Ariong posted:Oh man, I didn't even consider ghost shenanigans! Okay, if Griffin can come up with a robust and interesting ghost system that allows the dead player to still contribute after death, then maybe I could see character death becoming more of a thing. Heck, then you could actually make getting the stuff to resurrect them a mini-quest in itself, since the person being revived wouldn't have to just sit it out.

John Chase of Chase Banks was really, really good. There was another loathsome-voiced Griffin character in the past 20 but it wasn't as good as this. Those dirty stacks tho

Travis's new podcast Shmanners dropped. First ep isn't anything exciting but his wife is a pretty solid podcaster so far. I'll admit that the subject matter is a bit niche- I myself only took interest in etiquette after I got engaged. This might be one where you pick and choose the subjects that interest you. Still Buffering's recently dropped as well, that's next in the playlist. Seems like it might have wider appeal.

Scudworth posted:found Still Buffering to be incredibly incredibly dull but I'm ruined from listening to Don't Ever Change so much, which is nothing but crazy/stupid high school stories, and a podcast I recommend. Shmanners will probably never be funny but it seems pretty firmly staked in being primarily interesting/informational instead. All that being said, I'll say that Rileigh is doing a better job podcasting than I ever could have at her age.

Wake_N_Bake posted:Yeah, as a white dude in his 30s, Still Buffering doesn't appeal to me at all. There was a recent segment on This American Life with teenage girls describing their Instagram habits. It was insufferable. Given their lineup, I have to believe I represent a majority of MaxFun's demographic, it'll be interesting to see how it does. Rose Buddies is treating me pretty right for someone who doesn't watch the Bachelor. I did watch Burning Love so I guess I have enough of the genre's grammar from that. It doesn't hurt that Griffin seems to be the McElroy who doesn't dial it down around his wife. New Adventure Zone just dropped, also.

It's kind of remarkable that between the McElroys and the Smerls that baby Charlie has a fairly conventional (spelled) name. I'm assuming at least. I guess I wouldn't be surprised if the birth cert said "Tschärlleegh".

defectivemonkey posted:Podcasts are a weirdly personal thing and don't get too sad if someone doesn't like the one you like. For example, I really like Judge John Hodgman at its outset, but after the first hundred episodes or so I now only listen to the docket-clearing episodes regularly. For Sawbones, ONRAC or Flophouse I tend to pick and choose based on whether the episode's subject matter appeals to me. I liked Bunker Buddies at first but it fell off after they burned through the initial material; I needed an indefinite break. On the other hand Still Buffering started very slow but got a paradigm shift once they brought on another regular host that I feel improved the dynamic quite a bit, making it a true My Sister, My Sister & Me without just being a MBMBaM ripoff. For what it's worth, I feel like JJGo and SPY are just really consistently good at this point but they are both very long-running shows that are easy to dive into at any point (as is MBMBaM). There's no wrong way to listen to podcasts, really. Some of them benefit more from completionist listening (Adventure Zone) but you could just skip arcs if you're not feeling it. I am also a weirdo who listens to every podcast at 1.5x (with Overcast's Smart Speed) by default. The ads, though... yeah. I'd rather have (unimpressive) Switcheroos like quarterly rather than listen to any further MaxFun show ads.

I like the rapport between Travis and Teresa, and they both have a very particular energy. Episode-wise, the Casinos one is pretty good, as is the Travel: Boats and Planes. Also, Travis recently addressed that the show isn't spelled with a "c", because then it would be pronounced "ska-manners", and I am looking forward to how very wrong he will have to admit being. Maybe on a Mea Culpa/Admitting Your Mistakes episode.

I'm still catching up on TAZ and right now the only ones I consistently listen to each week as they're released is MBMBaM, Rose Buddies, and Interrobang. greatn posted:Is there much difference between Interrobang and Trends Like These? TLT is very much a pseudo-informational reaction to pop-culture type show, where ?! is more personal/emotional and only sometimes touches pop culture. The shows are about the hosts' baseline approach to the world, and you can only relate how much you relate. ?! is more about the hosts' stories as well. Finding out more as the show goes on tends to either pull you in or push you out, accordingly. Neither show is "funny" which does nothing to slow the train from coming off the tracks, once you feel like that's started.

Asiina posted:I think Tybee nailed it at the end of last week's Interrobang that they've gotten a little off track in that they're just bitching and not really coming to any meaningful conclusions. The last few episodes have felt less like "let's have an honest conversation about difficult topics" and more "man this very specific thing happened to me and it pissed me off". They do seem to realize it though, so hopefully they can turn it around, cause I do like them both and I liked their early conversations. I've felt really engaged with the show enough to actually have pretty long twitter conversations with Tybee about topics. I'll probably stick with them a bit longer if they can turn things around a bit. In fairness, it's been buck wild for Travis for the past couple months and if any show is going to be affected by that it's ?!
