Are you forgetting just how frequently wars were happening in europe even before the two world wars?

I'm not saying EU is all-great, it has plenty of problems - but they're ones that can be solved without sending young people to their deaths.

They say you get to know your friends in times of crises, and we sure have one across the pond. Currently, president Trump is trying to lure CureVac, a German based medical company, to move their headquarters to the US. The deal? For the right price Trump would have a license to the corona virus vaccine, "but only for the United States", to quote an unknown newspaper source. Such a country exclusive license is vehemently opposed by the German government, which is currently participating in a bidding war with the orange man. They're of course not the only horse in the race for a vaccine, but to have a nation try to woo a company to move in and keep the resulting vaccine is morally dubious, to say the least.

But I guess :capitalism:
Sure, but that happened on March 2nd and on March 11th the company founder and chairman of the board let the now-previous CEO go and stepped back to role of the CEO.
Also, the company wasn't looking to move to human trials until some time in June or July, so in addition to hopefully not going through and making Trump look like even more of a despicable excuse for a human being than he already is, it also makes him look absolutely desperate as if he's clutching at straws. :allears:

You could have just said, "die you filthy non-urban". When infrastructures such as a hospital is closed, it's not the locals who get away from things, it's the things that get away from them.
Did you just knee-jerk react to a legitimate question? Because that's exactly why I live in a remote area - ie. I live an hour and 15 minutes from the nearest hospital, and the hospital where my cancer is treated is 2-3 hours away.
I'm also immune-compromised, and as a result have voluntarily self-isolated since the 9th of March.

Non-urban people are much less likely to catch the disease; there's only been 9 new cases in my entire region, whereas the region where the capital is in has seen by far the biggest change in new cases, meaning the correlation coefficient by which infectious diseases are estimated (and which forms the red vs green curves you see) looks a lot different.

I think this is making some assumptions. Sure, if there's a strong state response that effectively quarantines the infected within certain cities and regions, then yeah, it is much safer outside those regions. Maybe, but I can't really speak on behalf of how things are in China, since I'm Danish.

PederP posted:

Same argument is being used in Denmark. "Mask use will create a false sense of comfort". Other classics are: "Improper mask use is worse than no mask use" and "Non-medical grade masks are useless and/or harmful".

I still think the passively dismissive attitude to mask use in Scandinavia (and maybe other similar countries) is primarily due to the fear of having to enforce mask mandates. If there are no consequences, lots of people will ignore the mandate. If that happens, or there is no actual mandate (but a recommendation), there will be an angry reaction from people who value human life and public health. So at some point, the government needs to pass a law with fines for not using masks when required.

That will create a backlash of negative publicity as traditional and social media flood with stories of people "unfairly" punished for not wearing masks, violence due to disagreements of over compliance, examples of police selectively enforcing the rules, etc.

Widespread public mask use turning out be an important aspect of handling this epidemic is a problem for the Danish government. The american mask-debate is a bit of a help here, as many see the resistance to masks in the US as a hint it might be a good idea after all. But even then, tons of people will just downright refuse to comply - and civil disobedience on such a scale will weaken the government regardless of what they do. Danes consider social convention more important than law - and low-intensity civil disobedience is the norm in many aspects of life.

This is why I think politicians and health authorities are just staying quiet and hoping voluntary mask use is going to be enough - and downplaying the benefits of mask use, so people don't actually start demanding mandatory use.
How ironic is it that if we were to protest mask wearing, we'd be breaking the law since you're not allowed to cover your face when protesting in Denmark?

Makes me wonder what part of our history has been rewritten in such a way - because I don't for a second believe it can't have happened here.
