As someone who's been in the "vote Sanders in the primary, Clinton in the general" camp since he declared, he's doing much better than I expected. Clinton +13 is still a big hurdle to overcome, but it's worlds better than the Clinton +55 of six months ago. More interesting to me though is, how are the candidates' ground games shaping up? I never see news stories on that, because Infrastructure is Boring, but it seems more important than raw cash on hand or early polling.

Just to be clear, that's two completely separate cases where the real murderer made up a story about being a hit man to get out of the death penalty, resulting in an innocent person being slated for execution, right? Kimber Edwards and Richard Glossip. Is this like police shooting unarmed black people, where it's been going on everywhere for a while but just now making it into the news?

Sounds like he's coming down with a case of the Jebs. Does he think people won't hammer him with this all through the general if he somehow survives the primary? Do his handlers think W's attempt to kill Social Security just wasn't cold-blooded enough? Christ.

I don't see Bernie as winning in the general, mostly because he'll get nailed about his use of the word Socialist and his lack of credible foreign policy experience. I'll be voting for him in any primary I can, but to me his entire purpose and where he shines is by bringing populist and left-leaning policies into the discussion, drawing whoever the Dem candidate is to the left of center.

I am worried that he seemed to be the only candidate at the debate that took climate change seriously, though.

This is pretty much where I stand on Bernie. I don't think he'd be effective at implementing his platform, but he can get more effective actors to implement some of it for him.

Was anyone else really impressed with O'Malley's performance? Out of the bottom three, I was impressed the most by him. I'm terrified of Webb.

O'Malley clearly practiced his winning smile, but kept doing it at inappropriate times, like when talking about victims of gun violence. But he was definitely the winner out of the bottom tier. Webb is a giant thumb with bad opinions and I don't understand why he's even running.

How do you think he bought his living arrangement in Russia? Do you really think that Vlad Putin helped him out because he has a soft spot for persecuted noble idealists?

It was a low-cost move that embarrassed the US.

Angling for a cabinet spot.

Do primary opponents really end up on the winner's cabinet all that often? Obviously there was Clinton at State under Obama, but she was already really prominent and there had to be an effort to show unity after a pretty contentious primary. Why give away a post to some wet fart just because he managed 0.8% of the vote in Iowa?

I'm kind of surprised people are getting hung up on this 10 hours thing, it's a pretty minor provision.

It's a difference between Hillary's and Bernie's plans, so we must holy war forever over it.

I have to say though, I liked Bernie's explanation of public tuition being an analogue to public education a hundred years ago.

Why? There's plenty of that kind of poo poo to go around. Various labs, libraries, etc., many of which can have extended hours if you assume a large student job need. Dorms need front desk staff as well. Also assume every single professor is given a minimum of three undergrad research assistants. Lab tech roles can exist for science and engineering majors as well.

Work/study availability is unlikely to be a sticking point - colleges have no problem finding ways to use that kind of labor.

Speaking as a grad student, why would you do this? What did we ever do to you? :( It's hard enough with one of them running around, any more than that and they'll start daring each other to eat the cadmium salts.

The dozens of offenders who showed up that day, old and young, filed out of the Perry County courthouse and waited their turn at a mobile blood bank parked in the street. They were told to bring a receipt to the clerk showing they had given a pint of blood, and in return they would receive a $100 credit toward their fines — and be allowed to go free.

[...]

Mr. Crocker said he grew even more uncomfortable later, after he recognized the blood bank, LifeSouth Community Blood Centers, which had recently lost a $4 million judgment for an H.I.V.-tainted blood transfusion.

[...]

Ms. Evans said that after receiving a complaint, LifeSouth quarantined and tested the blood, tried to contact all the donors and eventually discarded nearly all of the blood units collected.

[...]

However, Sara Zampierin, a lawyer at the Southern Poverty Law Center, said that in the handful of instances she reviewed of people who gave blood, none had received the $100 discount they had been promised.

Everything about this story is insane.

Yes, let's protect free speech by punishing professors for saying things we don't like, and fight Political Correctness by turning the Department of Education into the loving Politburo. :catstare:

Good god that debate. Trump was the only one who didn't propose some form of "burn the country down on our way out" SS/Medicare reform plan, the moderators had absolutely no control over what was going on to the point of fighting with each other when it was time to ask the next question, and I would have expected better and more polished commentary out of a podcast. And then they all agreed that the Democratic debate was silly.

so sum up the GOP debate for me. who did well, who did poorly, etc. did The Donald come out OK? what about Carson? did JEB! implode?

Jeb did nothing to contain the damage, and Donny and Ben didn't take any major hits. Kasich tried to land some blows and establish himself as the sane one, but it got him nowhere. Rubio will probably come out looking the best based on early-debate performance, so expect some more rallying around him by the establishment wing.
