I've liked two other urobouchi outings but usually I like the characters better.

I watched more gaim.

Past episode 20, the plot becomes INSANE and far more Urobouchi, so I've warmed up to it despite not liking Kouta or Kaito.

I'm getting the sense that this is the Kamen Rider version of Deep Space 9.
DS9 got a mixed reception of high praise on its own terms and scorn from fans for 1) being more serialized than previous trek (which Gaim kinda is instead of being two part stories) 2) Handling more difficult situations where there was no right answer 3) Having good characters end up doing the wrong thing and living with it, going against the vision of the larger series.
(um wait, also it's about a community based around a wormhole and exploring the new world in it. and the series has local political conflicts while slowly revealing a main threat beyond the wormhole...:crossarms:)

problem is Kouta is not The Sisko, there is no The Sisko so far.
actually I'm kind of getting the feeling I'm supposed to hate him.

also forget any of the collectibles, I want all the juices and parfaits from this show.

Color me a bit surprised, but I thought the plot had already gotten going by episode 20 because by then you've learned the secret of Helheim and Kaitou is recruited by Ryoma. And Micchy's... started really becoming scum. It isn't that into the plot I guess, but the episodes were already very serial by then.

turnaround is mainly because the helheim forest is not that surprising. episode 21 reveals project ark and it's loving nuts.

yggdrasil is basically far more interesting than the protagonists and seeing what they do is what I'm watching for.

episode 28,29 of gaim, the Urobouchi-ing is intensifying hard. Schemes are hatched, characters are being betrayed, huge fight scenes between multiple riders are going on, everything's pretty good and then at the end
whir stomp whir stomp hey look it's who-gives-a-poo poo-bot/pepsi can man that has gently caress all to do with anything
ahhhh gently caress

Yeah I've seen go busters but this is worse, at least with Space Cowboy Gary had the decency to wait until the show was between plots instead of this poo poo

I kinda feel like I'm prying open scabs when gaimposting, the discussions over this show must have been pretty heated during its run. I won't be watching for a few days, but I'd like to at least air one of my questions.
I'm longposting, but more as a Gen Urobouchi fan/defender and less from the toku standpoint.

I'm not sure I entirely get Kaito and Kouta. They feel like strawmen of their respective archetypes.
Now Toku is no stranger to one-d characters, even one-d leads (this is so HOT, I'm getting FIRED up)
But Gen writes as he will no matter the assignment. Both Madoka and fate/zero had characters I could understand and get what they were feeling and doing. And that kinda sorta continues here - I'm not feeling most of the characters but most of them are interesting and pretty natural.
Kaito and Kouta are not natural.
Hell the OVERLORDS feel like more natural and nuanced characters , and I think that's my first big mark of confusion.

Kaito as the guy who wants strongness is a normal kamen rider kinda guy but I just do not feel like some even in this setting could have a past that leads them to be a guy who talks and acts like Kaito does (about strength. All. The. Time. He's worse than Worf and his Honor). I guess he fits in better once the story gets more epic in scope, though.

Kouta. What the hell is wrong with Kouta. I liked Madoka as a character. I liked lots of other friendship powered heroes. I liked Gentaro from Fourze. What makes Kouta worse? I think part of it is that he's actually pretty inconsiderate in a way that's not just bumbling, and doesn't so much overcome obstacles as finally cave to what people were trying to tell him to do all along.

But on the former... see, Madoka and Gentaro when their friends were having issues tried to understand them. Kouta when he finds out how batshit his friend is and has been, he makes up this weird narrative/assigned motivation for him and he sticks to it and so far has not learned that thing he made up is completely wrong.

Basically they're both the worst characters but at this point in the series I get the feeling that Gen knew exactly how he was writing these
characters and knew how they would come off to viewers. I'm just kinda not getting why.

I can already say that Drive is my absolute favorite of the neo hesei kamen riders. Yes, I've seen them all but Wizard and Gaim. I've been watching these for a year or more, just not posting about them.
I hold Drive to a different standard than Gaim. Gaim's big deal was being a Gen Urobouchi show. However, Drive surpassed my standards big time.
It may not be innovating the show that much or do much different but everything it did was superb.
I do like Gaim so far, and I'd probably rank it pretty high on audacity alone. But as a Gen show it does not beat out Madoka or fate/zero just yet.

seems like they're going with a lighter series after gaim and drive. I doubt there will be sympathy for the ganma like the overlords and roidmudes had.

I've finished Gaim.

Ending is a little "that's it?". Madoka and Fate/Zero both had extremely complete stories with epic conclusions, even if you add in Rebellion, at least for me. And most of the characters have complete arcs I guess, but the way the Helheim threat is defeated does not cap off the story well from either a story or emotional perspective. At least if I understand it. It's like... just sending everything to another planet? That's all you need to do to stop a helheim?

What bothers me about it is... well, why didn't the civilization the overlords came from do that? The king was trying to stop the helheim invasion. What did he try to do?

It doesn't bother me from a character point of view that Helheim continues. The story did not provide any way to deal with the threat in a permanent way. I think the story is weaker for it, though. I mean, at least in Madoka and Rebellion the cycle of hurt continues but it's been altered. And I think you could say a bit of the same for Fate/Zero at the very least there's stuff set up for the next battle - yes, it's a prequel to a story I'll probably never bother reading but at the very least it felt like the bloody war that nobody won and cost so much still would affect the next one.

Really this ending felt like it wasn't the one that was planned. I don't know that and I don't know if anyone does, but it just FELT that way to me.

I think in a way the story felt watered down even if you remove that horrible soccer episode that made no sense at all and the android episode.
Like beyond those, tying how well people fight to which toys they own meant that many of the riders besides Kouta stagnated in progress until they found a loophole for Kaito.

