The Russian side never moved one inch from their position, so there was no way of creating a compromise the governments of France and Germany could live with. (Those two were directly mentioned, could be others were involved too, or I may have skimmed over some of the smaller, less important countries in the article.) And now this. Looks like Russia decided it really loves sanctions and wants more of them.

Some better news: NATO plans to station more troops along the Russian border and generally in the East. Nothing is official right now, since the great NATO-summit is planned for July, but the plans for a battalion for each Eastern country is already mostly done. The USA will provide most of the troops for the additional battalion in Poland, the UK will take over the battalion in Estonia, Canada will take Latvia and Germany Lithuania. Oh, and there are talks to put another formation into Romania, just to be sure. This stationing of troops will be an inofficial rotation and not a real stationing. In answer to this, Putin has ordered the Russian Army to check their operational readiness. According to Putin, this is just a coincidence, it's not really meant as a direct answer to the non-stationing of NATO-troops along the Russian border. Looks like things are heating up again!

On 14th October it was revealed Germany is planning a fleet expansion, mostly as a reaction to what Russia is doing. Some emergency money gets used to double our corvette-fleet from 5 to 10 ships over the next few years. There's also a massive increase in the budget promised to pay for the shipbuilding program, but that's been postponed to after the next election for obvious reasons. Something the article doesn't mention: For some years we have been building a new class of combat frigates large enough to classify as cruisers (~7200 GRTs), the first ships will start getting commissioned around the time the new corvettes will arrive. The Bundesmarine has been incredibly stretched and stressed out for some time thanks to our governments giving out more and more commitments but not more money. Looks like Russia's new aggressiveness accidentally saved our fleet from slowly collapsing, thanks for the new ships, Putin!

aphid_licker posted:It has no VLS to the AB's 90 cells and no torpedos, ie no way of actually doing anything. It carries a bare-minimum self-defense-armament in form of the SAM launcher, a battery of essentially useless subsonic anti-shipping-missiles, and a naval gun. It would've been a decent combat ship at half the weight and 30 years ago, and coincidentally the F122 carry the exact same armament - gun, 2x self-defense-SAM, 8x Harpoon, at indeed half the weight and 30 years older. The thing just barely qualifies as a warship. It's meant for stabilization missions, optimized for endurance and carrying special forces, nothing to do with the Russians. As far as the Russians are concerned the German navy got less dangerous. The discussion moved a bit off-topic, I mentioned the new corvettes first with a reason. That reason being they're explicitly meant for use in the Ostsee. They also carry the heavy anti-ship missiles of the type RBS15, so that's five more ships capable of sinking Russian ships. Coincidentally, the outdated Harpoons on the F125 are supposed to be replaced by those newer missiles, too. So that complaint is baseless. Also as far as I understand the technical data of the F125-class, they do have an AEGIS-equivalent fire control system, it's just not called "AEGIS". (I could be wrong though, I had to look up what an AEGIS is on Wikipedia) The F125 also carries 4 MASS-systems for defense, which seems to be superior to the Burke's equivalent. I'm highly sceptical the Burke could actually not get hit immediately by an anti-ship missile and sink without actually doing anything. The naval gun is actually a fairly modern system, capable of using special ammunition for supporting land-based operations. 100km max range with specialized ammunition isn't bad for a dinky little gun. You also forgot the two remote-controlled 27mm autocannons. But yeah, together with the 5 robot-machine guns the class has it's more meant for peacekeeping missions. I mean those robot-guns are obviously meant to repel boarders, which is I guess more important to a peacekeeping mission on the other side of the world than to fight other ships?

Veterans with a soviet or russian history are treated as 2nd class, as not "real" veterans because they served with the enemy, the evil russian oppressors. The government likes to say it's prioritizing current wounded war heroes, and obviously people wounded in active combat get priority, this isn't something anyone disagrees with. The problem is that Anton, the son of some current well connected official who spent a year in the military as an accountant, gets priority over any "soviet veteran". This was exactly the sort of favouritism and discrimination my grandpa fought against and why I find it extremely sad that he's become a victim of it. Yeah that's kind of lovely, but hey when Russia finally reconquers Ukraine your grandpa will probably get the favouritism and Anton will probably get shot, so even though that's just more corruption, at least he will get his revenge if he survives a couple years/months longer. If he still thinks corruption is bad even after it saves his life, I'll have some respect for this unnamed Soviet ex-general. If he doesn't, will this make you even more sad? For the past several months she's been leading a campaign to ban the film Matilda that tells a story of then prince Nicholas dating a ballet dancer (an absolute historical fact). Because Nicholas II and his family are martyrs, it's somehow disrespectful to show what Nichols had been up to before his marriage, and the film should be banned according to the law protecting religious feelings. Thankfully, the court decided not to ban the movie (probably more due to the fact that it was filmed with state money), but the original claim included gems like 'the Czar is portrayed negatively in the film, because he dates a ballet dancer who wasn't very beautiful in real life'. Hah! It's not possible to portray Nicholas II negatively, that sad sack did only one thing right: Getting shot by the Communists.

Australia as a nation only exists because GB got too tired of hanging all those evil bread-stealers and poor people, and instead decided to ship them all to the other end of the world. And taking care of hundreds of hives is a lot of work, so you'll need specialized tools to make it faster and easier on your back. Especially once you take into account that to make your hives really productive, you'll have to move them to where the flowers are, so that they can start sooner and finish later. That's where you get specialized forklifts and trucks, mechanical extractors, and so on. Bee thieves can also be a problem, if rare. Last year some local bee keeper in Germany lost like 50k Euros worth of bees. Someone just walked into his forest and absconded some of his hives.
