I just got a nice tablet after being stuck with a lovely old underpowered phone for ages and I'm hopelessly behind on any good games for it. What have been your overall highlights for your all time favorite Android games? Anything can be fair game, honestly.

Spry Fox, makers of Triple Town and Alphabear have a new game out called Bushido Bear. You're a ninja bear and you swipe around the screen killing bad guys in endless waves. Seems good so far with no apparent energy systems or anything like that.

Gimme your best lighterweight phone or tablet game that doesn't require a data connection and doesn't drain a ton of battery because I'm going on a trip for a week with inconsistent-to-no-internet and wouldn't mind something to mess around with on a device if I end up getting rained out and have to keep myself entertained inside.

It's alright but pretty simple. I had to play it on my tablet for better accuracy and multitap, and after swapping over I beat it in two tries. Still don't know if you can do anything to guard against time loss in the bosses, though

I never really played any roguelike style games and now i feel stupid for not exploring them earlier. Anything else similar i should check out on android? I think i'd prefer turn-based because i'm slow with fat fingers.

I saw "Caves of Qud" by the same people but it looks ancient and the graphics turn me off so i didn't even try to download it.

caves of qud is probably the best modern roguelike but i've never tried it on a phone

thanks, dude, but i'm saying the game's subject matter specifically takes on a real bad light given the allegations against alexis kennedy

i mean it less as 'don't watch this movie with kevin spacey because he's a pedo' but more as a 'this movie has some good bits but also has kevin spacey actively grooming/seeking a relationship with someone underage/much younger than him and it makes it real uncomfortable'

ANYWAY if you do like the aesthetic i'd recommend picking up sunless sea/sunless skies, they play pretty well on a tablet

Relics are gacha. It's a little different in how you get 'rolls' on them (do missions to get them, then do missions to crack them) but it's gacha. Waaaay more lenient than usual gacha mechanics but yeah you can pay money for them and hope you get lucky, or with that recent even, pay for the premium event currency (regal aya) to bypass them entirely and purchase the results.

part of being 'gacha' is not being able to obtain the things involved directly, and being forced to roll randomly to get what you want. not only do you not need to spend money on getting relics, you can buy everything you can get from relics directly and trade for them with other players since it's an mmo

Jabor posted:

Being able to acquire rolls in-game without spending money is irrelevant - that's literally how all gachas work, give you just enough to get hooked for free and ask for money to get more.

Stuff being freely tradeable instead of account-locked, on the other hand, makes it not a gacha. It's just a regular casino game at that point.

i think you're getting a bad impression of what i meant since you've never played the game -- what i mean is you *never* have to spend money on relics (which are a small part of the game, anyway). i do know that gachas give you limited stuff for free and want you to pay more, but you're never limited on it.

it's just straight up random drops like any other mmo. you do content, you get something at the end, you run it again if the something you get isn't what you want or sell off the thing you got to buy what you want directly. gachas are poisonous because they have chase items and people sink hundreds to thousands of dollars to get them; that's why they *don't* have a cash store to pay $1 to buy the thing you want instead

you're really not saying anything new when complaining that a free to play game wants to make you eventually spend money on it. it's nice when they don't, but it's not worth getting lovely about people talking about a game in terms of how reasonable it is to play without spending money on it/spending very little

like, there's many games out there that literally are unplayable
after a certain point without spending money to speed up timers or to buy the macguffin that bars your progression. there's multiplayer games where you're simply not going to function without dropping $50 to catch up. it's a spectrum and it's good to know where a game falls on it
