also okay with her husband being just the doppleganger.

I don't recall seeing anyone talking about this, but Alfonso Cuaron's latest Roma is wonderful. It's a very specific look at a very specific type of people during a very specific time in Mexican history, and never goes where you think it will. I spent like an hour afterwards reading about the major historical event depicted in the movie, and also shocked to learn that Cuaron says that the movie is basically 90% based on his own life, right down to filming in the house across the street from where he grew up, and 70% of the furniture in the movie being his family's.

Yeah, PEN15 really is fantastic. So so funny. I'm a guy, and a few years older than the characters portrayed in the show, but god drat, it really does a great job of portraying teenagers in that era.

And the show very easily could step into cringeworthy and awkward, because that's so much what being 13 is about. And it does that a little, but with healthy doses of sympathy for these characters.

Also, you completely forget that the two leads are actually 30, and not 13 in the show, Which is so funny given that they are acting with a slew of actual 13 year olds.
