Killing Floor 2 is a horde-based, single- and multiplayer PVE first person shooter developed by Tripwire Interactive and sequel to a beloved, Game of the Year Award winning Unreal Tournament 2004 mod. Announced on May 8th, 2014, Killing Floor 2 released on Steam Early Access on Tuesday, April 21st 2015 for $30/£20/€27 base edition and $40/£27/€37 special edition. Killing Floor 2 finally released on November 18th, 2016 after a long 18ish months in Steam Early Access. Killing Floor has one of the best online communities you will ever experience and survival depends on good communication and adaptability when a situation goes tits up. Released for retail in 2009, Killing Floor 1 enjoyed years of free updates that kept even the most veteran players hooked. We don’t see any reason to believe Killing Floor 2 will be any different.

About Killing Floor 2
Killing Floor 2 can be seen as a suped-up re-imagining of the original Killing Floor. Perks, zeds, weapons and the slow motion 'zed time' all make a triumphant return with new twists and vastly upgraded animations and graphics. Just like Killing Floor 1, you and up to five allies will battle four to ten waves of various enemies (zeds) before challenging a boss, spending time between waves buying upgrades and scrounging for ammo. Unlike Killing Floor 1, KF 2 will launch with 10 perks that can be leveled all the way to 25, letting you better survive even the most difficult encounters. KF2 is built upon a heavily modified version of Unreal Engine 3 which is used to expand upon the three essential pillars of Killing Floor gameplay: Bullets, Blades, and Blood.

Meet the Perks
  • Berserker
    • Weapons: Crovel Survival Tool (starter), Pulverizer, Zweihander, VLAD-1000 Nailgun, Katana, Eviscerator
    • A heavy, melee based bruiser class that specializes at slicing heads off. Skills focus on knocking zeds down, movement speed, and survivability.
  • Commando
    • Weapons: AR-15 Varmint Rifle (starter), SA80 L85A2 Bullpup, Kalashnikov AK-12, SCAR-H Assault Rifle
    • Assault rifle class that specializes in thinning out a crowd. Skills focus on making you more efficient in a firefight and extending zed time.
  • Support
    • Weapons: SG 500 Pump-Action (starter), Double-barrel Boomstick, M4 Combat Shotgun, AA-12 Auto Shotgun
    • Shotgun class that specializes in blowing heads clean off. Skills focus on survivability, carrying capacity, and damage.
  • Gunslinger
    • Weapons: Remington Army Model 1858 revolver (starter), M1911 pistol, Desert Eagle, .500 Magnum Zed Collector revolver
    • Gunslingers doublefist his way to victory with perks that greatly increase their damage output.
  • Field Medic
    • Weapons: HMTech-101 Pistol (starter), HMTech-201 SMG, HMTech-301 Shotgun, HMTech-401 Assault Rifle
    • The medic! Keep your team alive with high-tech gadgetry and weapons. Skills focus on armor, healing, and inflicting zeds with damage-over-time effects.
  • Firebug
    • Weapons: Caulk 'n Burn (starter), Dragon’s Breath Trench Gun, Flamethrower, Microwave Gun
    • Firebug is the best class for clearing trash, but their microwave gun is a surprisingly effective tool against Scrakes.
  • Demolitions
    • Weapons: HX25 Grenade Pistol (starter), C4 Remote-detonated explosive, M79 Grenade Launcher, RPG-7
    • Ka-boom! Effective against groups and fleshpounds, demolition perks focus on more explosions.
  • Sharpshooter
    • Weapons: Winchester Lever-action Rifle (Starter), Crossbow, M14, Railgun, Liquid Nitrogen Grenade
    • Long range specialist with heavy single-target damage weapons.
  • SWAT
    • Weapons: MP6RAS SMG (Starter), Flashbang Grenade, MP7 SMG, P90 SMG, Kriss Vector SMG
    • Submachine guns and heavy armor. The SWAT class is great for getting close and unleashing a wall of bullets.
  • Survivalist
    • Weapons: None! This perk uses the weapons of other classes.
    • The survivalist is a hybrid class that lets you create your own build to support your team.

