As someone who served in the peacetime airforce in a REMF/POG as heck job, my advice to anyone trying to steal themselves some valor is to keep it simple. Instead of saying you were a recon sniper SEAL Green Beret, say you were like a hull technician in the navy (your apartment handy man, but in a boat), or a "corrosion control specialist" (airplane painter)/"loadmaster"(cargo airplane box-putter-onner) in the Air Force. No one will care enough to question it, and you can scam your veteran discount from Stuckey's or whatever without some guy way too proud of mustering out as a terminal lance with a million motto tatoos waving a camera in your face to shame you on Youtube.

A young Second Lieutenant approaches the crusty old CSM and asked about the origin of the commissioned officer insignias. The CSM replied, "It's history and tradition ... First we give you a gold bar representing that you are very valuable and also malleable. The silver bar also represents significant value, but is less malleable. When you make Captain, your value doubles, hence the two silver bars. As a Colonel you soar over military masses, hence the eagle. As a General, you are, obviously, a star. Does that answer your question?" "Yes," said the Second Lieutenant, "but what about Majors and Lieutenant Colonels?" "That goes waaaay back in history ... to the Garden of Eden even.