I've got a lot of thoughts about Gaim but I've gone on long enough, and though I was disappointed with some parts of the series it did turn out to be a worthwhile watch just for how loving audacious it was. The other two stories I mentioned have invisible wars that only the characters know about, here were get the entire loving world involved and it's great. And I don't know of a toku series that has as many beatdowns on unsuited humans as this one.

The problem is one of the other two Urobouchi series is about Magical Girls and the other has its origins in a porny visaul novel, I had hoped to have a really Urobouchi series to show people without caveats to worry about. Not only is this not the best Urobochi series, I kind of feel like it can't really reach someone who hasn't watched other Toku because of how much stylistic fluff there is that would probably be confusing and silly instead of cool.

---
unrelated: How do toys that "scan" things like the ooo scanner and the wizard belt work. Are there little magnets in the medals or something, I'm confused.

have not watched zyuranger but i've read wiki articles and it's amazing just how much poo poo started with that show. It's like sentai didn't gradually evolve into having animal mecha that combine into a person mecha that gets bigger and bigger with more mecha, that it didn't gradually get away from being kind of a spy show with an organization sending out a small elite squad to deal with the current empire of rubber suits.

So many new things at once seem to start with Zyuranger, but that's kinda an outside perspective. Really most things from before Kamen Rider W/Shinkenger I've tried to watch just don't stick and seem so weird that I'm not sure what's happening or where it's going. Dairanger seems nice enough though, I've always liked that second adventure with the monster that steals kids souls and puts them in puppets that hold guns and shoot people and hit people with cars. That's neat. But what's the deal with Kakuranger, who is this old geezer, why are their frames of sound effects written in marker, what the gently caress is going on, what is loving happening even.

Didn't he summon the ghost of Ticket, though? I don't want Ticket to do a heel turn :ohdear:

Gramps turning evil would be a pretty good twist, though. Thinking about it, I think there's a pretty good probability of "Gramps was working for Ganma all along" or "Gramps was instrumental in creating or discovering the Ganma, and feels bad about it", though the latter is maybe too similar to Mr. Belt.

Ticket ghost wanted to just watch the girl die to get the toy eyeball, all gramps has loving done is send ghost to get more toy eyeballs and hasn't given any pep talks or anything and has actively evaded giving any reasons for anything. At this point I'll be disappointed if they're playing "eccentric mentor + naive student" straight, because like people have said there's a lot of punch missing from this poo poo otherwise.

Kamen Rider often has some kind of self hatred going on with its collectables since the theme is that they use the power of evil. W they abstract things they wanted kids to buy were actively DRUGS, OOO they were from creatures literally called Greeeeds, Gaim they were from a Hell Forest and used to shift blame from an inevitable end of the world onto innocent bystanders... it would be neat if there was some judgement cast on collecting toy eyeballs too. There has to be something to, this season, the rider seeming to be the same exact thing as a monster of the week.

And so many questions seem to be brought up and begging the viewer to wonder about them (who's bad teeth guy, what's with the monolith, etc) that I doubt they don't intentionally want the sage to at least look sketchy.

Bottom line either sage is an rear end in a top hat or this series sucks.

Then a couple episodes later said device was made completely obsolete when the old man simply gave them a superior alternative. But then, much like the monk her role probably isn't based on her interests at all. She snatched that eyecon last episode like a boss, and seems to be Takeru's primary emotional support. In other words, Akari's guts are more relevant than her smarts.

Really it looks like this knows it's a children's show. That's fine. I find it really charming and I do not buy sentai stuff anyway.

It looks a lot like toQger, with everything for the heroes being simple, striking, colorful, and fun to look at. But last episode was kind of waaaaaay too soon to pull the "OK I trust you and will now actually tell you the plotACK I DIED" trope. It's kind of hilariously lame.

(I also kind of wish ghost would do more with its spooky ghosts theme, toqger and drive were so wonderfully on point with trains and cars. Nothing feels all that ghostly here. Kind of hope the GHOST DIMENSION will make the ganma feel just a little more like ghosts)

Don't really care about the hero selection, famous dead people as powers is pretty much the only ghost themed thing here.

Also, we know mr. scaryteeth, makato's, and takeru's motivations but it's implied that sage, alan, javel ALL have seperate and highly secret plans for the 15 eyeballs.

that's probably right about aran and javel, still put them at slightly differing sides if they aren't quite working together and sharing all their notes, and I kind of thought the ganma were just being commanded by bad teeth

but for sage, he did mutter some mysterious poo poo at bad teeth at takeru instead of being a goofy goober. Seems to be dissapointed at Takeru for not bringing himself back, commented that "he'll be an old man" if he has to wait for him? and that he wasn't paying attention to how many eyeballs bad teeth had but that he cannot accomplish what he intendeds to without a belt?

at the very least he might not be nefarious like I thought he might be but he's differently playing a game and has his own desires here.
My own guess is that he wants to incarnate into Takeru's revived body.

As for badteeth, Necrom's identity has not been leaked, but my money is on that guy. He's a ghostologist and much smarter than sage, so he probably knows that he'd SHOULD need a belt but may have built an alternative, and Necrom's gear is supposedly super science substitutes for the usual. yknow, I think I can forgive the time reset.

takeru was in kind of an abstract peril, and even the characters themselves thought gramps might just be full of poo poo. well, at least when they were trying to find a slim little bit of hope to hold on to after all other hope was lost. (yeah i admit, that scene where onari marks the last day and then goes off to cry made me a lil sad :smith:). now we know exactly what takeru is up against and what will happen if he fails.

plus a mentor figure used a similar lie to manipulate the player character into accomplishing a needed goal in a game i liked, so i was always thinking that's how it would go here.
