The scene in Biollante where the kids hold up their drawings is one of the best moments in any Godzilla film, some real "the power of cinema" poo poo

Godzilla vs Megalon, no poo poo, I love it when Jet Jaguar's getting his rear end beat and Godzilla calls out and we cut to the man himself marching across the barren waste to the rescue and that loving goofy rear end spaghetti western music swells up

Lmao Devlin and Emmerich also claimed that the Japanese filmmakers were just too stupid to figure out stop motion animation like Willis O'Brien which is why they "had" to use a man in a suit for the original Godzilla. Racist morons.

My copy's beat to hell but I'd never part with it anyways, it opened my world up to the 90s films and Godzilla fandom. Looking back now it's pretty shallow, Toho-sanctioned product and obviously not as deep or interesting as Ryfle or Kalat, for example, but I still love it.

Arc Hammer posted:I would love to see a MonsterVerse take on Mothra vs Battra. Zhang Ziyi can play the twins again as they watch over the Mothra eggs and then help the good Mothra caterpillar grow up to stop the evil one that Charles Dance wants to use to create a doomsday butterfly swarm. Poor Battra didn't get much to do much his first time around. I think Mothra pretty much already has that dark side that he's supposed to embody, where she'll smash thru a city to make things right, and we have to take a hard look at ourselves to see if we're safe from her bad side. I love it when the twins threaten humans with blithe matter of factness - "oh yes, if you do not return the egg, Mothra is sure to destroy everything!"

Return of Ultraman is a favorite of mine, a great 1st episode that goes into a cool mini-arc, they really blow out the first few episodes with monsters and city smashing. Spoilers for how Hideki Go becomes Ultraman: He's a racecar driver/daredevil who runs up like 10 flights of stairs to save a kid during a monster attack, helps the kid release all his pet pigeons from the roof before running away, and then also rescues a tied up dog before the monsters bury him in rubble. He covers the kid and dog with his body, saving them at the expense of his life, so this series' Ultraman revives him for his bravery!

I dunno, guess we'll see when they do some Showa flicks I saw Hedorah, Gigan, and Mechagodzilla 74 the day and they were all subbed. They all started with Criterion Janus logo at the beginning so I figure any of the films from the Criterion showa box are going to be on here subbed.

Spacebump posted:Outside of OG Godzilla, Shin, and -1, what are the other good Japanese Godzilla movies? Godzilla vs Biollante is my all time fave, sort of pre-shin vibes with the bureaucratization of Godzilla plus some very anime elements like ESP and cloning. I actually find the rest of the '90s Heisei series kind of shite, honestly, vs King Ghidorah is fun but the rest 1992-1995 are pretty mediocre. It's incredible how the '90s Gamera trilogy just wipes the floor with them with like 1/3 the budgets. Spacegodzilla is impressive for being especially lovely, if you want to see how bad the series can get. As for the classic Showa run 1954-1975, you honestly can't go wrong imo, but I really like Ghidrah '64, Astro-Monster '65, Sea Monster '66, and Terror of Mechagodzilla '75.

hallo spacedog posted:Agreed! It was definitely in the zeitgeist. Gamera vs Zigra makes some bland feints in the same direction but of course there's nothing in that movie at all. Plus there's Spectremen who works as a Pollution G-Man in his day job, and the villain Dr. Gori is an environmentalist who wants to destroy humans to save the earth.

Maxwell Lord posted:I still like Spacegodzilla fine. For its flaws it still has a unique look and feel, and it's one of the few post-Biollante films to do something with Miki Saegusa. Good points, plus they totally waste Battra as a new character. Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II has the 2nd worst single fx sequence in the Heisei films imo, the whole scene of Godzilla in the countryside where it looks like he's on a minigolf course. The very worst is of course the Spacegodzilla asteroids. I will say that the long composite shot of Godzilla coming ashore at the beginning of Spacegodzilla is genuinely beautiful, with the waves washing on the beach as he approaches.

Maxwell Lord posted:Yeah just about every Heisei film has at least one sequence where they pushed the FX team a little too hard with too little time. I was watching them on the pluto channel the other day and I'd forgotten how there are some really nice little touches throughout. There's a really nice shot in Godzilla vs Mothra where Battra knocks a building over onto some fleeing extras, really playing with the foreground and background, and another in Mechagodzilla II when Godzilla's coming ashore and there are some burning ships behind him, showing his path of destruction which is leading to the people in the foreground. There's some other flatter composites where Godzilla is just pasted behind the skyline as people run and those shots feel so perfunctory in comparison.

I love Akiko Wakabayashi as the Princess/Prophetess in Ghidrah, esp. her ragamuffin getup in the fisherman's clothes. Her deadpan dub lines as the Prophetess are incredible too ... "Because he's already arrived!" The film's a bit messy but it's still one of my favorites, just barely over Astro Monster.

FuzzySlippers posted:I have a dumb question Godzilla thread. Are any of the other kaiju movies like Shin Godzilla's weird focus on meetings and bureaucracy? I don't recall anything like that in the old old movies, but I haven't seen any of them in decades. I've watched a couple of the US made ones that were nothing like it either. I did recently watch the original 50s movie which I enjoyed more than I expected, but also not really meetings porn either. the Heisei films have meetings and war rooms and bureaucracy but it's all played straight and not the main focus, except maybe in Biollante. That film is pretty interesting imo as the first film to really start showing how Japanese bureaucracy would react to a Godzilla threat. In earlier entries the military is sending tanks or superweapons or specific anti-Godzilla plans, but in Biollante you get a real feel for the huge bureaucracy at work and how the characters are just tiny actors in this sprawling system. It gets more perfunctory in the following Heisei films.
