There was a mishap in the UK today at a power station being demolished. Sounds like the explosives went off early, 1 dead and 3 missing.

Pics and videos, nothing graphic.

It seems that there is a fair bit of prep work as well. They don't just blow it up all willy nilly, they prep the structure to weaken it in key areas. Reduces the amounts of explosives needed, helps ensure it collapses in the desired fashion/direction, etc.

The West Texas fertilizer plant explosion has been determined to be a criminal act by the BATF and the Texas State Fire Marshall's office... they basically said it was a deliberate act that cause the fire and eventual explosion.

Yeah they managed to stop the emergency spillway by dumping 100,000cfs down this all day and night

Their current plan is to try and drain the water fast enough that they can then try and repair both damaged spillways before the water rises back up to the emergency spillway again.

I assume before the rains all next week.

During the news conference the one guy answering questions said "There might be more erosion on the main spillway" so the pictures tomorrow should look interesting.

Yea... the main spillway is ruined anyways, so I think they are better off just using it for now. It's a far better idea than allowing the auxiliary spillway to continue eroding the dam itself

Hopefully they can cancel the evacuation orders if things are stable enough

The concrete spillway had repairs performed on it in 2013 and at that time they state that they did not see anything else amiss.

I said lack of maintenance and use, as in the spillway hasn't been maintained because it hasn't been in use. This is the first time the water has even reached the spillway since 2012 or something.

As I noted earlier, repairs were made on the spillway in 2013, so I don't think lack of maintenance is an actual reason here.

So what happens with something like that, I mean, there's not much to recover I imagine. Does the insurance company just pay out and it lies there for whoever to do whatever with? Or is the owner responsible for removing it?

Whenever it gets stormy here (lol socal, so never) a few sailboats inevitably wash up on local beaches, then just sit there until the earth claims them again.

Insurance will pay for its removal. If no one did anything, the municipality would contract out removal and pursue the owner to recover costs in addition to fining the poo poo out of them.

Same thing happens when some idiot loses their truck through thin ice on a lake... insurance pays for removal or the DNR puts the owner in a world of poo poo.

If poo poo has actually hit the fan your odds are bad in a plane no matter who or what is driving. You realize that Sully landing the plane on the Hudson River was very unusual right? If a person is capable of selecting a landing spot, so could a computer. Your objections are valid and will need to be addressed, but it doesn't mean that computer pilots are an overall bad idea and not going to happen.

poo poo goes wrong all the time on commercial flights, but we never hear about it because most of the failures have well established routines for dealing with them, and of course redundant systems.

There's a whole host of YouTube channels that post ATC recordings and this poo poo happens every few days. Engine failures, electrical issues, bird strikes, lightning strikes in air, whatever. What happens next is the human pilot lands the plane safely and no one really gives a poo poo except aviation nerds.
