The main thing that finally sunk in for me this last week or so is that Trump's supporters will be his supporters until the day they die and absolutely nothing can change that, but that that doesn't matter since neither are they numerous enough or in the right positions to win the election. They can be completely ignored and cut out of the equation entirely. The only question is whether his antics will earn him any new supporters and the answer is no. I didn't fully anticipate how badly Khan speaking at the DNC would screw Trump but I should have. It's been nonstop own-goals since then. Also who decided that "gold star parents" was a thing to call people like him? Has that term been in use a lot longer than the "you get a gold star lol" sarcastic meaning I grew up with?

If they somehow manage to pull out another Trump after that, that's when we'll likely actually see some big shifts in the party's platform.

I don't think there's a "leader" in the GOP with the stones at this point. The only kind of thing like that I would accept and think they were an ok would be "At first I thought he was just a temporary aberration but now I came to realize that he is the true face of the GOP and I'm out". But nooooo, so far all the letters and stuff have been "My party is a force for good in the world and Donald is wrecking it for no reason!"

Are there any multilingual people in this thread who would be willing to track down a translation of one of Trump's trademark run-on sentences (ex: that one about nuclear power from earlier) and point out any notable ways (if any) in which the content/context of the translation varies from the English version? Here's a short Yomiuri article about the Russia hacking Clinton line.

Sometimes traditional industries just need to be crushed and obliterated and the tobacco business is one of them. Once they are dead and buried maybe people can grow tobacco in their backyards for personal use if they really want to.

Still though, things seem like they have been relatively quiet on the Trump front over the last few days. Is he still speaking in public every day and just not saying any new crazy things? I mean, if he doesn't keep up the crazy, the media will turn to Hillary for basically the first time in the general election.
