Honestly SaiKano is one of those shows I thought was really good when I first watched it in high school, but in retrospect was just tragedy porn. It was sort of like the tragedy version of a horror movie that relies on jump scares. I'm not sure if any of the other people recommending it also watched it many years ago like me (I imagine some might have, given when it came out), but I would take that into account.

I felt the same way. I first watched it in college and decided to get the DVDs when I saw them on sale years later. The rewatch was definitely not as good, but it still punched me in the gut.

The OVA mini series is just the same story told with different characters. I know it was trying to pull the whole parallel with the original story angle, but kind of falls flat since we never really see or hear of the OG weapon girl in the original series.

I've seen a handful of the bigger names over the last few years, but I don't know what I've missed out or am missing out on and I'm pretty sure I'm long past the point in my life where I can sit through just any old show.

I'm usually into stuff that's dialogue and character driven, where any action is either somewhat incidental or self-aware and campy, where the story is at least somewhat unconventional and original, and usually where the mood is downbeat. I probably won't be able to get into typical shounen action, another generic high school harem, godawful fanservice comedy, or predictable drama. Off the top of my head, from the last five or six years a few I've been able to get into are Jojo (it's campy and too fun not to get into), Kill La Kill (which totally surprised me since I couldn't get into Gurren Lagann), Long Dumb Name Snafu, Natsume Yuujinchou, Konosuba, Mob Psycho 100, Madoka, and Nichijou.

Any ideas where I should start?

Steins;Gate (Bonus: The dub for this is really loving good.)
Fate/Zero (The best way to enjoy the Fate franchise without delving too deep.)
Daily Lives of Highschool Boys (Think Nichijou with boys instead of girls and a bit more tongue-in-cheek.)

Looking for some anime recommendations from 2010 to now or so!

To make it more specific as per the op, I'm not currently looking for slice of life stuff, stuff about kids/in a school setting, etc. I guess that leaves dramas that are eventful, thrillers, fight things, comedies, action adventure, and whatnot. Pretty much, looking for cool stuff up my alley I might be missing out on, since I haven't been keeping up with anime as much in recent years.

One Piece, Kaiji, Jojo, Ippo Rising, One Punch Man, Lupin, and Rainbow are some I've enjoyed during this time period. I'll try Academia sometime, trying that Fate/Zero show next. I love the oldschool stuff mentioned in this thread by the way.

Steins;Gate
Fate/Zero
Fate: Unlimited Blade Works
the new Hunter x Hunter
Madoka Magica
Kara no Kyoukai

And even though you can argue its slice of life, Shirobako.

Uhhh I feel like I watched a totally different show because it seemed like there was plenty of critique of the core concept of the Sibyl system. Sure, most of the characters you see are perfectly fine with it, that's kind of the point.

Season 2 is basically a completely different show which stole the characters and some of the setting to do its own thing and it's not awful, but it's a lot worse and should be ignored.

I am of the third way. I remember watching Psycho-Pass years ago, but can't remember a drat thing about it. It left basically no impression on me.

i don't even think ufotables is a bad studio cause the less cg-heavy stuff they've done that i've seen looks beautiful, i just hate the style they use for stuff like f/z

I only remember three major uses of CG in F/Z, actually: Berserker, The Air Ship, and The Cup + mud

Yeah, the last one looked bad, but I thought the dogfight looked awesome. And Berserker was purposefully CG because his weird rear end ability is supposed to make him look unnatural.

Hey would you guys mind helping me narrow down a rapidly ballooning watch list now that I'm about to finish all three animes I'm currently watching?

For context, here's what I've liked most according to my MAL ratings:

- Monster
- Devilman Crybaby
- Flip Flappers
- Girls' Last Tour
- A Place Further than the Universe

And here's what I've liked least:

- Haruhi Suzumiya
- Mawaru Penguindrum (dropped about 2/3 of the way in)
- Shin Sekai Yori (dropped about 1/3 of the way in)
- Fate/Apocrypha (dropped about halfway in)
- Violet Evergarden (dropped after a 3-episode test)

With that in mind, please recommend something off this list. My work schedule is pretty brutal, so watching any of these is likely gonna be a several-week commitment, even if I end up really adoring them:

- The Devil is a Part-Timer
- Kino's Journey (I'm led to believe that the 2003 one, not the recent one, is the correct one to watch?)
- Konosuba
- Little Witch Academia
- Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid
- Recovery of an MMO Junkie
- Space Patrol Luluco

Thanks so much in advance, guys

You can watch Luluco in an evening. The episodes are only 5 - 10 minutes long.

I would throw my hat into Konosuba. Despite a lot of the ecchi humor, the characters are just great. Though, you'll get a little more out of it if you have a history of playing fantasy RPGs.

I hear good things about Dragon Maid, too. But, I've never seen it.

Baccano arguably starts way too fast. The first episode is the chronological endpoint of most of the plotlines, and jumps between different time frames with extreme frequency (the show itself is actually like 3 plotlines that are each chronologically a year apart, being shown concurrently. Also, multiple key members of the cast appear in all 3 plotlines, in case you were wondering if this would get confusing at all)

It's a really confusing information overload coming at a time when you have the least ability to process any of it, due to not knowing any of the characters.

But it's also really, really, really good.

Personally I got like 3 episodes in, then re-watched the first episode like twice more to figure out what was going on in it. This isn't necessary though

One of those plotlines is a little more than a year removed from the others. :v:

Also, seconding that Penguindrum is not misery porn. It definitely lowers the characters into their own personal hell in the second half, but it isn't for nothing. And it does a good job bringing them back out by the end.

This is a slightly embarassing ask but... What are some of the best melodramatic maybe slightly trainwrecky "guilty pleasure" animes out there? Slightly "trashy" anime that's definitely not "a critic's choice" but entertaining to binge. Dramatic plot twists fit the type of show well.

I'd say the most obvious pick is Code Geass. Sword Art Online hits the spot too. Both include ridiculous power fantasies but that's not necessary. The protagonist coming into contact with powerful individuals/entities is almost preferable instead, honestly. Not sure I could stand them today but I guess Gundam SEED/Destiny fits the bill pretty well too.

edit: Currently airing reincarnated as a slime anime definitely does not fit the bill. The show has pretty much zero stakes from what I've watched.

I've actually watched Future Diary, and yeah it kinda fits the bill for sure.

Violet Evergarden? It has the melodrama down but doesn't really deal with any power fantasy tropes.

Coincidentally, I’m in the middle of a HxH rewatch and am in the middle of the Chimera Ant Arc. Pretty much everything everyone above said is spot on. There are a lot of points where you could tell the author had an idea that never really materialized, like when they spend half an episode narrating the NGL crime boss’ back story and nothing really comes of it. He also spends too much time on the dynamics of the colony trying to set up the internal conflicts when it isn’t really necessary. He got the same level of characterization out of the Phantom Troupe without all the fluff. (And Yorknew is still my favorite arc.)

Also, Palm is the most useless character, and I will never understand her purpose.

The arc did give us Knuckle and Morel though. :v:

A couple neat things come from keeping them around, but overall, it becomes kind of a slog mucking down the conflict with Meruem and his arc with Komugi and Pitou.
