Probably £25 here, I think DS2 Record Breaker is gonna have to wait.

Given FC is $20/£13, the same conversion puts SC at £19.50, so about £20 for SC seems more likely (plus Akiba's Trip was published by XSEED on Steam and is $30/£20).

While I liked TitS FC a lot and consider A Good Game, the combat system kind of felt barebones and leaving a fair amount to be desired. Also felt easy throughout, even with maintaining battle difficulty after losing I don't think I lost more than once to an encounter. Is SC better in that regard? I'm going to get it anyway, but it would make me happy if it had more complex combat.

Apparently it has a new system for chaining crafts (so you can have characters go one after another with their crafts, the later their go the more powerful the craft), and has rebalanced things a little so physical attackers are a bit better to use than they were in FC. Beyond that, no idea, hopefully someone who's played the game can chime in.

People may want to validate their game on Steam after the latest patch. Got the patch and the game started running choppily, so I figured I'd check if the hardware vertex shading option had turned itself off in the config, except Steam wouldn't launch the config. Checked the game files, and sure enough the config executable had disappeared. Validating files has gotten it back though, but I don't know if it's fixed my performance issues yet.

EDIT: Nope, still getting framedrops. Hopefully it's fixed soonish.

Finished chapter 8 of SC just now. Holy balls that was so good. Definitely can't wait until I'm done with the whole thing!

On a less positive note, I'm pretty sure the only BP I've missed through the whole game has been 2BP from the prologue from answering one of the questions incorrectly. :( At least it apparently doesn't change much!

So Chapter 8 is awesome but (ending of it) how the gently caress is Dorothy's camera working? Somehow this is the thing that's standing out the most, not all the badass poo poo.

Pretty sure when you see her and Nial in the city, Nial specifically tells her to take as many pictures as she can and to use 'as much film as we can stuff in there' or something. Given that later, on the shielded ship where her camera presumably works, he's calling it 'photo-quartz' rather than film, she was probably using an older, non-orbal model earlier.

Currently in the middle of Chapter 9. I'd really love to have a funnier party (i.e. Olivier and Josette), but I'm enjoying blowing stuff away with Agate and Kloe too much to bother leveling the others up.

I found Estelle best as an all-rounder/defensive tank. Gave her enough stuff to have a reasonable variety of arts to be able to fill in for any position in an emergency (so if I need to heal and my healer's turn isn't coming up for a while or somesuch), as well as plenty of defense and movement, so she's unlikely to go down and can run around with items to help the others out if necessary. With that setup, she can also do respectable damage when she needs to - although of course nowhere near Agate/Zane levels - but is mainly there to assist my more specialised party members into fulfilling their own roles as best they can. Plus she's got some useful crafts for hitting a bunch of enemies at once, or knocking several away to clear the field a bit. About the only disappointment is a lack of AT Delay crafts, but I've got other characters for that, I guess.

Finally finished SC. That was really, really excellent. End of chapter 8 was definitely the high point for me I reckon, what with everyone's plans coming together in one place, revelations about Olivier, etc. That was quite a bit to be hit with all at once, and the game pulled it off well.

Localisation was top-notch throughout, and I was left constantly lamenting the fact that I wasn't able to have all the characters with me at all times (especially Olivier, whenever he left the party), just to see how they'd react to everything. Massive thanks to everybody who spent so long working on it. :)

Here's hoping we eventually see the rest of them!

By the way, I used that one, and while it appears to be mostly right, it's wrong in one or two places I noticed. All that comes to mind at the moment was that it had one of the answers for the Sunday School quest wrong, and I think didn't bother to mention the bonus BP you could get for the fight with Gilbert. Just said you had to survive the fight to get full BP, but I think you have to actually win.

Well, that one was pretty much down to luck. It seemed that pretty much any time I got any of them down to vaguely lowish health , two or more of them would immediately spawn another, and it was just completely unmanageable if you didn't manage to kill nearly all of them immediately. Others had it so that they enemies just didn't bother spawning any others, and had no trouble at all. One fight I do hear complaints about that I personally had no issue at all with was the (Chapter 9 boss spoilers) Lorence fight.

Well, the quality may not necessarily matter too much, considering how much the current PC releases have been improved from the original versions they were adapted from. There's a chance any problems with them could be fixed, provided they're not completely horrendous. However, god knows what the rights issues with them are as regards getting a hold of them to release them here. Maybe they'd be fairly easy to get, but I'd doubt it.

If you have a poke about on the Steam forums for FC you're likely to find a few different things to try, but as I recall, the Hardware Vertex Shader setting (or whatever it was called, can't check right now) was usually a troublemaker, so try enabling/disabling that. If it's not that or some other setting in the configuration tool, then you could try verifying the files in Steam, but if that doesn't solve it then I'd have no idea.