Meet the Zeds
Clots, Husks, Stalkers, Scrakes. Every zed from Killing Floor 1 has been re-imagined for Killing Floor 2. Bloats will lower their head and charge; scrakes will spin, dash, and upcut players; husks will cover entire areas with flame. Additionally, zed attack patterns will become more sophisticated as players increase the difficultly.
  • Clot/Slasher/Cyst - Three variations on the basic Clot from Killing Floor 1. Cysts are weaker and slower, slashers are faster and more vicious. Clots can grab and hold players.
  • Crawler - These fuckers. Spider-like in appearance, crawlers will drop from ceilings and dark corners right into your face.
  • Gorefast - More aggressive and powerful than any clot, gorefasts will use their bladed arm to cut down doors and players quickly.
  • Stalker - Stealthed assassins, stalkers can appear and attack at the worst possible moment.
  • Siren - Sirens emit a piercing scream that ignores armor. Their scream also destroys grenades.
  • Bloat - Fatties that love to vomit all over you, obscuring your vision and dealing damage over time.
  • Husk - Flamethrower wielding zeds, husks will launch fireballs, spray flame, and eventually attempt to explode when near death.
  • Scrake - Chainsaw wielding maniacs, scrakes will charge and unleash an incredible amount of damage when provoked.
  • Fleshpound - Kill or be killed.
Bosses
  • Hans Volter - A 100-year old Nazi scientists kept alive by Horzine Biotech. This boss uses SMGs, grenades, and a life stealing attack to wear down your team.
  • The Patriarch - What have you done to his children???

Meet the M.E.A.T.
M.E.A.T. stands for Massive Evisceration And Trauma. Every zed has a wide variety of death and dismemberment animations which really let you enjoy the damage you’re putting out. Bodies will break apart, slice in half, and slump over; blood splatters will remain for the duration of a match.

General tips and recommendations
  • Melee alt-fire (default key: middle click with a melee weapon out) will let you parry enemy attacks. Here is a great video on parrying: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkQstOLz83I
  • The melee push (default key: V) will stumble any zed. Read more about stumbling here!
  • If a welded door is broken during a wave it will not come back. Don't waste doors that you could use later.
  • Using your 9mm pistol in the first few waves will save you money for better weapons later
  • Berserker EMP grenades will cancel mob abilities (except Siren) so use them on charging scrakes and Fleshpounds.
  • Eviscerator saw blades can be picked up after firing.
  • When you die you will drop your active weapon, make sure your active weapon is something good so you can pick it up if you come back.
  • Decapitating a zed will stifle their special abilities. Bloats can't puke, husks can't shoot, siren's can't scream, etc.
  • A medic pistol is cheap and light, buy one regardless of your perk so you can better heal teammates.
  • Want to see more corpses? Find KFGame.ini under %:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\My Games\KillingFloor2\KFGame\Config and pump "MaxDeadBodies=12" up. 25-40 is generally pretty great.
  • Want to disable mouse acceleration/smoothing? Find KFInput in the directory above and change "bViewAccelerationEnabled=" and "bEnableMouseSmoothing=" to False.

My hype level for this game has gone from "Might pick up when it's cheap and established like I did with KF1" to "Probably getting on release when it's a little more put together" to "Definitely buying over my phone when Early Access drops and remote downloading so it will be ready when I get home" in, like, a week.

It must be incredibly exciting for Tripwire to have so many people with such intense interest in an early access release, but I certainly don't envy them right now.

Speaking of which, do we have any information on download size? How big was the beta?

I really love everything put out by World of Level Design - especially their getting started guides on youtube - but if you have specific questions (ahh! something disappeared!) you should be able to find tons of stuff on youtube and google. Sadly it appears that the Killing Floor 2 UDK doesn't have a working landscape editor yet so Ganja Farm will have to wait because gently caress if I'm modeling landscape in another program and importing it.

