I like how he describes these problems and the solution is always just to do the stupidest, Doomiest thing ever. Guitar doesn't sound rough enough? Morph it with a chainsaw. Need a little more oomph with that bass line? Add in 666.

edit: Cyber Torso dude reminds me a lot of the Sarge/Sabaoth from Doom 3, which is cool. He had a pretty good design.

Also we didn't see it but I hope the Slayer still has a BFG. Ain't Doom without a BFG.

It should be noted that the original Doom wasn’t one floor/all flat. It supported different vertical levels, so maps like Doom 2’s Downtown have plenty of vertical movement. There’s lots of lifts/stairs/balconies/whatever in Doom. What Doom didn’t support was multiple things at different vertical levels in the same space. So you can’t have rooms directly over other rooms, like someone pointed out. You can’t walk under a flying monster like a cacodemon.

In contrast Wolfenstein 3D, iD’s previous fps, has no verticality at all. It also has its levels plotted on a large grid, so everything is only one flat level and made up of square spaces. Doom allowed for a lot more creative level design, which helps a lot.

Doom does still have sprites as enemies/objects though, that is correct. Modern day updates to the Doom engine (called sourceports) can change pretty much any restriction of Doom I noted above.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eDjo6VjqsY

If anything the crazier parts of Doom 2016 were way more intense. The footage of Doom: Eternal where the doomguy is flying all over the place and grappling with demons and dash jumping and glory killing is way more fast paced

There’s far more intense things in the official Doom releases. This is from Final Doom, so it was officially released and runs on the original Doom engine. It’s the origin of what are called slaughtermaps, maps full of tons of enemies for you to overcome.

https://youtu.be/wCGeNNvG0Z4

If you’re ideologically opposed to slaughtermaps for some reason (and you shouldn’t be, they’re incredible) here’s John Romero’s incredible Perfect Hatred from Ultimate Doom:

I'm willing to bet the dodge is a console/bad player crutch, at least partially. It's a lot harder for the Slayer to dodge everything when you're using a control stick. It might also be for increased air play, in conjunction with the grappling hook. It looks like there's a lot more emphasis on verticality, and a dash helps a lot for that.

It was only really bad if you played the ***XBOX 1 PORT*** because they did this thing where even before it was added to the PC version, the XBOX port loads everything as you play like Half-Life 1 does. So you know you're going along, periodically the game stops to say Loading, and then you go on your way.

But those sections are a little on the Half-Life 1 side size since they were working with the original XBOX, so when you're in the vehicle sections you get regular loading timeouts basically every time you turn your head more than 90 degress. :wtc:

Yeah honestly I should try replaying HL2 again, since my best experience with it was on the PS3, which...wasn't great.

This gives me a cool idea, why don’t we have any foes that are as eager and capable of demon murder as we are. Something like a baron, but bigger comes out grinning and thrashing other demons and laughing on its way to get its hands on you. The more you hurt it, the faster and more damage it deals. Doom has the best demon designs but some of that is wasted because none of them have the ability to really intimidate you.

Some of the Eternal previews look a lot like that very idea to me. Isn’t the baron of hell introduced in 2016 by it tearing apart a group of imps?
