LordSaturn posted:These are so much better than anything else he does. He should go back to doing these full-time. The early 9CL strips aren't too bad either. It's hard to point to the precise moment when he declared himself King Pretentious of GamsVille.

I picked up one of the Titan Books Modesty Blaise reprints recently. The art does look a little different on glossy paper, I think the scans here may be closer to how the strips actually read back in the day.

Oh no. It's Schoedsack, because it's Marian C. Cooper, see, and Merian C. Cooper and Ernest Schoedsack were the makers of King Kong and this is the stupidest possible context in which to make that reference.

What I like is that every 9CL storyline goes on for what feels like ten years. This is rambling as much as the WWII grandmother plotline or whatever the gently caress that was.

JaggerMcDagger posted:Dustin You're loving mangling this joke, argh. I can't find the Jack Benny Show bit I once read about, but it went like this: "I once pitched a no-hit game!" "What was the score?" "Twenty-six to zero. We lost." "How is that possible?" "I had no hits, but ho boy did I walk them!" Still not the greatest joke, you have to tell it with an exaggerated Catskills accent, but you get the idea.

The poster is from Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, Harryhausen's first big solo feature. Yeah so far this strip is a bunch of classic movie references in search of anything happening at all.
