Instant Sunrise posted:Paramount won that fight so Gene and the rest of the writers went back and padded out the script by adding in the whole Q subplot. That really shows when you realize that they spend a good 5-10 minutes letting the audience watch Riker watch part I on the space TV to get caught up. Didn't Picard also make him manually dock the saucer section or something in order to show he was cool, putting a thousand men, women, and children in peril for a last minute second job interview?

It's hard to take you seriously when you won't even fix your spellcheck back to Romulan.

So lazy. Well if you want another "in-universe" reason, Starfleet isn't a "military", and even in the modern military there are often options about how and which uniform to wear that are at the discretion of the individual outside of specific duties or formations/parades, beyond just stuff getting phased out. When I was an air force media guy I could wear the camouflage pajamas or the blue polyester suit pretty much at my discretion most of the time.

I went in with poo poo-level expectations from Into Darkness, and Beyond hurdled right over them and then some. (1) Not afraid to have a little fun and struck just the right tone between gravitas and whimsy. It was fun without being too cotton candy about it. (2) Will probably upset the ~but my canon~ people: but we get some awesome space superstructure porn that will likely be the closest we get to a Culture Orbital on the big screen. Was really cool. (3) Maybe I'm biased having grown up with the old dudes, but it still feels like the actors are doing impersonations of performances... but they are doing them better and the chemistry is nice. (4) A few nods to neckbeard canon (from the Enterprise series, of all things) that strike the right balance between being satisfying name drops for ubernerds, but functioning fine as offhanded and unobtrusive references for the uninitiated. E: also it mostly did its own thing and told a newish story. Definitely the best of the NuTreks, and handily better than most of the TNG Trek and the bad TOS Trek films. As I said, on the balance, I liked the new film. But I do have one big bugbear with it: They kind of hide it by putting it as a last act reveal, but the bad guy here is another Khan, basically. Thematically, I mean. Marooned by his compatriots in the Federation, and wants bloody revenge. It's probably the weakest part of the film and doesn't really hold up to scrutiny, and it's a testament to how well they did the visual storytelling, characterization, and chemistry that I give it a pass. I want to see Star Trek get out of the Revenge rut it's been stuck in for the past four films. Look at the motivations of the villains/foils throughout the series: (1) Returning to its "parents," reunification with its makers (2) Revenge (3) Nationalism (4) Communication (5) Finding God (6) Nationalism/Militarism/Thwarting Detente (7) Finding Nirvana (8) Assimilation (9) Eternal Youth (10) Revenge (11) Revenge (12) Revenge (13) Revenge

In the end of Star Trek 13, did they ever address why they didn't just beam Krull and his doomsday device out of the orbital and into space, or otherwise use transporters to solve the easilly transporter-solvable problem instead of having Kirk punch the bad guy with punching? I mean it's okay to have a action chase but do they at least throw out a line about how they can't get a tranporter lock because of the plobtonium particle interference or w/e?

Rewatching Beyond two more things I like about Jaylah: She doesn't have a dumb tacked-on romance plot with Kirk or Scotty. The villains henchman who she fights isn't a woman just so she'll have another woman to fight. I feel like as little as ten years ago they would have done this tiresome poo poo.

I work for a group that represents folks who use hearing aids, cochlear implants, and other assistive devices, and Geordi presents a kind of visibility (no pun intended) that you don't see anywhere else. It's interesting that there's some subset of the deaf community who is really cruel to cochlear implant users calling them "robots" and poo poo because it is perceived as an assault on deaf culture.

Pikestaff posted:Honestly, the best Trek movie on Netflix is Galaxy Quest. I maintain that the best way to approach a sequel would be with a "Next Generation/reboot" version in the offing, and riffing on the tension between casts. Tim Allen being threatened by a sexy young replacement in the captain's chair (or a veteran Shakespearean Real Actor making him feel self-conscious about his ham) and poo poo. Of course, by Grapthar's Hammer, one of the best parts of that cast can't reprise his role.

Hi thread. It's been several dozen pages. Does ST:D still look like it's going to be a total (space age maglev) trainwreck? Have they even cast it yet? Last I heard it was due to start airing sometime in the Spring and there was every indication they were just gonna slam some Red Bulls and shoot everything the night before? Also did the fanfilm coffee profiteers get they dicks slapped off in court yet? Thanks.
