I'd say there's also more surface area to brown but I suspect I'm somewhat misunderstanding midwest cooking.

The calorie count seems halfway reasonable if it's meant to be split between six people, but even then that's a meal, not a starter, and you can do a lot better for a meal than "onion+batter+oil."

The pool of fatwater "sauce." I just can't imagine it adds anything to the dish other than hydration. Actually I can imagine pretty good what that entire dish tastes like. Wet chicken and freezerburn. This, by contrast, looks alright. Okay, it's just toast with something like garlic butter and fishfingers, but that's got to be hard to gently caress up.

If you're a restaurant and you need a whole lot of egg slices you don't have to cook and slice a whole lot of eggs. Also if you're in prison and want to win a bet you can agree on them as a standardized quantity so the other guy can't weasel out of it by saying "oh I meant quail".

I'm the same way about banana texture. But one day a friend of mine made chocolate covered banana slices and somehow the chocolate shell made them really awesome. I devoured them. To be fair we also blazed like it was a contest all evening, that may have been a contributing factor.

Some German recipes use a special gingerbread for the sauce, too. If it's roughly the same stuff, I can source this easily! Feel free to link an original non-English recipe, I can probably figure out the gist of it.
