Buriedbornes is a neat old-school dungeon crawler type game if you'd be into something like that.
It has some online features though (like running into other player's corpses in the dungeon), and I think you have to go into a menu somewhere and hit the 'pre-download everything' button before it'll work offline.

Game mechanics aren't protected by copyright, patent or trademark.
You can make an exact replica of any game you like as long as you don't copy the writing, art, or level design.
For example look at OpenMW, a 100% replication of the Morrowind engine, and it's 100% legal.
But they don't distribute any game assets with it -- you have to grab those from an existing legally-obtained copy of morrowind to use them with OpenMW if you want to actually play the game.

IRL example, one time I found amazon hosed up the pricing algorithm for a dice/card game and my partner and I got a booster box of packs for $7 vs $150 and it was fun to open the packs to see what we got.

Your best bet is to kind of jump around between different games all the time. Lots of games are pretty generous and give tons of rolls early on for the "new player experience" before petering off.
And then there are others that hand out daily rolls during holidays or anniversaries or whatever.
So you can just play whatever has a promotion going on and don't get too committed to it, then jump ship to the next one.

e: for example this Nier-themed gacha game that I've never heard of or played has an anniversary promo for 220 free pulls right now:

You can install it, do your beginner pulls, tool around for a few days in the gameplay, then if a week if you aren't in love just pitch it and try a new one out.

You can buy almost every ingame resource with the realmoney currency but you typically get pathetically low amounts such that it's absolutely not ever worth it. Warframe's cash shop economy is not tuned very well at all.
There's basically 3 non-cosmetic things in the cash shop that are actually worth your platinum (inventory slots, reactors/catalysts, maybe forma), and then the only other thing you use cash shop currency for is inter-player trading, giving someone 20 platinum for their rare drop so THEY can go use that plat on buying more inventory space or potatoes.

For example the warframe shop sells nearly every gun in the game pre-built for like $15-20 of premium currency, even though most of them you can trivially craft for free with like 15 minutes of work (and a 24 hour wait before it finishes building). It sells 175,000 credits for 90 platinum (about $5), but you can also play a minigame mode for free called The Index that gives 250,000 credits per ~5-7 minute round.
You can pay 75 credits for an "essential cold/heat/electric/toxic mod bundle" that contains the basic weapon mods for each weapon type in that element, but most players will get dozens and dozens of these as random drops and you only ever need 1 of each, so if you're in a clan your buddies will probably just give you all that poo poo for free if you ask rather than spending 300 plat / 20-ish dollars on buying the set.

usually multiplayer games are just sending lightweight stuff like positions or button inputs, nothing like audio/video/etc. it should be about as demanding as browsing SA (actually less since pokemans doesn't have embedded tweets)

if your phone has a data usage monitor (android has this builtin, idk about ios), check it before and after a gameplay session and take screenshots each way and you'll be able to see how much data you go through

if you're having trouble surviving early on, try to avoid diluting your weapon pool too much. having one level 8 weapon is a lot better than three level 3 weapons due to the way weapon upgrades act as a force multiplier to each other, so picking too many new things early on means you will struggle a lot more. when given the choice between picking up a great new weapon or putting a level into a meh passive, sometimes it is better to just pick the meh upgrade, just to avoid diluting your level-up pool with too many things so you can't focus all the level-ups on one weapon. after all, you only see 3 choices each level up so the more items you're carrying the less likely you'll be able to upgrade the ones you want

of course once you get one well upgraded weapon and survive the earlygame you can start branching out more, just don't try to fill all your slots with level 1 weapons 10 minutes in or you'll be toast

That can happen if you 'banish' an item, which prevents it from showing up in level up menus for the rest of the run. If you banish an item in the level up menu and then later pick the same item up off the ground, or if you banish an item you're already carrying, the unfilled squares will turn red and it will be impossible to level up any further.

i printed them out and stuck the thing in my wallet which now that i think about it is a pretty bad idea if i ever lose it, i should probably just forget them in a drawer at home somewhere

note though that these are only specifically for logging into your google account. afaik there is no way to have a backup of the whole 2FA authenticator, since it only offers the option to transfer accounts and not to copy them. if you lose your phone you will need to recover each of those 2fa-protected accounts individiually. having access to your gmail account from the backup codes thing will help a ton though
