The latest Humble Weekly sale is focused on VNs. Hatoful Boyfriend for 1$ is a steal for anyone who hasn't picked it up yet, and The Royal Trap in the BTA tier is pretty great, too, by the same lady who did Long Live the Queen. It's 100% a traditional VN (no stats or anything) but if you wanted more well-written medieval fantasy political intrigue it's definitely worth a read.

It was mainly split between people who thought any censorship at all was a crime against the game and people who thought Mangagamer took it too far by doing stuff like censoring some references to characters' breasts and having a character bathing alone while wearing a towel to censor what was a nude scene.

Apparently they extensively rewrote one character's route from scratch because a lot of her actual plot was based around the sex stuff? idk

I normally stay away from these "average straight dude" romance games, especially ones that used to be porn games, but if it comes that highly recommended, I might give it a look.

Eh. I've played through some of it, and it's alright? The protag gets a bit more development than "average straight dude", there's some pretty interesting moments here and there, and the characters have some pretty good chemistry;, but overall it doesn't really do a lot to differentiate itself from the crowd other than a whole lotta words about gliders and flying.

At $7 bucks it's worth a buy for people who like genericish high school love stories I guess? The translation's riddled with grammatical errors, for what it's worth.

Sweet Fuse is probably my favorite otome VN! My only real complaint is that the metaplot's pacing only works if you play through the routes in a very specific order. The ~secret~ route kinda sucked too, but everything else was so fantastic it doesn't even matter.

Urgh. I've been playing through Amnesia: Memories after getting it for a buck back in the Steam Thanksgiving sale. It certainly wasn't my favorite VN ever or anything, but I was enjoying it. Ikki's route had a pretty decently sized helping of standard otome creepy poo poo in it, but it was never too terrible and was neat overall. Kent's route was legitimately pretty great. Then there's loving Toma.

Jesus loving christ I hate yandare characters, especially when you can get "good" endings with them that aren't knocking them the gently caress out and calling the cops. The same poo poo popped up in Sweet Fuse, too, but at least there it was easily ignorable; and the rest of the game was fantastic enough to make up for the slight blemish.

Are there any VN's that feature abusive characters like that where the true ending is "this poo poo is dangerous and hosed up, get the hell out of dodge right now"? The only thing I can really think of is Magical Diary with Damien's route, and that's a Western made game.

My issue with it is that the soundtrack, while good, requires you to manually shuffle it. Could the developers not decide what tracks would work best in these situations, and can I not just hit shuffle on all of them? Also while the writing seems okay, there's no real point to the actual game as bartending is stupidly easy and kinda boring. Nice art and music, but it feels kinda half arsed.

The soundtrack doesn't require you to manually shuffle it 24/7, dude. That's only during the bartending portions of the game, and I think it's pretty cool to let you pick and choose the songs and atmosphere you wanna keep. I just picked the 12 chillest songs, put them on shuffle, and called it good. Every other part of the game has a non-jukebox, regular soundtrack.

That is true, but the bartending part of the game is the game. Everything else is window dressing. I don't want to have to sort through the songs and have to learn their names for what is at most an 8-10 hour game.

Your song selection gets saved, you can literally spend five minutes at the beginning of the game picking your favorites and then forget about it completely for the rest of the game.

Good visual novels don't need tacked on gameplay. If the tacked on gameplay is bad, it's a bad visual novel. The game this is closest to is Phoenix Wright, and Phoenix Wright is always at its worst when you're hunting for pixels and searching for evidence. This game is worst when you're making drinks. The issue is that this game is about making drinks whereas Phoenix Wright is about court cases. There are things other than the bad gameplay. Also they make you click a hell of a lot and there's no auto-scroll option that I can find.

The game isn't about making drinks, the game's about talking to your patrons with the drinks as window-dressing to make sure you're paying attention. I also don't think it really compares to Phoenix Wright's pixel hunting at all, considering that making drinks takes at the most like 15 seconds once every couple of minutes.

But there are a lot a lot a lot of VNs on Steam and itch.io and I'm sure some are good?? I already did Doki Doki but I have Hustle Cat from a bundle. And someone recommended Butterfly Soup to me. There's a f2p otome VN called Cinderella Phenomenon that has overwhelmingly positive reviews but the art looks like a real mixed bag. I tried a demo of Icebound and it was okay but the puzzles in the game seem forced into the story for the sake of having a gameplay mechanic.

I'll file ironic Sakura/Nekopara/Hunie recs under D for Dumpster

Hanako Games does good work, even if her stuff usually has enough actual gameplay to not really be a "pure" VN, Long Live the Queen and Black Closet are both highlights.

Christine Love's newest game is legit really good and has probably the best dialogue/choice system I've seen in any VN, but it's also at least 60% porn so it does not belong in this thread.

thought of a couple good freeware western otome vns

Aloners - post apocalyptic poo poo. Deals primarily with the heroine's relationship with one single, focal dude; and you get a shitton of dialogue choices to flesh your character's personality out. Been a couple years but I was engrossed enough that I played through the whole dang thing in one sitting.

Our Personal Space - uniquely for a VN, you start the game married and spend the game developing your relationship with your husband. The premise is that you're both colonists, sent to be among the first people to live on a Miracle New Earthlike Planet. You choose the heroine's job and skillset as she works to help make the colony a more livable place, and it's honestly satisfying in a, like, The Martian way.

both are a decent length- 4-5 hours maybe? Our Personal Space has more to see through separate playthroughs than Aloners.