(Could also be the intro videos causing trouble, which can also be disabled in the configuration tool)

Finished Cold Steel earlier today. That was excellent! They sure didn't hold back with things going high-stakes towards the end though, holy hell. I'd been spoiled on one or two things but there were still a hell of a lot of surprises left, so it hardly mattered. Also, wow, I was really surprised at the length of the game. Was likely just me being slow, but it still took me even longer than SC, which I hadn't expected at all. Thoroughly looking forward to the next one, whenever it comes out this year.

I imagine Cold Steel 2 sticks with using the character models for the faces during dialogue? Unlikely though it is, I'd sorta hope not. There was nothing particularly wrong with using the models for that stuff, but I couldn't help but think that the portraits used in FC and SC were far more expressive and fun.

Besides, I get the feeling that, even if we knew SC's exact sales now, we wouldn't get a real feel for how it's doing for another few months. A fair few people were waiting for SC to come out before they started FC, plus I imagine there's some people who only actually heard of the series at all when SC came out. I dunno how much difference it'll make in the end, but there's bound to be a decent amount of people who'll buy SC later in the year once they've finished FC.

And we're getting Cold Steel 2 regardless, so at the very least there's that.

Yeah, it really depends how much time you spend walking around talking to NPCs and doing sidequests and such. I did a whole bunch of that so it took me about 75 hours. If you're not doing all that then about 60 or so, maybe a little less?

Regarding voice-acting in Trails, the only problem I'd have with it, for the Sky games at least, is that it'd slow the cutscenes down a whole bunch, and I quite enjoy how quick and snappy the games are. Definitely enjoyed all the acting in Cold Steel a whole bunch though, so it's hardly a big deal.

I very rarely bother with 100%ing games. Something I've done once or twice for games I really really enjoyed, like P4G and FC, but even then I just try to go for all the achievements or sidequests or something rather than a proper 100%. I enjoyed playing FC again and doing all the quests, but I'm not gonna be arsed to speak to every NPC every time to see all the changes.

Also, a lot of the game gives you subcharacters, and you can switch characters out mid-combat, so if you really want to play the game to its fullest you're dealing with 6 or 7 man parties, not 4. In a fresh Hard run I did a ton of switching mid-combat.

I was an idiot and kept completely forgetting I could do this, so was usually pretty much sticking with 4-man parties throughout the entire game, aside from a couple of occasions.

I guess it would depend on the resolution of the screen. 1920x1080 on a tiny screen might make the text kind of hard to read, but I suppose you could always just lower the resolution of the game or something to force the text to be larger, if things work that way. Also, FC/SC had a 'boost font size' option on the config for people playing on TVs and stuff, so you could probably try that, too.

In an RPG like this, there will always be a best and most optimal strategy anyway. I don't mind there being ridiculously broken things in the game when you can just choose not to use them. Some would probably see broken strategies existing as valuable, too, as it's fun to stumble onto such things randomly while playing and then feeling really good about yourself.

This was pretty much how I felt while playing. Looking at some item or quartz and idly thinking "You know, if I used this with this other thing, that could be pretty broken!", then giving it a go and finding that yes, this combination was indeed incredibly broken was good fun. Encouraged me to explore the combat system a bit more than finding one thing that worked and sticking with it, since I knew that there was probably some way to exploit whatever thing I decided to try.

I guess he stepped in to help out Joshua and Estelle when rescuing Pat and Luke (might have those names wrong...) right at the beginning of FC, and if you really want to stretch the definition of 'on-screen' then I suppose he technically was the one who sent Zane to help out. Pretty much everything else sans the final boss bit was indirect - Morgan/Richard/everyone talking about him, receiving that package that was meant for him, etc.

I realize this is a big ask but it would be nice if Cold Steel had different scenes after a boss fight depending on how it went. In the practical exam for chapter 6 they played it up big like oh no, gotta challenge Sara, shes so strong, but the battle went

Rean -> Use battle scope
Laura -> 200cp S-Craft (with her auto str buff and domination orb)
BATTLE END

and the next scene is everyone going huff puff wow we barely scraped by that one! Yikes!

To be fair, all of the Trails games seem to have this exact problem. It's hardly a Cold Steel-exclusive issue. I don't really know how much of an ask it would be to add that though, since there's not that many bosses. Adding some kind of check for if the battle was less than a certain number of turns and nobody dropped to low health during it, then changing the resulting lines slightly doesn't seem like a huge amount of trouble.

It's nice at least that the rest of the cast aren't idiots and clearly know she's hiding something, and are just nice enough to not bother her about it, which'd be fine if not for the fact that the game rubs her mysteriousness in your face all the bloody time. We get it, there's stuff we don't know about Emma, but if we weren't going to find out much about it until CS2, there was no need for it to be brought up anywhere near as much as it was.