Okay, added a bunch of stuff to the OP. Should I put info about http://steamcommunity.com/groups/GoonsontheKillingFloor in there? It's the largest KF goon group but it's very quiet.

edit: UI suggestion(s). I know someone pointed out the ammo for melee weapons, but I made a mock up where the perk icon shows up next to the weapon so maybe I stop accidentally selling guns I've picked up around the map.

Knee Deep in the Dead is the entire first episode, not one level. :v: Hangar (e1m1) wouldn't make a good KF map because it's essentially one corridor. If you wanted to adapt one map from episode 1, any of e1m2, e1m3, e1m4, e1m5, e1m7 or e1m9 would work pretty great with nearly zero alterations (you'd want to add connecting passages between adjacent sections of the map that normally aren't connected, that's about it).

Most of those maps have landscape in them (Wyre, Farm, Ganja) and the KF2 fork of UDK doesn't have a working landscape tool (yet) so you have to create a landscape in another modeling tool, turn it into a static mesh, and then import it into the game. That process is a gigantic pain in the rear end, so I understand why a lot of the current maps are pretty boxy.

The map I'm working on currently steals a ton of assets from the lab and I'm hoping to figure out enough kismet to make it scripted. The idea is this: whole level has normal lighting and open doors when the trader is available. When the wave starts the normal lights turn off and the levels is only illuminated by red/orange emergency. The intent isn't that it will be hard to see, I just want it to look different when you're blasting zeds. On top of that, a handful of doors will close and seal so the flow of the level will change. The doors won't open again until the trader returns.

I've never had any of these problems :iiam: The only time I've ever had an issue was streaming World to Warcraft straight to twitch and that was because one of the updates to WOW full on broke that functionality for a month. Recording video, clips, and screenshots were unaffected.

Forum post from Yoshiro about the Berserker.

http://steamcommunity.com/games/232090/announcements/detail/794107293842784935 posted:

Alas poor Berserker! I knew him, community, a perk of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy. Or one might say “Out with the old, in with the new!”. It is no secret we’ve been redesigning the perk tree for the Berserker. I am pleased to announce we are now testing those new designs in game. Now keep in mind, what you are about to see is still subject to change before the content update as we will be playtesting and iterating on the design. That is why final numbers are not included here as they are very much a work in progress, and the skills themselves could go through changes.

Berserkers who have reached the first skill tier (level 5) will now have their pick of resistances. X% Sonic or X% poison resistance. Which do you feel is the greatest threat to your playstyle, Bloats or Sirens? After you’ve made your choice, fear not your hated foe!

At the next skill tier (level 10), the choice comes down to additional max health or to regain health everytime you make a kill. Is it time to wade into that clot horde or go toe to toe with the large zed menaces?

At the halfway point (level 15) you must decide if you want to be a “striker” with fast hits or being one who takes a blow to dish it back out harder in return. This means your choice is between faster attacks overall and harder hitting hard attacks or a large boost to your damage after blocking an attack.

Have you mastered the parry or do you just feel you need to hit harder so you don’t need to? At this tier (level 20) your options are between having a successful parry increase your attack speed for a time or having heavy strikes do more damage and increased knockdown potential.

So when you’ve made it to the end and Zeds fall before you if you so much think of stepping their direction with a swing of your favorite weapon. The final tier (level 25) skills are your Zed time skills. So which option will you pick? The first option will grant you (in zed time) increased attack speed, successful parries will cause enemies to be knocked down (instead of a stumble back) as well as the ability to move in real time. The second option will grant an increased stun power on head hits, increased stumble power overall and the ability to move in real time as well.

Overall we feel zerker lovers will have much to be happy about as we finalize the new skill tree. As mentioned previously we are still working on the final numbers and percentages for the initial rollout of this new tree and we will likely be making tweaks up until the release.

