There was no real base to my complaint there, so don't take it too seriously. I was just being salty for losing a Nemelex choice that late to a monster that specifically targets my species and that I've never seen actually appear in Depths before (as Internet Kraken pointed out, though, it was probably only appearing due to a rare vault anyway). I probably would have been just as salty to Mennas camping a set of stairs, to be honest. I was actually in Depths to get more experience to get Tornado online because I had enough defenses and the lightning spire and ice beasts were actually enough to chip away at hordes while I tanked it all. I do feel that the breath being both a heavy impact and AOE effect is a little harsh if they have a chance of appearing in 3 rune games for undead species.

Some tricks: -A lot of Shoals enemies are weaker inland vs near the water, so drag them over to even footing -Don't be afraid to use consumables/god powers when you see something that you don't know if you can deal, like water nymphs or merfolk avatars -Leave Shoals:4 for later as long as possible, always. It is so much more dangerous than any other Lair branch ending by a mile -Always let enemies come to you, don't reveal more spaces moving to them (good advice for the rest of the game as well)

Before I could react he chain lightning'd me for about 80 hp and then chain lightning'd me again for the remaining 50 before I could go back up, killing me. That's specifically Nikola; most other elec using enemies are high damage but pretty predictable in how much they can do in a turn. Never fight him without rElec or a potion of resistance. If you don't have either, you can risk it with summon butterflies/loads of summons or undead to try to mitigate the chain lightning bounces until you kill him (but you should only do this if he's blocking the only way you can go and you have no alternative routes left).

Shinino Kage posted:Yes, but if you're playing a race/class combo that is horrible with a certain weapon-type, it's horrible to not have at least basic weaponry scale up. Again, I'm not talking "Oh, I should have a super-arte great sword on D1 every game". I think you can find most mid tier weapons if you go to Orc, which is around Lair. Orc warriors, knights, and warlords have a lot of common mid tier weapon variety.

Shinino Kage posted:Orc is generally after Lair, tho, going by the 'order' thing in IRC of D1-10, Lair, D11-12, Orc, D13-14, S et al. The 'order' is a good guide, but it is created for standard luck under the assumption that the number one priority for you at that moment is to gain as much experience for as little risk as possible. It's important to recognize when to deviate from it due to something else taking priority. For example, if you're in Lair and still using a hand axe, maybe take a quick stop at Orc and burn some god powers/evocable/consumables to scrape up something better. Also, answering your suggestion earlier about starting weapon quality, the only backgrounds with improved starting weapons are Fi and Gl. This is because the other parts of their kit (shield/scale mail, throwing nets) are nowhere near good enough to make up for only having melee as an option, since Fi will usually ditch their shield for a two-handed and Gl can't just throw nets whenever due to the mulch rate. Without those upgraded weapons, there would be no reason to pick either over a Mo/Zealot/hybrid book backgrounds. Giving everyone these upgraded weapons would necessitate giving Fi/Gl an even higher tier, leading to a power creep. Floodkiller fucked around with this message at 22:14 on Dec 1, 2016 |

Maybe it can change and everyone can become consistent then! PleasingFungus posted:m&f weapons are much better for 'pure melee' characters, especially those not following gifting gods, since the great mace is by far the most common top-end melee weapon. Great maces are also severely underwhelming. I find Polearms offer a smoother upgrade transition than M&F thanks to the large amount of enemies that use them (bardiches are often the one "Don't Count On It" tier weapon that I can actually count on finding without a gifting god, at least by Vaults), along with reaching being very useful. Battleaxes are also dirt common and pretty comparable to great maces if you have a god who can help you take advantage of cleaving.

Any advice for gods that help early on but have pretty survivable punishments? I've heard Fedhas is good for this sort of thing, but I don't have good experience with it because I don't use Fedhas if I can help it. I would advise you to have a good plan to survive to Slime:5 if you are dead set on Jiyva, because that may be the sole altar that game. Alternatively, if you don't care about winrate or start scumming, keep trying faded altars until you get a Jiyva start (or find an early Jiyva altar/Slime temple).

My only Orc Jesus win was to just be buff enough to beat everything by myself and let my orcs spawn and die around me. Whenever I needed to escape, I used them as meatshields to buy me time to tele or climb the stairs. When some of them got lucky to get names, I gave them my bad randarts (and eventually, Firestarter). I tried recalling on the entrance while escaping with the Orb, but nobody came.
