"It bored me so much I couldn't get through these episodes" is a valid review if it's upfront like that. There were reviews like that for Bojack Horseman and it didn't invalidate the people who stuck with it and found that the long buildup paid off.

Has she never heard of the New Deal? Do people like this just selectively forget parts of history or do they just invent entire new ones that fit their narrative?

the New Deal was meant to alleviate suffering enough to curtail popular support for socialism and enable the government to more effectively dismantle domestic movements. it was progressive out of perceived necessity but it was absolutely not socialist.

cw: transphobia, misogyny. this person whines about trans women competing in sports and is asked to name trans women who have received the gold medal since they've been allowed to compete. this is their answer

You don't care about segregation. You don't care about Clarence Thomas. The only thing you care about is giving yourself an excuse not to participate. That's the only principle you actually hold. There's something deeply comforting about nihilism. You can just pull it around yourself like a nice warm blanket, and watch the rest of us struggle onward without you.

You'll be fine under Trump. Other people will suffer, but you won't. You know nothing really matters. Go ahead and sit this one out.

I love when this thread has live content :tipshat:

Just because folks realize electoralism is rigged bunk doesn't make them nihilists, local community organizing will do more for people in need than electing a slightly more tepid monster ever will.

This is kind of an interesting thought process to me. I hate the direction they took with it, trying to say that "sex denialism" is harmful to women. But I wonder if we, as a whole society, didn't define people so much by their genitals, and just let people be however they naturally are, without regards to their gender, would true transgenderism still exist? Like for example if "feminine boys" were just another person without any kind of stigma. I think it would still exist. I think there are definitely people that have that feeling of truly needing to be the other gender. But it's an interesting thought as I just wonder if as many people would fully transition if our whole society was not based on what gender you were born as in the first place and if people just were people. I can see how that could lead to people delegitimizing trans issues through that thought process though. Like, do you reaaallllyyy need to change your genitals or hormones? Well, sure, if that's what you really want. But how much of that desire is just to please society and not just yourself? I'm a cis woman so I'm sorry if what I'm saying is ignorant. I want to learn and I do support the right to be trans. In society as it is now. But what if things were different? Would transgenderism even be needed?

I dunno where I'm going with this really but it just kind of made me think of gender under a different perspective and I found it an interesting thought. Anyway it's kind of moot as it's not like gender can just disappear from society, not in our lifetime at least.

Nah.

Body dysphoria is real and can be devastatingly strong, that wouldn't just go away.

There is no "true transgenderism", ugh, just a massive spectrum of experiences.

Eliminating the categorizations of "masculine" girls and "effeminate" boys and just letting them be would be great, but that has nothing to do with being trans.

it wasn't a twitter screenshot, it was someone ITT posting elaborate theorycraft on the secret true nature of trans. people were very reasonably like "don't do that" and then every greasy transphobe left on these dead gay forums took turns explaining why actually it's important to educate people who gainsay your lived experience, and after that it's a big hazy mess of awful closeted bigotry and justified-but-fruitless indignation

"if we're upsetting you, you could just leave, honey :)" is a moderation standard with a very negative track record, if you hadn't noticed

what bothers me is that it wasn't just a cascade of "no, gently caress off", plenty of people gave answers, terse or no, including me. if trans folks can live in existential fear cis folks can deal with a little snark while still ultimately being educated!

Just because I was curious, I typed "would transgender people exist if there were no gender roles" into Google to see what a self-educating person would find. One of the top results is a loving Quillette article.

maybe the dichotomy you present is a false one and instead of making GBS threads up this thread with their questions "allies" can take a quote of what made them think of their topic of discussion to a more appropriate thread for such a discussion
