He did that really neat RPG where you play as magic items and poo poo. I didn't get in on that but it seemed to be a perfectly well handled KS as well with the people I know who got it having nothing but good things to say.

I wanna say he did another thing too but I can't quite remember.

It's called Wield. It doesn't really do what it promises though. The whole game is supposed to be about how magic items and their mortal wielders vie for dominance but there aren't mechanics to cover those conflicts. There's also no character sheet PDF out there as a free download. You could handle that idea with a game like Monsters and Other Childish Things better.

Rolled a 1 on the random encounter table, didn't you?

Flavivirus posted:

A question for the Kickstarter connoisseurs here: I'm making a card-based RPG and plan on kickstarting it soon (game's page is here). With the actual production of the card decks, I have two main options:

1) Bulk-print the decks complete with full-colour tuckbox, get them shipped to me, then ship them to backers for a total cost to backers of ~£11 + pledge cost.
2) Give backers coupon codes to get the deck printed at-cost, put in clear plastic deckboxes and shipped to them for £6 + shipping (ranging between £4.8 for US to £13.8 for Australia) - total cost to the backer of £11-£20 + pledge cost.

Number 1 has the benefit of better value for backers and gives me a stock of decks to sell through my website and at conventions, but come with a higher risk of international shipping (via Royal Mail) screwing things up for me and giving me lots of work posting parcels. Number 2 puts all the fulfillment work in the hands of professional card printers and shippers and means I don't need to worry about a minimum deck print run, but at a greater cost to backers and with a less well-presented product at the end.

Any advice?

This is a tough question to answer but it depends on what level of risk you are willing to take and what kind of support you think you will get. Option 1 is riskier to you because it requires investment and more effort but ideally you should print enough copies that have enough leftover to sell via distribution after the Kickstarter. Option 2 is safer, but less attractive to backers and other customers. So you should answer these questions to decide:

1. How much risk are you willing to invest in this project, in terms of time and money?

2. Are you comfortable with storing boxes of unsold cards either at your home or paying a warehouse to do it?

3. Do you really want to package and mail dozens or hundreds of boxes to backers? If not, would you consider paying a fulfillment house extra to do it for you?

4. Do you want to make this an ongoing business or is this a one off product? If it is a business, how long would it take you to make another product?

5. How much do you think your kickstarter will raise?

6. Did you budget any of the KS money for your own work?

This looks interesting: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mvmedia/ki-khanga-a-sword-and-soul-role-playing-game

quote:

Ki Khanga is a new Sword and Soul (African-inspired epic and heroic fantasy) roleplaying game that uses regular playing cards to resolve conflicts and to achieve feats in a fun and dynamic way that keeps the action and drama moving.

Ki Khanga: The Sword and Soul RPG contains all the tools and guidance players need to don the roles of sword, spear and bow-wielding warriors; powerful Babalawo and Nana priests, who control the forces of nature; nangas, who cast powerful magic through their nkisi statues; and countless other occupations, all creatable through our free form character creation system.

Taking many inspirations from oral history and literature, Ki Khanga gives players a unique experience, immersing them in a world of African folklore and culture. Add in some Sword and Sorcery excursions into the forests, desert, plains, rivers, seas and sprawling metropolises, along with ancient temples and powerful gods and demigods and you have Ki Khanga – classic tabletop roleplaying, with a fresh configuration of friends, fiends, foes and formidable dangers.

Upwind is powered by the Q system, an original stakes-based, playing card-driven mechanic that gives every encounter consequences with meaningful, narrative-building outcomes. With its unique bidding rules, Upwind plays as fast as you can tell your story.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/drunkandugly/gobblin-the-goblin-rpg

quote:

Gobblin’ is an original RPG setting and system where players control goblins settling and exploring a post-apocalyptic Earth. The creatures who crave violence, stupidity and chaos have just found the perfect means to obtain it.

Everyone knows about goblins. They’re violent and stupid little green guys who with just enough brain cells to know what they’re doing and black enough hearts not to care. They live in fantastic worlds where wizards battle dragons, kingdoms rise and fall, and armies of swordsmen clash to save the world from evil. All the while, there’s always goblins looting corpses and stealing cabbages.

When the higher races grew tired of the chaotic creatures so obnoxious that even the forces of evil didn’t want them around, they banded together to form a spell so powerful that it would reach across the entire realm. With what was essentially a magical, interdimensional eviction notice, every single goblin was hurled through time and space until they landed in what they would come to know as their new home. There were no humans or elves there, but those that had lived there before had left behind a strange world ravaged by war. The least cowardly of the goblins started to prod at the mysterious devices until they roared to life and the goblins cheered to realize their fate!

This world had guns and cars, bazookas and robots! Things that exploded if you poked them enough! Exciting mutants and bombed out apartments that were MUCH cozier than any goblin hut. The goblins had a whole world of abandoned toys to discover, many of which could kill their fellow goblin from twenty paces away. The goblins ran wholeheartedly into their new world, wanting to be the first to discover the strangest mysteries, deadliest weapons and tastiest expired snack cakes of the world they would call Goblin House. The humans were gone from this place. The goblins would thrive in their ruins.

Full Disclosure: I know the people who are making this game. They are fellow RPG podcasters and they do good work. Some of the RPPR cast tried this out at Gen Con this year and had a blast. I plan to record a game of it soon and post it on the podcast as well.

quote:

Tokusatsu is the Japanese word for any live action movie or television show that makes heavy use of special effects. The word's literal translation is "Special Filming."

Giant, lizard-like kaiju that breathe atomic energy, quirky teens that transform into superheroes to fight against aliens from the moon, and giant robots going blow for blow with one another are all fundamental works within the genre of tokusatsu.

The people behind this Kickstarter worked on aspects of Red Markets and/or are involved in RPG podcasts like Role Playing Public Radio. It's going to be a print on demand book through DrivethruRPG so it should be easy for them to get this out to backers without complication.

quote:

Party Fowl: The Game of Drunk Ducks is a card-based, light strategy game with area control mechanics on a modular board. Players win by playing cards that dominate specific topics of conversation, sabotage other players, and transform their characters into party legends and the coolest ducks on campus.

You play as students attending Duck University. It’s the week before finals, and you're fitting to get fowl! You’ll need to party carefully though; the social pecking order at Duck U is a real cluster-duck.
