In other crybaby news, big business is trying on the kidnap excuse for tax avoidance, but it's part of a bigger picture, says Jeffrey Knapp in a crosspost from The Conversation:

You'd think for people worried about being kidnapped that they would avoid talking about it in public. Some bright spark might think that it's actually a good idea. Wikipedia has a list of famous kidnappings and it turns out of the 5 Australians that were kidnapped, 2 were children, 1 woman, 1 faked and 1 winner of the opera house lottery in 1960. You'd think a wealthy businessperson would get a mention

So they are worried about some German serial ransomers setting up shop in Australia? As far as legislation for your political donors goes, this is some very selective reasoning.

Who knew that keeping refugees locked up on a remote Dr Evil island would be expensive.

No, a given island might be a hosed up place to live, but it is not prison camp.

This is exactly what they want to make you think.

Whatever facilities the camp provided will likely be gone, and they will be left to contend with the local residents (who like them even less than the guards). But at least they will be able to walk the couple thousand metres from one side of the island to the other!

It is just as poo poo, and the government is offloading whatever obligations they pretended to have in the first place. Wait until you hear from your reffo hating workmates about what a wonderful and humane gesture the government is making.

This is an insanely big loving change, I genuinely, genuinely don't understand the blase attitude all up in

I imagine it has something to do with a thread full of people keeping up to date on Australian politics. Don't forget this was a policy change masterminded by the Liberal Party and Tony Abbott. A politician with just enough intelligence to understand the word semiotics, and to occasionally use it in public interviews.

I somehow doubt that they have good intentions for these asylum seekers. The press release that emphasised an increase in police numbers, and having one liaison officer for every two asylum seekers. The extra surf life savers is the cherry on top because it certainly wouldn't look good for the politicians if asylum seekers wound up drowning themselves with freedom.

Did the Nauruan government make this policy change unilaterally?

The Nauru press release said that the Australian government's money train was the impetuous for this announcement.

Shorten demands Government help alleged Nauru rape victim seeking abortion

The Government must stop acting like "robots with no hearts" and allow a pregnant alleged rape victim to come to Australia for medical treatment, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten says.
Lawyers acting for the 23-year-old Somali woman say her pregnancy was the result of a "horrific" sexual assault in July and she is trying to reach Australia to get an abortion.

But the government promised more medical referrals for asylum seekers on Nauru this week. How.. how could this be.

The kind of work they're doing isn't ever going to yield a perfect strike rate. Intelligence agencies work off of limited information and then make the best judgement they can based upon it. We don't live in a perfect world where it's as simple as, "Theres the bad guys, let's get em". To expect that is just unrealistic.

If that's means sometimes a large operation is run with a small return then so what? If that's one or two people off the street who posed a genuine threat of doing something horrible then to me it's worth it.

You're happy to criticise the counter terrorism work our agencies are doing now. But I bet if something major happened you'd be the first to jump up and down screaming about them not doing enough.

You'd get a better strike rate finding lefty political forums, and raiding user's homes. Out of 100 users, there's probably at least 10 with drugs. And who knows, maybe one of them was reading radical political ideology about saving sharks, or climate change, or something.

Uhhh

how will people pay their rent under this system? even if the local real estate agent has an eftpos facility, it'd require physically going in and paying your rent at the office. What if you don't have access to reliable transport? Unless your rent is <20% of your payment, in which case, the entire system is still needlessly invasive and punitive.

NBN rollout plans have been updated apparently. Looks like I'm getting "HFC" in 1st half of 2017.

Whatever HFC is.

What a mess. If they are putting in (using existing) HFC, I don't even know why they are bothering with the NBN at all. Lets all pretend to look forward to another 30 years putting up with garbage Internet.