5a X% Sonic resistance
5b X% poison resistance

10a Additional max health
10b Regain health on kill

15a Faster attacks overall and harder hitting strong attacks
15b Large boost to your damage after blocking an attack

20a Successful parry increase your attack speed for a time
20b Heavy strikes do more damage and increased knockdown potential

25a The first option will grant you (in zed time) increased attack speed, successful parries will cause enemies to be knocked down (instead of a stumble back) as well as the ability to move in real time
25b Increased stun power on head hits, increased stumble power overall and the ability to move in real time as well

Someone that plays Berserker more than me will probably have to comment on how they feel about these changes.

So what happened?

I was considering picking this up largely in part due to Tripwire's dedication and constant content infusions being impressive. Are they now slow, silent and full of microfees?

Actually, none of these things. They post a weekly update on their website about progress and the only people that are saying anything about bait and switches are the two idiots in this thread.

At this point, it's probably best if the KF devs stop posting because of the toxicity of this thread.

Now they just gotta add the Duke Nukem 3D gun that miniaturizes enemies so you can squish them.

I'm going to throw my voice in the heap of saying that you guys implemented the wrong change to fix power progression not being where you want it to be. I'm also going to agree that at this point you should just remove battlefield weapons because whenever I see them I either go "oh hey, $150," or "why couldn't have this been ammo/armor?" I never use them or even consider using them because by the time I see them I already have something better or am over capacity.

The idea that players should be using the pistols to conserve ammo/money is antithetical to your own design paradigm. You made us all start with perk weapons because perk weapons are loving cool and this is a game about killing poo poo and being loving cool about it. Now you want us to forgo the cool poo poo to plink away with milquetoast pistols all for the sake of balance. Yeah, screw that. I want to be able to run around a map firing my cool guns in the air to the beat of the music for shits and giggles on normal because I'm having a good time. I keep playing matches where I just run bone dry as support & commando even playing conservatively because, more often than not, I'm making up for unskilled or dead players.

If you want to punish lovely ammo management, then quadruple maximum ammo capacity and double the cost of ammo. That way players can have fun on lower difficulties just firing into crowds, but have to play more conservatively on higher difficulties. Hell, make ammo boxes only appear on lower difficulties, too.

I'd also point out that in the 40 hours I have in this game, about 3/4th of the matches I've played have included rounds where players leave a handful of zeds alive so they can go scavage. I understand your desire to kill this behavior because it's simply not fun and it punishes those that are new to the game. Lowering our ammo only incentives this behavior, so I don't know what you guys were thinking.

Dark maps loving suck. Why dump all the time and tech into an incredible gore system when your map is too dark to see it in action? gently caress man, Resident Evil 4 is brighter than Catacombs.

Yeah I disagree with you on all those points which is fine. The act of levelling is not content, gating content behind levels is dumb, more so in a CO-OP game. Nothing of worth would be lost if they completely got rid of it. People who don't care for it will get around it anyway.

I play all my games because I find them enjoyable, if you don't, please find something else to do :shobon:

This is the most salient point for me. If I have all of my perks at 25 and I get a friend to buy the game he'll end up pretty disappointed out of the gate that he doesn't get all the bells and whistles I do, and the carrots - I think we've all mentioned a handful of perks in the Demo tree like siren resistance - are sometimes too important and far away to be comfortable with. Additionally, I'd probably be playing on normal where I'd demolish 99% of the zeds with ease and the level 0 guy would get nothing, adding to their frustration.

Whenever I look at the perk trees & leveling system all I can think about is the Rune system from League of Legends. It's a system designed for a handful of F2P timesink reasons, but ideally it allows for some creativity in how specialized your character is for x, y, z scenarios. The problem is that it is a system almost entirely ignored. Players typically have a rune setup that works for 60% of their roster, another for 20%, and then a third for just loving around with gimmicks. I feel the same way about Perks. I have a setup for medic that I never deviate from because It Just Works. I don't feel like this should be interpreted as an indictment of the medic tree, but an indictment of the system itself. I don't pay attention to it. Every five levels I go "hey that looks good," for whatever class and never think about it again. As a side note, in LoL the rune system was used to gate Jungling making it impossible for low level players. I don't know if that's still the paradigm, though.

