So AEG, who wants to build the stadium in downtown LA, commissioned a report about how the Inglewood stadium would be a likely site for a terrorist attack.

The LA Times had a little slideshow of the current proposed stadiums, and also included a drawing of a proposed Carson stadium from the 90s:

If the Rams secure their deal in Inglewood, then Carson as a dual-team stadium is dead, because the NFL won't allow three teams in LA. It's also dead as a single-team stadium, because the economics are terrible and neither the Chargers or Raiders can afford to build there alone. They may attempt to force Kroenke to accept a second team in Inglewood, but I don't know the logistics of that or how much of a threat that is. Certainly, Kroenke doesn't want to do that, because then he's splitting revenues with another team.

I think if he gets in, it weakens the bargaining position of the other teams. The Chargers, whether they stay or go, will demand compensation for the Rams moving into their turf.

Kroenke already announced that the Inglewood stadium is going to be built to house two teams. Two full sets of offices, owners boxes, home lockerrooms, etc

Glass of Milk posted:

"Kroenke doesn't need to partner with another team to finance the stadium, but the NFL sees L.A. as a two-team market and wants venues to be capable of hosting both. The Inglewood plan is two-team compliant, which means it has two home locker rooms, identical sets of office space, and two owners' suites. Whereas the Carson proposal is based on the Chargers and Raiders simultaneously relocating, it is widely believed Kroenke does not want to share the market with another NFL team right away, and, because he would be assuming the risk of the stadium by himself, would want to reap the benefits of getting his team up and running as L.A.'s sole franchise."

http://www.latimes.com/sports/nfl/la-sp-nfl-stadium-inglewood-20150322-column.html

Both things are true, I think. He doesn't want to share the stadium, but he's going through the process because he knows the NFL will be more likely to put the screws in if he doesn't design it with two teams in mind. The design can quickly change if the Raiders and Chargers get stadium deals in their respective cities.

I don't know precisely, but I would think if he builds and owns the stadium, he can charge rent to whatever other team shows up. Plus he would likely retain all of the naming rights money. Alternatively, he could make a second team pitch in some cash to the construction if he's the only game in town.

He wants to share the use of the stadium, but he wants to be the sole owner of the stadium. He wants a second team there so there are more home games and more revenue for him.

He also wants to get back to the market a year or two earlier to build up a strong fan base

Financing details, per LA Times

quote:

The plan would include $300 million from the Chargers, $200 million from the NFL, $173 million in construction bonds, $121 million from the city of San Diego and $121 million from San Diego County.

Also, $225 million would come from the sale to a developer of 75 acres at the Mission Valley site, the current home of Qualcomm Stadium. The committee also estimated that more than $100 million could be raised from fans through personal-seat licenses and ticket and parking surcharges.

So between 240 and 410 million in public funds, depending on the what type of bonds the construction bonds are. Maybe even more depending on if the city/county currently owns the Qualcomm land that is going to be sold

EDIT:

quote:

The stadium would be home to the Chargers, the San Diego State Aztecs, the Holiday and Poinsettia Bowls and events including bar mitzvahs, weddings, proms, reunions, corporate gatherings, monster truck jams, music festivals and religious ceremonies, the mayoral committee suggested in its 43-page report.
That would be one hell of a Bar Mitzvah

-They're not going to get 3 teams, there are just 3 trying to move. At most only 2 will be allowed to move

-Almost certain, there will not be a better time to move for over a decade, and Oakland and, to lesser extent, San Diego have no concrete plans in place for replacing the stadium. Oakland in particular needs a one, the Colliseum is a poo poo hole of historic proportions and Oakland has 0% interest in helping fund a new one since they are still paying off the renovations to bring the Raiders back to town

-Coliseum is going to host one, but is legally prevented from hosting 2. The Rose Bowl has said they won't deal with the ordeal of getting approval for it, so the second one will likely be at one of the baseball stadiums or where ever the gently caress the Galaxy plays

San Diego Chargers·Friday, 29 January 2016

Dear Chargers Fans,

Today I decided our team will stay in San Diego for the 2016 season and I hope for the long term in a new stadium.

I have met with Mayor Faulconer and Supervisor Roberts and I look forward to working closely with them and the business community to resolve our stadium dilemma. We have an option and an agreement with the Los Angeles Rams to go to Inglewood in the next year, but my focus is on San Diego.

This has been our home for 55 years, and I want to keep the team here and provide the world-class stadium experience you deserve.

Everyone on both sides of the table in San Diego must now determine the best next steps and how to deploy the additional resources provided by the NFL.

I am committed to looking at this with a fresh perspective and new sense of possibility.

With deep appreciation for your years of support,

I stumbled upon this fun bit of history from when the Rams were looking to leave LA, back in 94:

http://articles.latimes.com/1994-09-03/sports/sp-34347_1_foregone-conclusion

quote:

One year from this very day--Sept. 3, 1995--the NFL will open the regular season with the Baltimore Rams playing to a full house in Camden Yards.

Fact or fiction?

According to John Shaw, Ram president, not even he knows where the team will be a year from now.

"Do I believe the Rams are going to move?" Shaw said, repeating a question. "It's absolutely not a foregone conclusion, but it's a distinct possibility."

By the end of the month, Shaw will have met again in Los Angeles with Peter Angelos, majority owner of the Baltimore Orioles and the leader in the clubhouse in the battle over the Rams.

Hartford, Conn., has submitted a serious proposal to the Rams, St. Louis is building a stadium and Anaheim refuses to surrender.

A financial analyst has been hired to tour the interested cities and verify promises and projections that have been submitted to the Rams. The paper work is piling up, the clock is running and team owner Georgia Frontiere is waiting for Shaw's recommendation.

A deal is all but in place with Angelos, who is acting on behalf of Baltimore, and it could be completed quickly, but Shaw said the team will wait to further explore Hartford and St. Louis, while also listening to Anaheim.
