I had a few moments over the weekend that had me doing some soul searching, and this/these thread/s share some of the blame for awakening an anger in my I was unaware existed so here is my little story. I was at a baseball game with my wife and aunt and uncle. Really good seats, first base side - in one of those sections where you have a wait staff and everything. They were in town visiting and had two extra tickets. It was between innings and one of the coaches was tossing used balls to kids in the stands - we were that close. A woman, somewhere between 55-60 and sitting a few rows in front of us, stepped in front of a little kid to get a baseball that one of the coaches threw - there was enough physical contact that I would have been in the lady's face if it were my kid. This kid couldn't have been older than 8 and was just crushed - didn't cry or anything, but he was wearing it all over his face. She tossed the ball up and down a few times in her seat, bragging to her husband, not acknowledging the kid whatsoever, as several of us around her were yelling to give the ball to the kid. Almost reflexively I screamed at the lady, "HASN'T YOUR GENERATION STOLEN ENOUGH FROM HIM!?!?" Some dude in front of me just said 'drat' and I couldn't believe I was so upset. Later that night we went back to my aunt and uncle's hotel room. I had been nervous in the days leading up to them coming into town that the election was going to come up. They're really nice people and I've always had a lot of love and respect for them - very giving, fun-loving, working-class from the mid-west. Both of them in the course of an hour insulted Muslims, black people, panhandlers/homeless people, gays, and intimated that they had done a lot of research before travelling because they wanted to be safe in the big scary urban city. I couldn't bring myself to react or respond to the dog whistling, and everyone was somewhere between tipsy and drunk anyhow, so we said our goodbyes and made some thin plans for brunch the next day that didn't come to fruition. Really was awful. I've made concessions my entire life for family that were, in many ways, bad people. I am, in many ways, a bad person. But I'm not sure I can reconcile love for family with being an out of touch idiot supporting policies and behaviors that directly make other people's lives horrible. And these two were just two in a list of People With Really lovely Beliefs That Will Not Listen To You, that are or at one time were very close to me - including my mother and father. Anyways I just spent $60 on Hillary's webstore.