And that's what brings me back to the League of Legends point: the levels start to feel like a F2P mechanic at a certain point. Gating content is a necessary part of the experience, I think we all understand that to a degree. Throwing a shitload of mechanics at a player will overwhelm and frustrate players as much as keeping mechanics out of their grasp depending on how the system is implemented. Ain't nobody got time to read a Falcon 4.0 manual just to shoot some zeds. The problem is that as a method of gating content it is suuuuuuper lovely. Just looking through this thread I can't find a single post that doesn't sound like someone being outright punished for playing by the rules of the leveling system. New players can't play with their friends (a deep problem in LoL, too), experienced players are forced to cheat, inexperienced players aren't learning, and bad players get boosted and gently caress over everyone. In short, the fuckin' thing sucks.

The problem with fixing it is that the difficulty tiers are so dependant on the balance of the leveling/perk system while the leveling/perk system doesn't give a gently caress about difficulty. It feels like it should be a two-way street, but it isn't. Think of it this way, a level 0 joining a HOE server affects the server as much as a level 25, right? Zeds get boosted, etc etc etc. The server has no effect on the level 0 because, well to my knowledge, it has no way of telling that it's a level 0 or whatever. Obvious ideas would be: 1) boosting that 0 to 25, overwhelming them with perks and then pissing them off when they leave and are reset; 2) averaging levels to piss everyone off; 3) scaling the server differently so that a level 0 is something like a 6% difficulty increase and not a 20% increase (not real numbers); and 4) not allowing certain level ranges to join servers, splitting communities for the sake of balance. From my idiot-posting-on-the-internet perspective, I don't like any of these ideas. They're either insaaaaanely difficult to balance or outright hostile to the playerbase.

So here comes the pitch: remove leveling, reduce the perks and make them automatically applied to the class, and reduce the difficulty tiers to 1) normal, 2) normal with the special zed abilities for added difficulty but no added health or damage, and 3) stupidly difficult to cater to the grognard crowd. For anyone that has played World of Warcraft recently this system is similar to LFR, normal/heroic, mythic scheme. Keep us engaged with new places to see and new zeds to kill and not the idea that in another 4 hours I could do 1% more damage.

^^^^ get a load of this idiot.

On the other hand, having to pull out your pistol as any class because crawlers are gnawing your legs off in the dark is a death sentence if there are any big bads around, or if you accidentally fat finger your flashlight button and slowly pull out your pistol as a scrake chainsaws your face.

I think it's cool and good and will be a great addition to the feel of the game.

It's a subtle buff to Support that lose flashlights as they move up the tree so if you're using a double-barrell and AA12 then your only flashlight is the friggin' pistol.

And again, the game isn't finished it, the implication at least for me, is that the updates have been slow because they where working on introducing this.

I am sure that I am WAY OFF and they just had to separate teams or something working on it, but if I made that assumption, others might have.

All the stuff they've shown was from the GUNS N GEAR promotion. It's all fanmade. I feel like the work Tripwire did on this amounted to an afternoon or two of plugging it into the same system Valve uses for CS:GO. Hell, I bet a handful of Valve employees lead them through the process.

It looks like Armament isn't worth taking anymore if you're only 10-19. 25% less healing in exchange for 1% armor? If I knew how armor factors into damage taken I might have a better idea how much of a nerf that is, but it sounds pretty goddamn drastic. It really looks like you need to pair it with Vaccination now to make it worthwhile. With Armament alone, I don't think you could keep Hans' target alive solo.

Yeah, all I'm gathering from the nerf is that teams will need more medics. Moooorreeee medics

All of these changes seem well intentioned but poorly researched to the point that they look like kneejerk reactions. Zweihander overshadowing the pulverizer? Nerf the gently caress out of it! Every medic taking armorer perks? Make them 1/3rd as effective!

Hans? Hans is fine :smugdog:
